You are so much better than my CBT instructor... She kept calling me sir whenever I got something wrong.
This was really annoying as it became a code word for "you're an idiot". It made me feel like a naught kid in a class room (I'm 34 lol).
Your tone is measured and calming... Just what you need when you're thrown out into moving traffic for 2 hours after only just learning how the damn thing works lol
Wish you were nearer for my big bike test next summer. But I'm a Southern soft alas!
Thanks for all the really useful videos!
You're welcome. Not nice having an impatient instructor.
Looking for side road signs to determine speed limit is a great tip, never thought of it before.
Just want to say after watching your videos for hours i passed my mod 2 yesterday. Many thanks for your help. Sometimes there are questions that we forget to ask our instructor and to find the answer elsewhere is invaluable.
Tacrit1 Thanks for the feedback and congrats on passing your test. Ride safe and have fun
I love watching these videos because they're in my hometown of Nottingham. I'm a new bike rider so it's always good to watch videos like this and the fact it's where I live is a bonus. Thanks guys.
I really have appreciated all your videos I have seen so far. You are clear, calm, kind, (so far :-) ), skilled and no non-sense. I like the way you role model safe and smart riding. I had to ride to my doctor yesterday in the rain (not my favorite) but reviewing your rain riding video before going out the door was just what I needed. Thank you so much for your public service contributions. From California...
I have spent hours and hours watching your videos, partly because I use to live near Stapleford so I like to see if I recognise the routes you are on and mainly because your advice and instruction are very informative and comforting. I did my cbt 2 years a go and had a nasty fall during it. It really knocked my confidence. I have booked some training to do my cbt again in the near future and I can honestly say that your videos have been reassuring and very helpful in getting me into the right mind set.
If I still lived in Nottingham you can be absolutely sure that I would take up training with you as it quite clear to see that you would be an ideal instructor for someone like me.
As a teacher myself i don't get to hear many positive praising comments often and so I wanted to take the time to say how much your videos have had an influence on my mind set.
Thank you for that.
It would be lovely to keep in touch and let you know how I am getting on.
Thanks, Katy
Thank you for your great feedback, means a lot. Let me know how you get on.
+RoadcraftNottingham I certainly will. I am about to download your app :)
what a great trainer. you said more to your students in the first 3min than my instructor said to me in a week when i did my direct access. those lads will have a way better understanding of the everyday dangers on the road, as well as picking up riding tips and tricks to keep them safe. well done that man :)
What a nice instructor. Helpful, confidence building, polite and so obviously very knowledgable. So different to mine back in ‘95 in Hendon, North London. An intensive 4 day course with a yobbo boy racer.
you're so helpful! But above all calm and positive, my instructor when I my CBT was often unclear and whenever I did something wrong thanks to his unclearness he just yelled and yelled and yelled! I learned more from this video than a day with that bloke.
Im taking my Module 2 this Thursday the 10th & if im honest im dreading it, believe we always as earners worry to much about what to do instead of just doing it without hesitation. Your a brilliant instructor thanks for the very informative videos wish me luck
you are a great instructor , your students are lucky to have you teaching them
Very good instructions during the ride!
I just got my motorcycle license in April this year. During driving school I did not get that detailed feedback while I was driving. I find this extremely helpfull. Good job! Your pupils can rally be glad to have such a good and experienced instructor who rides a motorcycle himself.
I come from germany and this is not always the case here. Sometimes you will find instructors who have a motorcycle license but do not really ride a motorcycle themselves.
You seem like a great teacher, I'd have loved to have been taught by you.
As it is, I did the tests myself and somehow feel not as refined and whole as I could have been when learning. As it is now, I might will probably do some lessons in a few years if I suddenly realise I'm a crap rider.
i wish i had you as my CBT trainer. You seem like a really calm person who has the time and gives effort to improve a rider :)
Your entire approach to motorcycling reminds me of "The Seven Ps" taught to me by my biology teacher in year 10; "Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss-Poor Performance." :) I would love to have you as my instructor on my return to the UK (planned for about 5 years from now).
are you back??????????????
Brings back memories of my Mod 2 about a year ago. My instructor spoke to me exactly how you speak to your students. E.G. 'Personally i would have kept a bigger distance'. Good teaching style i must say.
Possibly the greatest instructor . top job mate
I have my mod2 on Monday, looking forward to it. Ive watched all of your video's and they have helped me massively in some areas. Thank you so much.
Passed my mod 2 today- these videos were extremely helpful, thanks a lot for putting them up!
