  • WOW, There is so many features of this radio, I will have to make several other videos to explain them all. This is the Icom ID-5100A dual band D-Star radio, and in this video I show you around the radio, a well as demonstrate some Dstar functionality through the app via bluetooth, like sending and receiving pictures, text messaging, gateway calls and more. Look for other videos about this rig very soon.

    Every time I look at a video of a mobile VHF/UHF rig I think "Welcome to 1990". At least the Icom has nearby repeater search built-in. For the life of me, I don't understand why all radios with a GPS don't have this feature.

    I've been out of the Ham Radio biz for many years but with retirement coming up I'd like to get back in to it. This D-Start stuff sounds like something I'd REALLY like to get in to. I do IT support for a living and this combines my computer nerd behavior with my love of Ham Radio. Thanks for producing these videos. They are very informative. BTW - My Wife and I LOVE Vero Beach. another nice video! but,...
    1)you don't need a programming cable for this radio, all the programming can be done with the SD card using the (FREE) Icom software. not sure about that using RT Systems.
    2)when you update the firmware you get 1500 DR memories
    3)the radio has two speaker jacks. one for left band one for the right, making it a lot easier to listen to both VFOs at once. you can also set the radio to mute the sub band when its receiving on the main. You can also set the radio to have one band coming out on the ext speaker while the other comes out of the internal speaker.
    NEAT TRICK---- Put the radio into DR mode. then hit the scan button. it will give you the option to pick: DR only, FM only or both. choose one. the radio will scan the local repeaters CONTINUOUSLY letting you travel far from home without reprogramming the radio. I figured this out last year coming home from Dayton. I was able to monitor all the local repeaters en route (FM and DSTAR) all the way from Dayton 800 miles home in Illinois. In order to do this you'll have to load up your 1500 DR memories for the area your in. And you can store multiple files on the SD card so when the radio runs out of memories all you got to is pull over and load a new file.

      I removed the clip showing both speaker jacks to save time.. Also I noticed you can crossband Dstar to FM but I removed that because I felt it would cause issues with people trying it..

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, to use DRATS you need this cable, which is a video coming up.

    • @ewerth1968
      @ewerth1968 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I didn't mean to offend. Makes sense that you would need a cable for DRATS, never tried that. Just thought your viewers might like to know that you don't need a cable and RT software to program it. Does the RT software allow you to program it via SD card? I use RT for my 7100 it would make it easier to keep'em in sync.
      Are you going to do a video on cross banding DSTAR to FM? I might have to try that.
      Did you try the DR repeater scan? Its an awesome feature. Comes in handy while driving around away from home.

      @@ewerth1968 This is a paradigm difference for some hams. I buy RT Software for anything VHF/UHF that I buy and they offer the software. I understand the SD card will do that job just fine, but I like a cable. It's just a preference thing. The software, while not free, is amazingly smart and laid out much better than the Icom OEM software with better capabilities, just like an Excel spreadsheet. I've got a friend of mine who literally was offended when I told him I bought RTS for the 5100a. It's okay. It's a preference.

    I found it helpful while transmitting photos to make occasional voice announcements about what your doing especial if using higher quality photos. You can key up and transmit voice describing what the photo is about and requesting others standby until the data transmission is complete! So yes you can transmit data and voice simultaneously. So occasionally key up your microphone and ID during the transmission so others don't key up over your data.

    The reason it doesn't work on Apple iPhone is not due to serial port support over Bluetooth. The reason it doesn't work is because iPhones use newer low voltage Bluetooth. The Icom BT adapter doesn't support the low voltage protocol for Bluetooth. So it is Icoms choice not due to Apple's fault as you say in your video.
    Icom's BT module for the 4100A does support the low voltage version of Bluetooth and the app is available for iPhones for the 4100A. This proves that it was Icom's decision not to support Apple for the 5100 not Apples fault for not supporting serial port over Bluetooth.
    I do love your videos. Keep up the good work. I have the ID-4100A in my pickup and love it.

    I do not own the RT systems software for either the ID-51 nor the ID-5100 and I completely program them using the included iCom software using SD cards. The cables are not needed, and while the software is not the same as the RT System software once you get over the learning curve it's just as powerful. So save yourself a few bucks if you're willing to undergo a short learning curve.

    WOW, that looks so much easier than DMR, I got an DMR radio recently and after 2 weeks haven't finished programming the damn thing.
    With DMR you need to program in your repeater frequencies times the number of talk groups you want and then repeat and repeat over and over for every repeater you want to use and then again if you want to use a hot spot, it's a real pain in the ass but I suppose if you got a code plug for your area then it's not so bad but the problem I've seen with code plugs is they can have hundreds of TG you don't want and finding the ones you want can be a nightmare, I couldn't find a code plug for my area so had to do it myself, seriously it's horrible!
    In 2020 now, has D-Star improved more ? easier to use ?
    I heard the voice quality isn't as good as DMR.

      How about some D-Star demos ? I still don't quite get how it works, reflectors and all that. Fusion is simple, just press wires-X and you're in to whatever you want. DMR well, that's all fine once you spend weeks perfecting a code plug lol.

