I'm taking my test on 4/19. Havent purchased this radio yet, just doing my research. I agree with Jason about the mic cable issue. I didn't realize that the mic does not plug into the head unit. Where I was planning on mounting everything, this might be a deal breaker. More research is required. Congrats!!
It's called the "deluxe" model, with advanced child quieting. There's no mount so they can use it as a really expensive etch-a-sketch. GREAT radio, all the same.
I remote mounted the radio body unit in my Jeeps overhead console. Routed extension cable to an Amazon sourced bulkhead receptacle for the head unit. The head unit has another small extension from the dash mounted receptacle so is easily removed and stashed away in my open jeep. A short extension cable for the microphone also installed in the body to another amazon sourced bulkhead receptacle on the overhead console. Microphone easily stashed away with head unit. Works great and is very clean install.
You know, Jason, you saved my soul with this video. I couldn’t get it to take the tone and I literally thought it just wasn’t working. I thought I had a bad rig LOL. I’m coming from the Kenwood world and Icom is not only different, the way they write manuals is different; I couldn’t find what I needed. Thanks for the video. Now, finish the truck setup and do the video ;)
Hey thanks for that! Glad you got it working. The truck install has taken me too long, I need to get back to it, but I have made some progress lately. 73 and thanks for watching
Wow! I didn't know you were recording when we made the QSO! You can use a generic CAT5 or CAT6E Ethernet cable and a female/female connector to extend your mic cable. That's how it's setup in my car. Same goes for the head unit. Happy New year, Jason! DE W5AJO
Hey Sean, thanks for the QSO. I left the radio on 146.520 for a few days after this recording, and I have been hearing some good traffic over there. I guess it is time to start monitoring Simplex again.
I just got the 5100 myself for my extended cab truck and that was my first thought as well. What a design flaw. Its like whoever designed the radio never actually installed what they were designing. I had to order a Network Extension Cable to lengthen the microphone cable with so the microphone would reach the front of the truck where the head unit is mounted.
Great review! I just passed my Tech exam on Thursday and this is the radio I ordered today. I'm going to be using it as my base for now. Looks like a great radio. Thanks for the help. KO4OTV 73.
I mounted my in the trunk and used a lido mount for the display head and bolted to the passenger seat bolt. To extend the microphone, I grabbed a network cable and RJ45 coupler - need 8 conductors. Plug the microphone into the coupler/network cable and the other end of network cable to radio. Control cable is long enough to reach for most cars. You may want an external speaker if the radio is in the trunk. When I leave the car I take the display head (magnetically attached) and only two cables and the mount are visible. Take care with the display head - popped the glass and repair is $$$. I put the display head in a pelican case for safe transport.
i love this radio....its old i guess. this video is 5 yrs old and ive had my call sign and radio 4 yrs....sheeeesh. this radio was EASY to learn on as a novice cause it shows and does ALOT. the screen helped so much. was 1st radio after i received callsign 2020/5
Hi Jason, I have been watching your videos and really like them! I bought an ID-5100A Deluxe and the difference is only the control head mounting bracket. IComm seems to mean "iCom without mounting hardware. " When installing the radio in my Jeep Wrangler I installed a double female RJ-45 in my dash replacing a cigarette lighter jack. I ran a 6 foot UTP cable from the back of the jack to the transceiver. Now the mic looks like a factory install.
I just bought the radio as well. I used a cat 6 ethernet shielded extension cable from amazon - cost about as much as a coupler and it works. I think the cable ICOM sells is the same - just 8 times the price!
The mounting bracket they include is for the control head only. Check to see if it came with the Bluetooth board in the deluxe model. Their site has it listed as an option. They are also sold out at the present time. If it did, you can pair it with an Android device with software from the Icom American website to do some features. You can also use an Android device with the Icom data cable or the RT-Systems Orange cable. Tied to a computer, you can run D-rats over those cables too. I put velcro strips on the bottom of mine and use that to hold it in place on the transmission hump of my pickup truck. That way, it is easy to pull it out and hook it up in the house for base operations. Easiest way to program it is to use an SD card and download the repeater lists from www.dstarinfo.com. It will give you Dstar and Analog FM stations in your area and let you import it into the radio with the card.