@GabrielKnight666 Thanks for the nice feedback, In the UK all motorcycle instructors have to do the lessons on motorcycles. It's only the examiners who are allowed to use a car on test when their bike in being serviced etc. Happy riding. :-D
I enjoyed this video - thanks. There is a lot of really useful stuff in there. I have recently had a horrendous experience with an instructor who did nothing but tell me i would fail my test over the radio on a 1 hour ride. I noticed in your video that you did this once (signal on too long) and there were a couple of occasions where you sounded impatient - this brought back bad memories for me. So as an instructor, just be aware of the impact of every word you say, and how you say it - it really matters. Like your first pupil, I'd give you 8/10. Thanks for the vids.
Passed my mod 2 first time earlier today, smile has not left my face! Big thanks for the video's, definitely helped. Great quality aswell which helps :) cheers.
wow you are a really good instructor :)
i am 17 in december and moving on from my 50 to a 125 and i really hope i get someone like you because you really seem like you know what your doing. its too bad i live 140 miles away from nottinghamshire otherwise i would have called!
I started riding in august too. Had 12 hrs of riding in total before i took my mod 2. If you book with a training school, they sometimes block book so you might get a place. Its a bit more expensive but you get some extra training
you are one of the nicest people on youtube, and you actually know something!!!
Russ your videos are so knowledgeable, I am doing my roadrider tomorrow and mod1 training Sunday. Your videos are so helpful
Thanks for the feedback and all the best with your test. ☺
@@RoadcraftNottingham thank you much appreciated
This is absolutely brilliant, any rider can learn from video's like this, no matter how great of a rider they may think they are.. :-)
It's called a CBT ( compulsory basic training) and everyone in the UK who wants to ride a motorcycle had to do one.
I did my cbt back in 1999 & bought a new Italjet Dragster 125 I was only 19 and thought it was great! I rode it every day even when it snowed! But 12 months later it got stolen & I never replaced it & went back to cars instead. I'm 33 now and thinking of doing the direct access so I can get myself back on 2wheels & get a proper bike this time, you might even get a call from me in the near future Russ as I'm only up the road from you (micky1 jnc30) Great vids very entertaining keep em coming.
@AZZ3R1 Glad the gear change video helped, it helps a lot of people actually which is really nice. It works with a slipper clutch but not a quick shifter, as soon as I put pressure on the Tuono gear lever it just changes lol. I'm gonna do a clutchless change video soon with hints and tips too.
Great video. Been a rider for two and a half years and this was good to watch and think about the fundamentals. Plus I grew up in Bridgford so it was quite nostalgic!
Just had my cbt. Some parts are so much easier than expected then other parts are so much harder. Good fun though. Intensive 3 day course starts in 3 weeks so hopefully it works out.
Understood Russ, make perfect sense and I will start to incorporate it on the commute home tonight. Great Tip.
@mwinnful Unfortunately, I've seen so many instructors making very basic mistakes and missing things the pupil is doing wrong. When I was learning I thought they knew everything, now I see them through different eyes. Thanks for your comment.
Very nice camera setup. Audio is crystal clear.
I'd do both to also cover blind spots but make sure you're looking in front before actually moving.
I think before I would even think about teaching I should take some advance courses like Bikesafe, but the sponsoring is a great idea and makes it more of a realistic aim.
Thanks for replying to my comment.
Great video. I've been riding 31 years now, and picked up some good tips there. Thanks :)
Excellent Russ. I might ride in position two over the hump until I get the view.
I'm hopefully going to get my theory test done this year as my CBT is due renewal shortly. I'm EXTREMELY nervous about is (as of all things) so I'm really feeling rather comfortable watching your videos, it seems to calm things down a little and know it's not the end of the world if I don't pass. Just pick up and try again. Just a little thank you for posting these videos, their very helpful! Feel a little more confident about my bike test now.. :)
That's what I guess I was thinking but the way people were calling it sneaky confused me a little. Thanks for the videos Russ they're helping me and others ride safer 1 by 1 keep it up mate!
passed my CBT, theory and mod1 all in 2 weeks, i have never ridden or touched a motorcycle prior to that, i have my mod2 in two weeks time, hopefully all goes well.
your videos helped me to pass my CBT and I think there is some points that helped me with cat. B thanks man great videos!
You remind me of my car driving instructor... i wish i could choose you for my motorcycle lessons im planning to do once. You are great!