      I don't think it is your SD Card. If you got the repeater list directly from Icom's site, it doesn't load because it is the wrong file type. It is some error with the files on Icom's site. But if you go to Dstarinfo.com and download the repeater lists for DR mode radios, you will get a .csv file that will load into the radio from the SD Card.

      That app only works for the 4100A not the 5100. This is due to the lack of low voltage Bluetooth support in the 5100A BT module.

      Why would you order from Amazon, you should deal with amateur radio stores, the price is cheaper than amazon as well.

      Well, that was my first look, so to speak, it was the first look on the Google search page. I didn't say was ordering from them. Dang Man, I didn't mean to offend you❕
      I'm brand new to this Ham stuff the closest thing I've ever used is my 0l' Police radios and CB. which I know AIN't like HAM, I'm sure

      No no, no offend, and I was only asking, because I thought maybe you didn't know as a newcomer to the hobby. Check out stores like GigaParts.com, Ham Radio outlet, etc ... Buying from amateur radio stores you have better support from hams selling them.

      0k, I have found other channels like your's and Joe Lalumia's channels and others also. And, I'm learning More from ya'll. I bought the Midland MXT 400 radio and wanting to learn alittle bit How To Use this and then go into the HAM stuff later-on, I hope. Thanks for this Link to GigaParts.com too. I'm installing my antenna mount as we speak today.

      I always find it odd how so many people complain about the cost of Amateur Radios, like a feature rich ICOM D-STAR Radio for $539.95 but they will stand in line to pay $800-$1000 for an Apple iPhone the day the next version is released... Crazy but yes you can find lots of used radio's in very good if not new condition for less than half the cost of new because like iPhones some operators just want the next available radio model.

      It will if you remove 2 diodes inside the radio. But this is for experimental purposes only as it is not legal to use this radio on GMRS

    The major problem I have is that there are no D-STAR repeaters that I can hit from my apartment so I would need to figure out how to set something up so that if I want to I can be out and about and have a simplex node at home that I could use with an ht or another mobile D-STAR dose not allow that if I remember correctly and a hotspot would not give me the range that I need so what can I do in that case I know I could use Yaesu’s fusion to get on wiresX but can I do something with D-STAR in my situation the closest repeater for D-STAR is 150 miles away and I can’t hit that from my apartment

    • @HamRadioConcepts
      @HamRadioConcepts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A hotspot. Pick up a Jumbospot MMDVM Pi-star hotspot and you can use it with Dstar Fusion DMR and P25, at your house, or mobile, and talk all over the world.

    • @jav_eee
      @jav_eee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you make a video about setting the id-5100 up for jumbo spot use? Also, I left the screen protector on mine. One year later its still there ;)

    • @N9IBZED
      @N9IBZED 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s cool but is there away I can extendtherange of the hotspotto allow me to operate while I’moutand about without having it with me like leaving it connected to a radio at home and using an ht to get back to the radio at home and not having any extra stuff to carry

    • @jav_eee
      @jav_eee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      N9IBZED the simple way is to keep it with you and tie it to your phones hotspot. I imagine you could do what you want if you had a crossband capable radio near it.

      Try www.dstarinfo.com for the programming downloads. You choose the area of the country you are in and the percentage of D-Star to analog repeaters you want to load. You save it to the SD card and import it into the radio. If you travel a lot, you can download sets for different parts of the country, save them all on the SD card and import the one you want to use at the time based on your current location. The repeater information comes from The Repeater Book folks. You may have to check if you have a problem getting into certain repeaters. I have found one or two listings that were incorrect on things like the proper Tone to set. Like anything else we humans do, data is sometimes prone to error due to typos or just the wrong info being supplied to the folks who imported it to the list. Enjoy!

    • @glenstrecker55
      @glenstrecker55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheDisorderly1 well, you can’t have everything. D-Star can do more with data transfer capability than I have seen with DMR to date. With DMR, we hams are trying to utilize a mode that was made for Business purposes by forcing it into the Ham world. They are less expensive unless you go for the Motorola brand. They are a bear to program and most cannot be programmed from the radio without great difficulty. You need to do it from a computer. If you have D-Star and want to communicate with DMR users, it is possible. Check out information on the Quadnet Array or some of the experimental XRF reflectors that are cross linked to certain DMR Talk Groups. The hams are finding ways to bring us all together, with many complaining about how the manufacturers try to keep us separated. I find D-Star easier to use and very useful in certain applications, especially in Emcomm. With D-rats, we can bridge data to other D-Star station, to analog users or to the Internet. Fusion has the capability to transmit data and photographs too, but just between radios. I have not heard if they have developed software to link the computers to the radio, it may be done just via SD card swapping. What us old timers refer to as Sneaker Net where you run the recording media back and forth between the various devices. We did it with floppy discs years ago. Anyway, if you are just interested in talking, we have more or less solved the problem if we can decide where to meet up. The combinations are almost infinite as the choices are growing every day.

      @@mitchellwodach2215 I started playing with computers when you could only save programs to cassette tapes, then 5.25" single-sided floppy discs. I can fit more information on a thumb drive now than I could on the entire computer when they first came out. I go all the way back to the Trash-80 Model 1. I'm on an iMac now and am spoiled rotten with the Internet and LAN capabilities. And yes, I am officially an old fart now.