Yes I agree Jason with you on the design not good, i was going to buy this Radio for D Star I hope Icom will come out with a Better Design for now i use My Open Spot 3 THanks for your Awesome Videos
The comparable radio from Yaesu (FTM-400XDR) has the same setup where the mic plugs into the radio body. Face is remote mount only. Also, ICOM does include software and that's one thing the SD Card is used for... programming the radio without a cable.
I have a yaesu ftm400xdr. I haven’t used it much. I ended up getting an icom id52. I’m liking it so much that I’m about to sell my yaesu 400 and get an icom 5100.
Jason, I just bought an ID-5100A at the Ham Holiday hamfest this weekend. I agree that the lack of a mounting bracket for the radio body, a head bracket and a mic extension cable in the deluxe version is disheartening. I wish they had included those in the package. Looking forward to getting it setup in my shack for D-Star use. 73 de Bobby KF5GTX
I mount mine in the back of SUV, the problem is the speaker in with the main unit and without blasting the volume you can’t hear the radio. So far I’ve bought the mic extension cable, and mounting bracket looks like I now need to buy a speaker.
I wasn't happy about ICOM not including the mounting bracket for the IC-7100. It is a mobile radio! BUT there is a microphone jack in the Head and the Body!
I know this is an older Vid. Just pulled the trigger on this radio got it for 369.00 anyway I have looked around and found I could 3d print a bracket for the head so save me some money (I am A new ham) I am hoping to get it soon. Thanks for your videos. 73, KO4ILG
Late to the discussuon here...just passed my technician exam .. still waiting for call sign. If you had to choose between the Yaesu ftm-400dr or the 5100 which would it be?
I think pretty much everyone has said what I think. I love Icom and I think they are the best, but this crap they did with this deluxe radio is so stupid. You buy a radio with a 12ft control cable but yet now I have to pay 30$ for a radio mouting bracket, 60$ for a mic ext. cable (from them), then you have to buy a speaker or two. I've used this radio in my van for a year an love it, my 8800 died in the house so I moved this radio in the house and now I have cables everywhere because of it. Why can't you just put a mic port on the head control unit?
I just bought this radio and finally got it hooked up in my car. I ran a cat 6 ethernet cable from the body to a plastic box I made for my center console that has two female to female ethernet adapters. So that working. I tried to run the head unit into an adapter in the same place, but that's not working. Idk if it's the adapter or the spare cordage I was using(that's my bet. I'll try to problem solve soon)
I think maybe Icom connects the Mic to the base unit instead of the head is so that on can easily take the head down and put it in the glove box without the mic trailing clumsily along. I don't need to do that but if I lived in a big city where security is a big issue, I probably would. I think you can even store the head somewhere and leave it on in the crossband setting so that you have the security and the ability to crossband. Also, if you put a mic connection on the head, it would necessitate a larger (less easy to stow) cable between the base and the head.
I agree on not understanding Icom's thought on not including a mounting bracket. Also, you can just use CAT5 to extend the mic; I would recommend getting shielded and not just regular. Maybe just 2 or 3 feet for your setup and then a female/female adapter for the end where the mic connects. This is how I did my FTM-400XDR which is the same design (remote head only radio and the mic connects to the body of the radio with no extension included, though a long cable for the head is included...so, Icom isn't the only one to do that, though it's still weird). Also, I'm not sure on the 5100 but I know on my Kenwood D710 you can select whether you want the audio for the A side and B side routed separately to the separate outputs or both to speaker 1 output - the 5100 might have the same option, not sure.