@RoadcraftNottingham The day you think you know everything is the day to hang up your lid. I do agree that you are an exellent instructor. Being for a ride with my instructor as a mate and it changed my mind about him teaching me the credlington, so i hope to see you in 29 months and 16 days lol (11.08.14). Ben relaxed just makes everything so much easier
I've got my CBT on Saturday with 2 Wheel Centre might pop up your way for mod 1&2 next year when I come of age
I have to agree. I did an assessment ride today with a well known riding school in London and all I got was negative feedback during the whole journey. I don't know, some people might respond better to that but when you are a grown up adult is a pill hard to swallow being treated like a naughty kid. Will watch your videos and find another instructor.
Excellent stuff, as always. I wish you taught me how to ride! I've been on two wheels for 4 years, and I still find these videos worth watching. :D
Just have to say, I love watching your videos. Never realized you were an instructor until today. That being said, you seem like an incredible instructor and it is a shame you do not live near me. Keep up with the great videos. :-)
Really appreciate these videos, the part where you talked about lookong down side roads if you are unsure of the speed limit is something I have never thought of. Proves you can teach an old dog new tricks! ;)
Good stuff, really helpful again. I'd love to learn with you up there, looks lovely.
Very impressive and knowledgeable facts. I'm myself going to ride a motorcycle in the future, so I find this helpful! Thanks mate
At the end of the road, when asked to turn right, the pupil should be right over to the right hand kerb. Was testing to see if they noticed the signs.
Intresting what you say about staying in middle of your lane for bends (as a learner) My instructor gets me on opposing sides to approching bends (which im fine with) but on one occasion i stayed left (ish) for a left bend as people were walking against traffic on other side of road , so i thought a vehicle may cut the bend to get around the people ! he asked what i was doing and then saw the hazard as he passed it ( i was in front out of 3 ) then he said well done.
This is the best biking lesson vid Ive seen! Brilliant!!!
@vAce2010 Yes, it's the A2 licence you're looking for. What you also need to look for is another school or instructor. Have a phone round and mention the problem you've had and another school will bend over backwards to look after you. All the best.
@JustChewitt The age 24 rule doesn't come in until next year. If you go onto the DSA gov uk website, it gives you all the info you need. Alternatively, call your local training school who will explain the full process to you. Cheers
Great insight into your world,I even picked up a couple of tips! thanks
@Roadcraftnottingham thank you very much for this helpful video I now feel more confident about taking my full test early next year, as I now know kinda what to expect :)
Great vid, really getting an insight into riding.
Were the pupils in this video experienced car drivers? Or newbies with little road experience?
I love your videos I find Im learning so much. Its great preparation for my CBT..
@Hondacb500Gijon We try to get pupils to use their rear brake for final stopping for better control. On the test, as long as they are in control, it won't affect the result.
a very important thing i learnt, on my cbt. make sure the instructor/examiner has a good clear radio. because hearing instructions clearly can help in knowing where to go and what to do next. when i did my cbt the instructor/examiner didnt have a clear radio it would cut out or break up at important places, for example " ok we are going make a ........... turn in about 200 yards " if your riding in front how do you know which direction he said? well its common sense really check your mirrors. by the way feel free to correct me if im wrong im still riding on my cbt so therefor im still a learner. but im soon doing my A2 license.
Hi. Great videos, every one has taught me something new, which is a big help as I've got my bike test starting next week! So nervous but also very excited! :) Just a quick question, what gloves are you wearing in this video? They look ideal! Thanks again. subbed
I'm just taking the bike license here in Denmark for level A. Here they expect us to know, and show that we can handle cutting the corners on bends etc
GAWD this takes me back to doing my full bike license, the training beforehand, was one of the best experiences ive had.
I still remember riding a CB500 thinking "FUCK this is powerful!",i'm not on a Gixxer K5 750,been on bikes for about 5 years now
It's good to see decent instruction being given for a change.
I'm pointing to the one way sign, basically letting the viewers know there's a one way street and the pupil should position far right at the end.
Really good work from the instructor. I could use a session with this guy - and I have had a full license isnce1987.
Great video as usual Russ. Quick question though, when pulling away at lights (straight on), do you just need to do mirror checks or full shoulder checks like the pupil in the video?
Take each situation on it's own merits. The speed at which we were going allowed us to read the road and if there's a problem, we can move. I'm always offset from the pupils so I can see what they're doing. If you can't see round a blinf corner, you're going too fast.
Glad to hear you got your full license! Ive gotten stuck in the law change so now have to wait till im 19 :(
I passed my test in London, which is where I do most of my riding. But in April I went on a tour around the country and found the lanes of devon and cornwall extremely challenging. Overall I struggled with the preparation for corners which could often be quite tight, with little warning. What sort of course would you recommend to give me more confidence on these roads? Or is it just about practice? I found myself smiling when arriving in busy town centres, feeling so 'at home'.
