    Another great video. I got my full licence last June. I owe a massive thanks to you Russ I watched all your videos before my training and it really helped, along with good teaching from my riding school and your videos I passed first time. And your videos have giving me a lot of great advice and tips since. Thank you you've helped put another bike on the road along the south coast cheers 👍🏻

      I had 1 instructor who was an absolute arse, you knew you were doing well because he wouldn't say a word. All negativity and put downs. Changed schools and now have a brilliant instructor and now after 3 lessons I feel confident on the bike for the first time and have my test tomorrow!

      I was a pretty adequate rider by the time I took my mod 1 - lots of practice! - but totally bricked it :) - passed on 3rd try (foot down on U-turn for the 1st, not reaching high enough speed on emergency stop for the 2nd) hey ho...got it eventually.

    Even today 4 years later, that swerve avoidance still gives me the butterflies! A trick I was taught was to sing when doing slow manoeuvres. Sounds silly but takes your mind off over thinking especially when nervous.

    Understand with the avoidance about the revving making you seem like you're going faster. On the practices my instructor told me to keep it in a low gear and thrash it. Was never fast enough. When it came to the test went steady on the revs and a gear higher without thinking about it and then went 4 mph through the gates faster than the minimum

    Just watching this brings back the butterflies of doing my mod 1, Interestingly enough, I was on a ER-6N, i did my mod 1, then on the last day of my mod 2 training, a day before my test A 4x4 hit me on a mini roundabout and wiped the bike out!. Bike was fucked but i passed my mod 2 the next day 8-)

  • @UnknownProdrive
    @UnknownProdrive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Reminds me of my fail. Got it the second time. Foot down on the U turn. Mod 2 I found a lot easier due to my driving exp. Nerves can destroy an otherwise competent rider. Lose the nerves and it becomes easy. But that's easier said than done.

    Must say I like how professional you are yet you are still positive and give praise. Just did my second CBT and the trainer was horrible he did not shut up the entire day even on the road and his answer to mistakes was "You're going to fail" "I'm going to fail you if...." "You're not going to pass your test", I found it so stressful trying to listen and ride.
    My first car driving instructor was an ex army instructor and he was exactly the same, I changed instructor eventually, my first lesson I got in the car and he actually gave me a chance to drive and I drove perfectly, better than I had ever driven before. When I pulled over he asked me the things I did wrong and I told him everything before he had a chance to tell me, I felt although I was teaching myself to drive which gave me much more confidence in my ability.
    Sometimes I think it pays to try and understand the rider/driver you are teaching as to what methods of teaching they respond better to. Safe to say I will not be doing my A2 at the school I did my CBT.

    What I like about the course is that it has some solid emphasis on low speed control which applies well to congested traffic. The U.S. MSF course doesn't do enough of that and one of the hardest things for me to become smooth with was low speed crawling around and maneuvering. To this day it's the thing I'm rustiest with at the start of 'riding season' if I take a couple months off in the winter.
    They teach "no front brake" here with the wrong emphasis, it's presented as a fear of the front brake due to the huge audience of cruiser riders who are the instructors. They should be teaching that the rear brake is important at crawling speeds and transitioning to a stop, but they don't present it that way. Again a great vid.

    Of the hazard perception, theory test, CBT, mod 1, and mod 2, the only bit I failed on first time was the mod 1, knocking a cone ever over. Target fixation was my issue. Never got to practice much on the MOD1 which is a failing of most schools I think, they’re not ideally set up for it. The on road MOD2 is much better, but unlike Russ some instructors can be very shouty and patronising. That was 5 years ago now and I watched all Russ’s vids. Still look out for your uploads, always good to watch. 👍

    Thanks I enjoyed watching that. And I thought it was a difficult test back in 1967 !
    Really hope both riders pass their tests first time. Hopefully after all they have to go through these days to get a full licence it means less of them will not be riding like TT racers. Given what they have to go through anyone these days riding with L plates is todays cool for me.

    I never had to do any of this when I got bike license (In South Australia) which must be close to 40 years ago. Self taught in the traffic from day 1 and the riding test was basically a ride around the block and providing indicators and brake light were used and not a danger to any one else you passed.It's a lot better now with all the rider training we now have but I doubt I could do half the stuff I saw in this clip while riding my ST1100A. It's taken a little while to do but I can now do a U-turn with my partner on board and I can reverse my bike and trailer out of a parking space if I can't find a ride through space. Stuff you never learn in any course.I've also picked up some tips from your videos since I first saw one a few years a go.

    Very good video - lots of great content and well done for giving regular praise. I think there are 2 things you could work on as an instructor - don't mention the word "fail" so much. I counted 5 times. E.g "you touched a cone - that's a fail." Instead say - "next time, avoid the cone and you'll be sure to pass that exercise". Also you said "it's the sound that's getting you" (hazard avoidance) - how do you know? You don't - you may be right from experience, but telling someone what they are thinking can be very annoying. Try "sometimes, hearing the higher revs can make you think you're going faster than you are, so try it in 3rd and see if that feels better...".

    • @RoadcraftNottingham
      @RoadcraftNottingham  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Phil. Sometimes we need to use quite strong keywords to get it through to people, kinda tip-toeing around not using keywords, if you're not careful, can be dismissed by the trainee as not that important which is why I use strong keywords like "fail". Plus, it's not always the wording used, it's the whole picture, including the manner in which the info is delivered.
      I appreciate your comment....and score lol

      It's the same here in the UK, Module 1 Test seen here. Pass that then you can do your Module 2 test which is taken out on the roads with an examiner following you.

      Yeah, the exams are the same everywhere in Europe, maybe a little different locally but largely the same.
      These were decided by Europe and were no longer decided by the countries themselves, which is why these seem very similar when comparing UK to NL or Belgium (which is where I got it)

    In Poland we have similar slalom on practice, but we are told to look at the cone, not between the cones, unless I didn't understood correctly what the instructor was saying, which was possible, nonetheless, I failed the test. I didn't looked right and left before starting, which you have to do.

    Unfortunately my instructor isn’t this clear. So it’s only the emergency stop and hazard avoidance that’s marked on speed? And that’s anywhere between 30mpg and 40mph?
    The first high speed I was told should be between 20mph and 30mph.
    Got my test tomorrow 😬

      I thought most instructors take you to the actual test centre for practice.

      Yeah, they don't test on weekends, so if you've got a lesson at the weekend they usually let you into the actual test centre. At least that's what happens down our way. Assume it's the same everywhere.

      Coldfin9er Local test centre near me let you use the mod 1 site. I practised my mod 1 on the Saturday and Sunday and did my mod 1 Monday. Mod 2 Wednesday passed first time.

      mine was in a car park about 1/3 the size of these test sites so when i got there to do the test it was amazing to have all that room!

      Yeah mine was exactly the same when i did it, hired the test centre out on the Saturday a few weeks before the test. Did the entire day in the pissing rain, gave me a lot of confidence on the day.