@@HamRadio2 That is my understanding. I did find one reference online that that user said they used CAT6 and not 5 and it worked fine. I guess grab a patch cable and give it a try...I think the coiled cord will unplug from the mic itself, too, if I remember right. That would tell you if there is some sort of cross over in the pins but I think it is straight through.
Hamradio 2.0: Yes, a regular RJ45 cable can be used as a mic extension. I use the exact same thing on both the Icom 5100 & Kenwood D710G. No issues here. And if you want, you can use a 6 pin RJ11 cable for the separation, so no need to buy Icom's over priced $6 cable.
Looks like a nice dual bander I have been in the camp that ALL mobile radios should be remote mount for years now... the mic should either connect to the head or give you an option to connect to the head OR the body, but not ONLY the body. I may be in the market for a new mobile dual bander which is the reason for my visit to this video. It would go in a 14' Subaru Forester. Power, Ground and antenna are ALL behind the back seat in the cargo area on the drivers side so running an additional mic extension back there would suck. Also of the school that a radio that originally sold for $700+ and still is in the high $300's MUST have every mount with it that is needed. for the radio body AND the control head anything less is just plain wrong of the mfg. Also I am a bit concerned about the touch screen... If I had to tap the touch screen two, three and sometimes four times like you were required to do on many occasions during this video I would literally want to rip the control head off the dash and throw the it out the window while driving down the highway at high speeds. Please tell me it really isn't THAT bad! ? Also this is a bit knit picky and I realize this but neither band on your radio put out the advertised 50 Watts... 42 Watts is a 40 Watt radio, 44-47 Watts is a 45 Watt radio, and ok 48 or 49 Watts can be a 50 Watt radio but output down in the low 40's is off by a full 15% of the rated output. 85 cents isn't a dollar and 42 watts isn't a 50 watt radio. lol Nick N9SSW
So I just bought a brand new icom 5100a deluxe also got me a Larsen VHF/UHF Mobile Antennas NMO2/70B I’m so excited to get it running.. Question is should I get two speakers for this system or just one external thanks KE8ODY
I have in ID-4100 and it came with the mobile mounting bracket in the UK, although it is not mentioned in the manual on the content list. I also think it's crazy that remote head radios don't have the option to plug the mic direct into the head unit.
Hello sir I would like to ask what is your opinion about touch screen.... Is it too sensitive? Does it responding well? Thanksgiving any comments would be useful! 73! Have a nice day!
No, I don't think it is too sensitive. I think it is just about right. It helps that the screen is so large, and the text on the screen is also kinda large, so it makes it easier to hit the key/button you are trying to touch.
So I just came across this video as I am considering a 5100 but...did the video of the truck setup that you mentioned was in the works get posted somewhere at some point? I don't recall seeing it but may have missed it.
No, haven't posted that one yet. Once the weather gets warm, I will be doing some videos of the entire truck setup. I have been running the ID5100 in the truck for a while now, I just haven't recorded a video of it
Using the control head for the mic connection could be problematic since control head mounting is usually not as rigid as the body of the radio. I think the hardware to mount and cables to connect should at least be an inexpensive option when purchasing a radio and not $30 for a $2 bracket.
Other radios have done it this way with success. This radio head is already big and bulky (which I like in this application) so I can't see how making a mic connection on the head would be much different.
And if you are interested, Jason, I have a set of files that have most of the repeaters that I could find in the us that have gps coordinates for set up for use with the Dr near repeater function of this radio I could share
I found the magnetic face mount to be a great way to mount the head to most anything that will take a screw. The neodymium magnets are super strong and convenient for quick removal. Nice job on the video KE0JVS
Great info a shame this radio is as old as it is. It looks feature rich. You Sir, are the first youTube reviewer to actually have the contrast/Brightness adjustment so the screen doesn't look washed out. I really like how easy it is access primary operations. Just curious, how that screen looks in daylight in your truck You mentioned you were going to install it. I'm using an old Yaesu FT8500 Mr Potato head Dual band, the display is excellent for a radio that is over 20 years old hoping to pick one of these up during the Black Friday coming up.
