Just about all Mercedes-Benz have a feature on the hood were you can push the hood up vertically and press these metallic tabs that allow you to lock the hood in vertically positioned. The tabs are located by the Hood Hinges. Thay will keep you from using vice grips on the struts.

I had a 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor sport sedan with a rare 6-speed manual transmission. I bought it used in 2007 with 24k miles on it. I sold with 205k miles on it. It never left me stranded, never broke down & a really fun car to drive. I will say that when it approached 175k miles, it started to get heavy with the maintenance. I always kept the car well maintained & always used OEM parts. I currently have a 2013 E350 4matic sport sedan I bought in 2015 with 30k miles. My wife had a 1999 CLK 450 v8 Incredible car. It did need a new transmission at 198,000 miles and I didn’t take it to Mercedes for that. I took it to a specialist for transmissions saved $3000. It’s still running after we gave it to a friend of ours for $1000, it’s got over 300,000 miles on it and he’s just had to do regular maintenance. He’s had to do break jobs things like that but it’s a high-performance car never had to touch any exhaust system. Only thing I did on the engine was replace valve cover gasket . I agree Mercedes made in Germany are much better. I have an E350 Formatic It’s a 2012 and we have 200,000 miles on it and we’ve only had to do regular maintenance except for gasket. I think that was on the timing chain cover. If you care for a good holder, Mercedes, you can get half 1,000,000 miles at least our E350 looks brand new inside and out my experience has been that people buy Mercedes and abuse them don’t take care of them and when something breaks, they blame it on Mercedes even though they haven’t done proper maintenance

I bought an 04 clk500 with 50k miles for $10k. Meticulously maintained, beautiful car. Only inherent issues with the engines are the crankshaft position sensor can get hot and fail, let it cool off and it fires back up. Problem is when people replace them, they use cheap Chinese sensors instead of Bosch. Other inherent issue is the valve cover gaskets. Same thing tho where people cheap out and the problem comes back. It also uses a complex can-bus network, it requires perfect voltage from the battery or else everything gets mad, it also gets mad when you don’t use oem quality parts. These cars were outfitted with Bosch electronic systems from factory, including Bosch abs which actually works really well.
Last cool fact is the drag coefficient is almost as good as a Prius, I drive mostly on the highway and average 20.4 mpg with the 5.0L v8

I bought an ‘06 SL500 with just 48,000 miles on it. Drove it 3 years with zero issues. Then I took it to a side shop after the local Mercedes dealership bilked me for $659 for a Schedule B servicing. They had good reviews and a Mercedes specialist. I was there for an oil change, that was it. Well, long story short…a year and a half later I’m into them for $17,000 in repairs sinse the first visit. It was literally one thing after another. One time after picking it up, just three days passed when something else went out. I’ve presently been driving a loaner for six weeks straight because they can’t find a mersedes original part. They’ve replace the after market part twice now as they both failed around the 20 day mark after they were installed. It’s warranty work but still. I paid $17,000 for the car. It books for around $24,000. I’ve put $17,000 in repairs in it in a 16 month period. $34,000 in a car worth $24,000 book and I’d be lucky to get $14,000 out of it right now…though it’s basically a new car with just 70,300 miles on it currently. Love driving it! But it’s drained my savings. Wouldn’t recommend purchasing one, especially after watching this…it seems to be typical of the make.

@@dondgc2298Hardtop is fine, no issues. The shocks is why it’s in the shop right now. Struts I should say. Hydraulic. The original pump failed months ago and the first and second after market pumps have both failed around the 20 day mark on each. That work is under warranty, but they’ve had the car for over a month now trying to find an original Mercedes pump. They won’t put another after market in it. Just won’t hold up. The car only has 70,230 miles on it. You name it, it’s been replaced less the top. Knock on wood! Fun to drive, but a nightmare in repairs. German engineering is grossly over rated. The motor and transmission might be strong but the rest of the car is literally junk. If I have to take a trip over 400 miles I rent a car. Can’t trust I’ll get there and back in the SL.

It is a Toy/Project car. You need to go into buying one of these with that mindset. Scotty, You might be interested in this. I just bought a used Toyota Rav EV it has a Toyota body (which is so well built from the paint job to the interior) it is really good for what we need. I paid $11,000 for it. It is fast when you want it to be and my wife and I are totally happy with it. We don't do long trips and we charge it on 120v every night the range is about 82 miles on a charge, now, which is fine. The battery is about 80% but the build quality of everything is so so good. They only made about 2600 of these. And Toyota was involved with Tesla in the early stage. It has 52,000 miles on it now. Maybe if you get time you can tell me how this came to be. It is a very cool car. Thanks for all your information that keeps all of us educated to cars and trucks. Kem

I owned a used 1999 CLK320 convertible for 15 years. Drove fantastic. Spent about $5k over the lifetime for both maintenance and repair. I sold it and bought a used 2016 MB350 sedan. Outstanding car. Easy to maintain. I compare it to my Toyotas and MB are just a little more expensive for maintenance and repair, but not much. My Honda Pilot and Acura, however can break the bank. Sold the Acura and kept the Honda. I’m doing all maintenance on the Honda myself. Runs about $700 to $800 every 30k miles, or twice the MB cost. Luckily I’ve managed to not have the Honda blown engine problem due to frequent oil changes with synthetic oil, I guess. Oil changes for the Toyotas and MB can go over 10k miles with no problem. The Honda oil is done at 7.5K miles and transmission fluid and differential at 30k miles, otherwise they break. The transmission fluids and parts must be OEM only and the dealer would charge about $1k for their service.

You're Only see the Mercedes that had problems, Not the thousands that are driving fine! I worked at a service shop and saw TONS of Mercedes come in for oil changes that had High mileage, and were totally fine.

Depends on what era mercedes. Brand new ones are horrible, these older ones in this video arent bad at all mechanically, as long as you stay away from the air suspension.
