You left out the part where you have to key up to link to the reflector. A very important piece of information.

I was able to link to a DV reflector but no one heard me. I think this video showed me a step I was missing... off now to try it. Thanks.

yeah man i just bought a icom 5100 if one person is talking on one side , and the second side both at the same time. I thought it was supposed to mute the sub and allow the main side to be heard, not both at the same time. I have only one speaker hooked up, do i need a second speaker ....one for each side , or is this a problem with my unit???

My local repeater is permanently connected to reflector 12 a. When I set my TO setting to local CQ, I can hear local traffic as well as traffic from the reflector. Are you saying that I will not be able to communicate with someone on 12A if I am transmitting using Local CQ? But I can hear them? So I would have to stay on "use reflector" to be able to respond to reflector AND local calls? What about if I was connected to my local repeater and used TO: as gateway to pop out in say Japan... Can the people permanently connected to my local repeater via 12A reflector hear the me and Japan talk going thru a gateway?

I've scrubbed through the ID-5100 user manual, read D-Star for dummies, and searched the Internet from front to back, and yet I still cannot find the answer to why, when I press DR, I get "No Repeater Is Found" for 1 second, and then return to F-1. I canbnot gain access to the D-1 menu. I suspect my radio is broken. Please advise.

.......................you have to KEY UP on link to reflector. you will hear LINK ESTABLISHED. after you hear that THEN go to USE REFLECTOR......and you linked. ask for radio check.

if my nearest repeater is 51 miles away , it is probably to far for me too use the dstar .......right?

Not necessarily. With the right combination of antenna gain, a low loss feedline, a tower and/or an excellent location you might be able to use it at 51 miles. See if there is an amateur FM repeater co-located with the Dstar machine. If you can work the FM repeater then you have a chance.
Of course, you can go the DVAP route; not quite as satisfying but better than no Dstar at all. I used a DV4mini recently, and for about $140 that's the least expensive option though it requires a PC and Internet connection.

2 possible reasons for this, depending on where you are around the world.
      - You might be too far away from the nearest repeater.
      - Your radio may have had a CPU reset which could have wiped the memories.
