  • We live in a world of plastic. From the clothes we wear, the electronics we use to the food we buy, our lives our surrounded by, and depend on, plastic products. Over time, all of these plastic products break down into smaller and smaller pieces to become ‘microplastics,’ or plastics smaller than five millimeters. As we study microplastics, we are learning that they are everywhere - in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. In this talk, Dudas will lead us through a day of plastic use, how and where we use and generate microplastics, and what we can do about it. Sarah Dudas is a biologist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, a biology professor at Vancouver Island University and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Victoria. For the last seven years she has led the Ecological Interactions Research Program, working with federal and provincial governments, industry and non-profit organizations to study the effects of human activities on coastal ecosystems. Her research includes investigating marine biodiversity across regional and local scales and the effects of historical and contemporary shellfish farming practices on surrounding ecological communities. Recently, she has focused on the issue of microplastics and their presence in the marine environment and our seafood. Dudas’s professional affiliations include the Hakai Institute, Canadian Society of Ecology and Evolution and the Aquaculture Association of Canada. She is also a member of the United Nations-led Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection microplastics working group. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Plastics are not just in waters but are now in the atmosphere as well. Microplastic will continue to disintegrate to become even smaller and dangerous.

I remember the first liquid laundry detergent, when quilt material was always 1oo% cotton, when there was no creamora, when vegetables weren't in plastic containers. I miss those days. I also remember taking apart old cloths and using good parts to make new.....unless a time comes that it doesn't take both parents going out to earn a living there will be no reduction in time saving plastic usage. True but big companies and the government should be held responsible and accountable. They're the reason this problem has gotten so bad. Why put not only the blame but also the burden of responsibility on the consumer and individual? It isn't our fault that this problem has gotten out of hand so why are we expected to fix it?

Our need for plastic in everything we use is what leads to the production of it in the first place. The faster we accept our part in plastic becoming this mammoth of a problem the sooner we can put an end to the need and hence the subsequent production of it.
I agree that big corporations should be held responsible for producing it and making us dependable on it but we can only pass the blame so far. We need to do our part in curbing it and that will set the course for a change (albeit a small change but an immediate one).

There should be a ban on single-use plastic. A company, selling its product, should only be using recyclable plastic. There is a study which says that nano-plastics are in water bottles that people have been drinking unknowingly for years. I, for one, fear that the nano-plastics I have consumed have leeched into my body, and pose a risk to my health going forward.

If one considers all the ways plastics end up in the atmosphere, including tornados, wildfires encountering civilization, wind erosion, hurricanes, tsunamis and others- it seems necessary to place a one-use tax on plastics not intended for recycle and engage a national reclamation strategy using unemployed US workers(if they are tired of unemployment insurance) and introduce the next generation to what they will be spending time and money on to attempt reclamation of the earth from the plastics rampant within. This kind of sounds like mental illness… How much is the plastic really rubs off from the plastic things that we use and into our air?? We breathe? Or are we worried about us just about throwing the things away in general? Well the key is to buy things you don't want to throw away, not to get rid of plastic entirely. Plastic is extremely useful; the culture of buying new items constantly instead of reusing/repurposing/making the most of the what we have abundantly. I just wanted to be clear because the whole visual illustration of our plastic use feels a little misleading if it is not primarily concerned with single use plastic/plastic that is thrown away. I understand the anxiety about the contamination of the water supply. (from the plastic in our clothes wringing out in the washing machine). however: does it actually absorb through our skin cells/epithelial layers? Rather, does it pass along with our food into our feces? Maybe that could even help it decompose faster? Lol? I hope that helps ease some of the anxiety regarding the plastic in our every day life. , I believe in our collective ability to do the right thing when we need to.