you need to find a Kenwood TM-742a that is currently discontinued it is there Tri-band unit with all 3 bands your looking for. Triple receive function with triple display The TM-742A/E has a maximum output of 50 watts (2 m) and 35 watts (70 cm). There are also four optional FM band units -- 10 m (50 watts), 6 m (50 watts), 1.25 m (25 watts)*, 70 cm (35 watts), and 23 cm (10 watts) -- to endow the TM-742A/E with tri-band status. For low-power operations, there are 5- and 10-watt settings (1 W with the 23-cm band unit). *Not available in Europe
What I don’t understand is why they didn’t put the mic jack on the head.. to have the mic up front you have to get a extension cord and thread it from the back to the front if you put the base in the very back of the vehicle like most people do….
Sorry, last one. There's a plexiglass mount made for desktop use. It comes with high friction rubber feet to stop it chattering around whilst you're operating/programming. Where in your house are you? I ask because I noticed you got a GPS lock eventually, in the video. My old FTM-100DR locked, and I'm in a second floor room with one window. My own room for my shack. Yes, my wife understands the importance of having a quiet place to - well - play. ;-)
What kind of touchscreen is it? Is it true touch screen, or do you need to press the on-screen harder than a "proper" touchscreen. I'm #3 on a *waitlist* for the 5100. Presently there's NONE IN THE COUNTRY. They've got more coming by the end of June, though. Can't wait, and thanks for the intro, dude.
I just cleaned out a house to day and was given all kinds of old radio stuff...I know nothing about it but have looked things up on eBay. Very shocked at some of the prices. What’s the best way to sell? I know nothing about this stuff.
Once I stop being lazy and get it installed, it probably will be LOL. No, honestly the cold weather has prevented me from getting this setup the way I want, but I am hoping to accomplish that in the next couple of weeks.
Good video :) and I like the T-Shirt :) w/ Captain Picard :) I still have my ID880H D-Star Dual Band mobile that I bought at Richmond Frostfest (VA) back on February 2, 2013. It is better to program it by computer than by hand/manually. Radio still works. I use Repeaterbook.com to find frequencies in my area and also have Air, VHF Marine and Railroad programmed for Receive - Only. I need to get a radio that doesn't have the multi-semented alpha-numeric and character display. 6 large and 2 small. That ID5100A has an easy to read display. If Icom would make a DMR Dual band mobile with a separation kit, I would buy it. Not all vehicles, nowadays, are 2-way/ham radio friendly , i.e. 2014 Jeep Latitude. I have a CAT-5 cable to extend the mic cable using a mating connector between the two. I am using RT Systems w/ the programming cable [Orange]. 73s de WB4UR, Sean
I've got that radio, it's awesome! I got into dstar before dmr. Dmr in the seattle area is booming. Same'ish abilities as dstar but at a fraction of the price.
Hey Jason, is this your first time getting into Dstar? If so welcome to the club and hope to catch you on the air. Met you at the Rayne Hamfest last year.
I've had it in my truck for a few months now and I have no issues. No desense, and RX is pretty solid. I think my main problem is that I have it on a magmount antenna, but even with that, I am able to hear pretty much anything I want to.
Thanks for your reply. HRO has both and it’s about a 150 dollar difference. I can wing it but was wondering what the big draw is with the Kenwood vs the Icom. I suppose what makes this the better choice. Thanks again!
Icom has always been my favorite radio. However.... I absolutely will not buy the 5100 because they will not provide the mounting bracket. That is total BS! I'm tired of being taken advantage of by these companies. It's no wonder the chinese brands are outselling the Japanese models.
How come none of the chinese makers are delving into the HF and SSB stuff? It'd be sweet to see a knock-off 706mk2G and/or IC7000... add 220 to the IC7000, for like 400-500$ and I'd be happy.