Great instructor.
Wish you was in london i would like to be trained by you...Great commentary...
Thank god I passed my test back in 1989! ...... Common sense and learning to ride safely should've always been part of the bike test, but I think he car test should also include the CBT, just so the newer drivers know how it is!!!!!!!!!
I like your teaching style, it seems very similar to my instructor... My Mod 2 next week.
@learn2rideVIDEOS True, it's a fine line blocking and forcing the car to be even more dangerous and inviting him to cut you up. I've allowed your response video, well recorded.
I liked your comment about the car trying to drag race the students instead of going left. Would never have thought of that.
When stopped at slow changing lights do you just hold the clutch in or shuffle your feet to get into Neutral? I shuffle at the moment but wondering if using my right foot is better.
Hi folk love your videos :) Question: can i get a Honda Forza 750 on a A2 licence? many thanks Ian
Very Good Video - Great Instruction. Unbelievable that the car jumped the red light. Absolutely stupid! I passed my test a couple of weeks back without instruction - but was always planning to get some advanced training afterwards. Would you say that advanced training differences a lot from the basic Mod 2 stuff?
Also, do you guys have a bike shop there or is that just your fleet of test cycles?
@monstermarkone Thanks for the feedback, glad the video helped you. :-)
Cant wait to get my first motorbike, stuck on my roadbike atm, still happy though.
@cfish3r I can't comment on particular situations. I recommend you call your local school and have a word with an instructor. All the best.
@montemini177 You still have to do A2 to lose the plates.
Nice Vids Mate, Got My Mod1 on the 28th of dec been cancelled twice due to weather not funny when i have to ride 40miles to the test centre in rain and wind lol.
Hopefully weather will be better, definately subsribing your tips are very helpful.
Thanks, Steve
@AZZ3R1 3rd gear on the Pan European will take me from almost standstill to 50mph easily so no worries there. I get the cocky ones too but soon knock it out of them lol.
How do you go about becoming an instructor? What sort of experience would you say you need?
It looks like it can be a really rewarding job.
HI Russ, with regards to "What are the lines telling you, a car is going to cut you up" - (0.57). Is that your take on how you should position yourself or is a guideline as included in the official CBT for example. It's a great pointer, thanks.
Interesting, nice driving and great instructions!
Thanks
Wish I could use you as an instructor but I live nowhere near. Just one question, I have a full driving license and I'm always riding bikes off road. How many lessons do you think I'd need to learn what I don't know? Such as shoulder checks etc. Thanks :)
@ZeTaEXiSTeNZ They both did DAS and passed first time. Two lots of advice, 1/ use a good or recommended instructor and don't just rely only on vids and 2/ On your test just think f**k it, you'll either do it this time or next but you WILL do it! The examiner is a biker too and isn't trying to catch you out. Let me know how you get on.
You need to have held a full motorcycle licence for three years. I'd advise you ask a local school to "sponser" you by training you and in return, you help out free of charge
Would the examiner not fail you for altering your road position when turning?
e.g. moving over to the left slightly for a sharpish right hand bend.
I thought you had to keep a dominant road position?
Anyway, thanks for uploading this, this is great practice for me before I actually start my lessons.
Russ, can you tell me the basic principles of road positioning when doing right and left turns and also right and left bends? Does the same apply? For example I'd be in position 1 when turning left, and 3 when turning right - not sure if the same applies to bends or not ?
Hi,
Out of interest what radios do you use for instructing? I have a few issues with the ones i use for my pupils, but the ones you are using remind me a bit of the ones used at Cardington for the CBT assessment.
Thanks,
Rob
@MarkieBhoy17 I can do training from complete novice up to Police style advanced training. Cheers
Think I'm gonna move to that place your school's at, good job there Mate. Your Tuono trips isnpired me to get a motorcycle. Couple of lens and some music and your pictures beat any top gear series, if you know whatta mean :)
well ya still have to take the CBT which does have a 3 hour road bit on it!
@freakygeek4369 Thanks. All the best with your test!
@AZZ3R1 Well, just done the vid today on the way back from the test centre on the pan 1100. Will be online later. Hope you like.
Out of interest, what would have been the best way for the rider to react to the blue van driving dangerously. Should they slow to let the van through or let the van overtake?
@cfish3r If you feel someone needs to know you're there and the examiner would actually be impressed with you if you do it right.
