LOVE the idea of having “open” (non-paneled) areas around the library. You can paint them a great color, and have some paintings/pictures around. I think if you bring the paneling all the way up and around, you will end up with a darker room (you could still hang paintings/pictures). It’s really exciting watching the library come together!

Years ago I worked retail in the pillow area! They came in big boxes that looked like they would burst! So if you needed 6 or more you would open the top and stand back! Poof! Because there was no way getting them back in the box what with the slippery plastic ! 😂 🎉

Hi Billy I agree 100% with your choice of only going the height of the bookcase cupboards, if it was fully panelled the entire height of the bookcases it will make the library very dark, I know originally librarys were fully panelled but today's taste is slightly different so putting your stamp on it will make the space way more welcoming.
No matter what you decide you will have divided thoughts but at the end of the day this is your convent and you need to have what you like.
I hope Gwendaline and the boys are well, sending you lots of love xxxx

The trim and wainscoting look fantastic! I was happy to hear you say you're plasterboarding then attaching the paneling to it. Much cleaner and more energy efficient. That's how we would do it. You're meticulous in your work, Billy, and it shows in the finished product. It's such a pleasure watching you (et al) putting the convent back together! Bravo 👏👏👏

Yes I think your new vision is terrific. When you hang pictures on the plaster board they should show up better than if they were on the wood panels. It's OK to change your mind on how to do things, because once you get into a project and stuff starts coming together you may start to see things on a different level.

In the US we call the waist high paneling - Wainscoting. I think it’s a brilliant solution. It will be beautiful and probably cost less.

@@gerryhartung736 The word originated in Britain but is based on a 14th century German or Dutch Word for Wall boards (wageschot/waegenschotten) or from a partition on a German Waggon (.......and it's "Tome" for a large scholarly book .......and I have spelt Waggon correctly for the UK!)!?!

The half panels idea sounds excellent. It will also give you much more freedom for decor pieces and paintings that you might find in your antiquing adventures. You will not only be able to display the books that you find but also paintings, mirrors, tapestries, the list is endless. I am all for more antiquing (especially with Ryan) and more freedom in your Decor choices.

I agree with your approach and the two-fold rationale that you laid out. You have a real gift for envisioning how these elements will combine and complement each other.

If you use a dimmer switch for your shelf, LED lighting, it would give the possibility to raise the brightness on that shelf above and below when looking for a specific book, and could be turned back down to dim afterwards.
The creation of rectangle open space between the cabinets would be wonderful. It would make the room look much larger and open. Light would be able to reflect and brighten the room much more than if used only panel.
    Great show ! Thanks

Love the new plans for the library. Please can we have some glorious colour in the library? It is a place of learning, luxury and inspiration, so it would be lovely to find a paint colour that elevates the feeling in the room. Beware of too much light in the bookcases, paper and leather will fade just like sunshine does to other objects. 🙂

I love the idea of going for the wainscoting and moulding rather than fully panelling the room. It gives you a chance to step away from all the neutrals (I do love neutrals, but too much will have you feeling like you’re living in a beige box!) and that library is screaming out for a dark academia aesthetic, with maybe a deep green or even a Roman clay wall colour to give all that oak the gravitas it deserves ❤

3000K leds will give the room a buttery look. I’ve used Hafele in the past. Easy to assemble, plug and play….but somewhat pricey. Remote control can set different lighting scenes within the room with built-in dimmer. You’ll need a step down transformer from 208V to 24V. These led lights are really energy efficient. They use about 1/10th -1/20th the power than an incandescent or fluorescent requires.

Having the paneling only part way up allows the bookcases to look “ grander”. If murals are decided for the walls, painting them on fabric that is then mounted to the wall space might be easier. The murals could be painted off site instead of in situ. Just a thought. Whatever you decide upon, I know it will be splendid!

I really like Wainscotting. It's about 1/3 the total height of the walls. It's warm & protects the wall where it might get scuffed up by chairs or furniture. Can't wait to see the finished job!

Ooh 😮 love the sound of the lower level panelling. That will keep the lovely light and airy gmfeel and the bookcases and panelling will really shine against the plasterboard/paint 👌

A paneled wainscoting, a warm paint colour on the top, will set off the oak wood, make the giant room feel more cozy. Some comfy chairs in little groups, were people can sit visit with a coffee or tea, or a cold beer

I think the changes are going to be beautiful no matter if you go with a mural or fabric. It will lighten the room and make more decadent versus heavy but warm and cozy. I love the new changes.

I like the new plan for the library. The wainscotting at the bottom will look great.

WOW! Installing the plasterboard makes such a difference! I would have loved seeing the paneling throughout, but it is your esthetic that counts. It will look glorious! Thank you for sharing your journey, Billy.

I think a room completely paneled makes the room look smaller. May I suggest a decorative moulding around the top of the walls - 17th century plaster style - perhaps a vine of oak leaves for instance. Small, tasteful, and appropriate to the age of the building.
Of course, if you have a family crest, you could place a plaster shield at each corner of the room. Fun huh?

I do like that it's not all paneling, But what about running the wood trim parallel the top of the bookshelf through out the room.