They do have an extender available for the mic, depending on where you want to mount the radio. If the body is under the front seat or under the dash, the length of the mic cable is usually sufficient.
It has the separation kit, just not the mic extension or the mobile mounting bracket. But the separation cable and faceplate mount are included in the Deluxe model.
It really sucks when you spend all that money on a mobile radio and then have to buy mounting hardware on top of the money you just forked out for a nice new rig... Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way? 73 From N6FTW..
@@HamRadio2 I was under the impression that dprs is a proprietary format of aprs and doesn't necessarily "play nice" with web apps like aprs.fi, etc. Could be off base there

85 cents isn't a dollar and 42 watts isn't a 50 watt radio. lol

Can you do into the memroy banks in more detail? Can i do FM on both sides with 2 different memeory banks scanning?
Can you also get to the gmrs freqs?? How do you program gmrs repeaters or did I just buy a 400.00 paper weight???
It's a ham radio not gmrs
I have been running the ID5100 in the truck for a while now, I just haven't recorded a video of it
@@HamRadio2 Sounds good, Jason. Still like the ID5100? Do you recommend it as a solid dual band radio?
What antenna are you using for truck and field.
Comet SBB5
Using the control head for the mic connection could be problematic since control head mounting is usually not as rigid as the body of the radio. I think the hardware to mount and cables to connect should at least be an inexpensive option when purchasing a radio and not $30 for a $2 bracket.
Other radios have done it this way with success. This radio head is already big and bulky (which I like in this application) so I can't see how making a mic connection on the head would be much different.
@@HamRadio2 I would agree that it shouldn't be an issue if it is well mounted.
And if you are interested, Jason, I have a set of files that have most of the repeaters that I could find in the us that have gps coordinates for set up for use with the Dr near repeater function of this radio I could share
Sure, send it over. I am good on QRZ
@@HamRadio2 sent, my friend
Jason, do you have a video of your truck’s final setup with the Ram Mounts?
Not yet, it isn't completed. I will when I am done.
It's called a deluxe if it comes with the magnetic face Mount bracket
Yes I mentioned that in the comments of the original post.
Triple receive function with triple display
The TM-742A/E has a maximum output of 50 watts (2 m) and 35 watts (70 cm).
Is this still a relevant radio to use in 2024? I've been looking at getting one soon and was just curious
Yes it is still my main radio in my truck
What I don’t understand is why they didn’t put the mic jack on the head.. to have the mic up front you have to get a extension cord and thread it from the back to the front if you put the base in the very back of the vehicle like most people do….
Sorry, last one. There's a plexiglass mount made for desktop use. It comes with high friction rubber feet to stop it chattering around whilst you're operating/programming.
Where in your house are you? I ask because I noticed you got a GPS lock eventually, in the video. My old FTM-100DR locked, and I'm in a second floor room with one window. My own room for my shack. Yes, my wife understands the importance of having a quiet place to - well - play. ;-)
God I want one so bad
What kind of touchscreen is it? Is it true touch screen, or do you need to press the on-screen harder than a "proper" touchscreen.
I'm #3 on a *waitlist* for the 5100. Presently there's NONE IN THE COUNTRY. They've got more coming by the end of June, though. Can't wait, and thanks for the intro, dude.
It's a true touchscreen
I just cleaned out a house to day and was given all kinds of old radio stuff...I know nothing about it but have looked things up on eBay. Very shocked at some of the prices. What’s the best way to sell? I know nothing about this stuff.
Send me an email with the list of what you have, and your location. kc5hwb @ gmail
Ham Radio 2.0 I will take pictures of everything and email you as soon as I get off work.
Just got off...about to take and send pictures now.
Is this your favorite mobile now or is there another that beats this one?
Once I stop being lazy and get it installed, it probably will be LOL. No, honestly the cold weather has prevented me from getting this setup the way I want, but I am hoping to accomplish that in the next couple of weeks.
