BS/MD programs aren't as popular as traditional routes for medical school for a reason. They are hard to get into and challenging once you're in. Im graduating from one this year and here to spill the pros and cons of this type of program and if its for you!

I'm a high school junior wondering how I'm supposed to shadow a doctor or something because as a result of the virus, doctors and hospitals have been VERY busy since then. Making it nearly IMPOSSIBLE for me to volunteer and shadow doctors during my sophomore year and junior year (right now). Is this something interviewers won't hold against me?

Shadowing during this time will be especially tough, so I would look into other routes to get some experience and show that you are interested in medicine. Get Creative! Could volunteer at a COVID Lab or testing center, organize a group that sews masks for shelters, etc. Lots of ways to show you are interested without having to shadow or actually be in a hospital. Look for summer camps or programs too. I did one for a week and it made a big difference and showed them that I would even take time out of my summer to learn about medicine and science!

Do you remember how you did on your SATs? Did you apply from the state of Missouri or a state nearby; because my state is MUCH farther away and on the UMKC website they stated that they give priority to students from nearby states? What type of financial aid does UMKC offer for both the undergrad and med school tuition costs?

I took the ACT and not the SAT. The average stats for my school can be found here: med.umkc.edu/bamd/admission-requirements-eligibility/
And I am from missouri. The program definitely has more spots open for people in the midwest just because that is where the program is well known, but that doesn't mean you cant get in from anywhere. I have people in my class all the way from california and even out of the country! They will have good opportunities for financial aid during undergrad if you aren't in the 6 year program. The med school also has some scholarships but not as many

I'm a rising senior in high school interested in medicine, but I am still contemplating whether or not to apply. If you are accepted into a BS/MD program, is it possible to reject the offer, or drop out in the middle of the program? I just want to make sure this path is right for me, and am carefully considering all options because I'm also interested healthcare as a whole. Regardless, thank you for making this detailed video about BS/MD programs!

You absolutely can reject the offer and leave whenever you like if you realize it is not for you. I would definitely think carefully like you are about what the right path is for you because it is much more difficult to have to drop out and go down a different path because that will be on your academic record

Is BS/MD harder than normal medical school?

Tough to say! The content that you are learning is pretty much the same, but the thing that makes BA/MD programs more challenging is the condensed nature of the program, meaning its likely, especially in the beginning of the program, that you have more classes and responsibilities to juggle at one time than the average undergrad/med student would. Its all about prioritization and staying organized!

I just finish my first year as a college student. And I just heard about this program, but I don't know how to start it since I am in college? Pls help

There is a way to still apply for the program as long as you have under a certain number of college credits. Otherwise once you graduate with your undergrad degree you can apply for the MD portion of the program as well!

i’m a high school senior debating whether or not if i want to commit to a ba/md program or the traditional route. i wanted to know if in the bs/md program you have the flexibility to pursue things that aren’t really related to health sciences because i really want to take different courses and research different things.

Absolutely! In my program for example, there was plenty of time for me to take electives in other subjects. I had an art elective, a medical spanish elective for foreign language. There are lots of options and depending on how many college credits you would have from AP or dual enrollment, you could have even more free time to pursue a minor in your other interests during the beginning of the program!
