      Thank you for what you’re doing, Natalie. I am 19 year old girl from Armenia and I am going to “lecture” 6th graders on ecology this Friday in my former school. The message I want to get across is CARE. When they learn to care for the environment, they will start caring for other things as well. And of course this goes without saying, I am going to make it like a discussion and appeal to the kids’ values and not just fill their heads with bunch of facts. First and foremost, we need them not to know too much about the issue, but to act. Doing what’s in our power at the moment is how we can make a difference.

    Plastic waste has been such a huge problem in Asia. In Indonesia, for instance, if you go to a restaurant, chances are the plastic straws will be wrapped in plastic wraps to ensure that the straws are “clean”. Both the plastic wraps and straws will end up in the rubbish bins after a single use. This practice is further encouraged by bubble tea shops where they use plastic cups, straws, wraps and also bags for takeaways. A single purchase of the drink would mean three or four (if it’s for take away) plastic materials being discarded after use.

    This talk by the outstanding Natalie Fee is such a heartwarming, optimistic talk about what happens when awareness and passion connect to practical action. City to Sea, the charity that Nat set up, are doing great work stopping plastic pollution at source. Watch, learn and then make sure that you stop flushing the health of oceans down the pan.

    Being a country girl it was never an option to flush the contents of what you discussed in your video. So I am happy to be informed of these issues. I had no idea these items are being flushed. I grew up with the ocean all around me and the beach was my playground and I used to gather up the bits of plastics I found and this is over 20 yrs ago. I would cry thinking of how humans could be so careless. Then I grew up and the disillusionment grew and consumed me became a careless human in other areas of plastic magic act. Out of sight out of mind. NO LONGER can I turn a blind eye. It is never to late to step up and step out to become a steward of those that have no voice. I will make changes and share this video. Thank you for this information. It was well presented and a very gentle but effective way to enlighten me and give me the courage to find my inner activist.

    I have been treating wastewater for almost two years now. It's amazing what people flush down the toilet and think that it will biodegrade. Plastics and rags are horrible for the pumps that I use to help disinfect the water before it reaches the river that leads to the Chesapeake Bay. If more people were more aware of what they were flushing, I think that they would value their rivers and bays more.

    Does people really do that? Put plastic in their loo?
    I'm from Norway and we have one of the best plumbing systems in the world. Plumbing systems that can cope with almost everything. (That's why Norwegians tend to clog up the plumbing when they are abroad.) Without fear of clogging the system, I still would never flush anything else than the three P's down the toilet. We also have advanced waste water treatment facilities, so all the "grey water" is filtered, UV treated and practically drinkable before it is released back in the nature. But still, I would never flush anything non organic in the loo or the sink. Shame on those who does.

      Sadly there are many countries where they are not aware of the consequences of flushing down things. Many people are just lazy or don't think or care what the consequences could be. I'm happy to read that in your country there is this "common sense" to be respectful with the environment :)

      Exactly. I dont know why everybody seems to generally hate on plastic.

    • @oboebuddy15
      @oboebuddy15 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@theupsider Because it's horrible for the environment, from the production of it down to the disposal of it. If EVERYONE got behind the plastic-free movement (which I admit is highly unlikely), then a change can be made. But every little bit helps. Whatever you can do, it's certainly better for the environment than what you're doing now. What needs to happen, though, is for large companies to oust plastic packaging, and we can help with that by "voting with our dollar," meaning opting to buy sustainable products other than plastic. There are a lot of other resources about this across the internet, including here on TH-cam, which you should check out if you're curious about how to reduce and eventually eliminate plastic waste. I understand where you're coming from, and I understand that one person isn't able to save the world just by switching to plastic-free items, but as I said, every little bit helps. The average person produces 4.5 pounds of plastic waste EVERY DAY. If even 100 people were eliminating plastic, that would save 450 pounds from going to landfill DAILY. I know this is just a drop in the ocean of billions, even trillions of pounds of plastic in landfills, but no number is insignificant, especially if that number keeps rising.
      tl;dr - plastic is dangerous; check out internet resources about reducing plastic waste if you're interested; even the smallest actions help in the long run.

      Yes it is exhausting to see plastic bags everywhere. But we can change. Using reusable straws. No plastic carry bags and bottles. Reusable cutlery. Avoiding tissues and wet wipes as much as possible. Every time we need to buy containers we should buy glass or stainlesss steel. Buying rechargable batteries too. Nothing plastic. If we start one rule at a time at our homes. We will see tremendous difference. We will be able to reduce a 50 to 80kgs of plastic waste and that for me is a biggg thing.

    The change should start at individual level as well as industrial level. Some of the essential items are still packed in plastic most of the time. Desperate to make a change we change every possible plastic thing we can replace with an alternative and yet still end up buying a considerable amount of essential items which are wrapped in plastic packaging. That section should be changed by the industrial sector. They should change in to compostable packaging or other alternative which will not harm the nature cuz this is an urgent matter which needs to be addressed!!!

    Somewhere between 2:30 to 3:00 a big statement is made about "seeing the toilet as part of the water cycle (instead of seeing it as a bin)".

    I'm far more worried about what's out there now. We can build house bricks and roads with the stuff that piled up in mountains but the only people that seem to have thought of this so far are the toy makers. WHY? This stuff will last centuries till we can work out how to dispose of it for good.

    How about a $1.00 or £1.00 or € 1.00 etc. Deposit on all plastic items that are non biodegradable in short time spans? Another area of concern is clothing, the microfibers from washing clothes winds up in the sewage sludge and when land spread the plastic fibers persist and reduce earth worm populations, so that has to change as well. We cannot escape plastic, it pops up everywhere! 🐥

    The irony is that she's wearing a Polyester Shirt, which is a type of plastic material, while speaking in front of the audience about plastic pollution. I can tell just by looking at her shirt because it's so shiny. FYI, Polyester Garments will release micro-plastic particles into the waterways each time they are being washed in the washing machines. They are even worse than plastic bottles because the particles are so small that most people don't even notice them and the sewage treatment plants won't stop them from releasing into the seas.

    I can't be bothered to listen to all of this - someone who just found out about the sewage system and has done some succesful lobbying to some supermarkets. Wow - how patronising. I was a geography teacher on and off for 15 years and we had to teach the Water cycle and explain the sewage system to kids at about age 8 and again at about 11 or 12. And explain rainforest ecosystems as a demonstration of all ecosystems (mainly done in Biology tho). And explain the manufacturing process (the Story of Stuff - duh!) They kept messing about with the national curriculum and its now not necessary. Even if they bought it back, Academies can make up their own curriculum. How short sighted of the government, and what a waste of time for teachers like me that lobbied to get this sort of thing on the curriculum and developed lots of resources for it. Just so irritating. I am not especially inspired to share this video and this woman's ego over and above supporting a proper education program in our schools

    • @mgmt97
      @mgmt97 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How sad that you're feeling patronised by someone actively trying to make a change outside of their comfort zone. She's directing her speech towards ADULTS who either didn't learn any of this or who are oblivious to the impact, who will, in turn, (hopefully) teach their own children alongside their schools. What is bad about this? Can't you both work together to make a change and educate people on their environmental impact? Why is it bad that someone went out there and pressured companies to make a change for the better? Why does her "ego" diminish the positive impact she's making? Why do you have to put people down for trying to make a change? Don't get me wrong, it's not that I disagree with the fact that a proper education program is desperately needed, but these things coexist with each other. Not one single action will change the world for the better, but every single one that both individuals, companies and collectivities can do counts towards a positive change.