And the icom software is free, and rt does make a software package as well
Really so I just need to buy to thert cable
Good video :) and I like the T-Shirt :) w/ Captain Picard :)
I still have my ID880H D-Star Dual Band mobile that I bought at Richmond Frostfest (VA) back on February 2, 2013.

Hello dear Sir, I think the port is RG-12 and not RG-11, RG-11 has Only 4 contacts. Further a nice Video, Thank you.
I've got that radio, it's awesome! I got into dstar before dmr. Dmr in the seattle area is booming. Same'ish abilities as dstar but at a fraction of the price.
Did this deluxe dome wirh the Bluetooth unit
No
@@HamRadio2 just got mine today gonna throw it on my Larsen and start talking
Hey Jason, is this your first time getting into Dstar? If so welcome to the club and hope to catch you on the air. Met you at the Rayne Hamfest last year.
I've had a couple of DSTAR HTs for a while, including the D74, which I reviewed over a year ago on this show.
How s the sensitivity of the two receivers?
I've had it in my truck for a few months now and I have no issues. No desense, and RX is pretty solid. I think my main problem is that I have it on a magmount antenna, but even with that, I am able to hear pretty much anything I want to.
This or the Kenwood D710AG?
If price isn't an issue, the Kenwood
Thanks for your reply. HRO has both and it’s about a 150 dollar difference. I can wing it but was wondering what the big draw is with the Kenwood vs the Icom. I suppose what makes this the better choice. Thanks again!
Can you control it with gpredict for satellite ops?
Not sure on that, I will look it up.
Icom has always been my favorite radio. However.... I absolutely will not buy the 5100 because they will not provide the mounting bracket. That is total BS! I'm tired of being taken advantage of by these companies. It's no wonder the chinese brands are outselling the Japanese models.
When you say "will not provide" what do you mean?
@@HamRadio2 simply that the bracket needed for mounting the radio itself is not in the box but is sold as an accessory.
what can you do to extend the mic cable?
They make an extension cable for it
How come none of the chinese makers are delving into the HF and SSB stuff? It'd be sweet to see a knock-off 706mk2G and/or IC7000... add 220 to the IC7000, for like 400-500$ and I'd be happy.
I've often wondered that also.
I agree Jason the microphone should have been able to plug in the head.. A bad design
They do have an extender available for the mic, depending on where you want to mount the radio. If the body is under the front seat or under the dash, the length of the mic cable is usually sufficient.
Yes mine will be mounted under my front seat, but still... I think they should have designed the head to accept a mic connection.
New Ham and the 51ooa looks way too hard for me to figure out. Bummer!
Old post, but probably one of the easiest radios to program. Show me another mobile that you can edit a name as easy as this one?
Do we need a special cable to program this guy
yes
So no 50 watts
As simple as Property Calibrating a Wattmeter I’m sure.😱😳🤣😂
Im buying that rig for Satt work
Good choice
I dont why icom can't add the separation kit, And the price to buy it is too high.
It has the separation kit, just not the mic extension or the mobile mounting bracket. But the separation cable and faceplate mount are included in the Deluxe model.
Can anybody help I can’t get back on my memory for my repeaters and reReflectors can anybody help please
I guess ICOM forgot how to do Ham Radio. All the old guys must have retired.
It really sucks when you spend all that money on a mobile radio and then have to buy mounting hardware on top of the money you just forked out for a nice new rig... Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way? 73 From N6FTW..
This video is a few years old - I think they are sold with brackets now.
Jason, sent you a private Facebook Messenger message ref my ID-5100 👍🏻
Doesn't this use DPRS instead of APRS? TO me that's a dealbreaker.
By DPRS do you mean digital only?
@@HamRadio2 I was under the impression that dprs is a proprietary format of aprs and doesn't necessarily "play nice" with web apps like aprs.fi, etc. Could be off base there
