Composing in 10 Minutes vs. 1 Hour vs. 1 Day

  • If you only had 10 minutes to compose orchestral music for a background image, how might you go about it? What if you had one hour? Or one day? How good would the music be in each case? How would the process be different? If you've ever wondered the answers to any of those questions, follow along as I attempt this challenge!
    This is my first long-form, (somewhat) instructional video. Would you like to see more of these? More of something else? Do you have constructive suggestions about how I can improve some aspect of my videos? Let me know in the comments!

    TH-cam recommended your vid to me. Very nice! Your “mischief” theme reminds me of Uranus “the magician” from Holst’s Planets. And the accompanying melodic theme reminds me of the “dies irae” motif. I’ve played cello for 15 years and minored in music but I still don’t know enough to compose close to this level. Very inspiring.

    • @EricGalluzzo
      @EricGalluzzo  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Yeah - I always hope I'm not ripping off anyone else's music off when I write - I constantly worry about that, and there's not a good way to verify. Maybe one day! 🙂 Happily I've had friends and acquaintances who have played most orchestral instruments over the years, so I've gathered a first-hand idea of how to write for most of them. But of course I'm still learning!

    As a novice musician aspiring to writing compositions of my own some day, I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of knowledge I have yet to learn, technique I have yet to master, and... ear I have yet to train? When I open up a DAW, I feel overwhelmed a lost. Seeing a peek behind the curtain like this is so reassuring. I can imagine myself doing this, in time. It doesn't seem quite so daunting, to an imaginary future version of me who can finally put notation to the sounds I hear in my head. Thank you for the lesson, and for helping to push back my anxieties for a little while!

      Sometimes a deadline can be a big motivator. I have taken part in Ryan Leach's "theme per day" challenge three times now - actually, there's another one starting today (which I won't have time to do) - and it really forces you to just write. Even if it's terrible, you have to get something out every day for a month, and if you have time, you can refine each day's music somewhat so it's not as bad.

    This is wonderful. I usually hate when the algorithm pretends to understand my taste, lol - even I don't understand my taste - but this is pretty spot on!
    edit: And if this turns into a regular thing, it will quickly become one of my favorite shows on TH-cam. Keep it up.

    I want to try this with a photo now!! Love that snippet of the _Dies Irae_ in your main theme (I think that's where it was)😂 15 minutes seems more reasonable, given that just setting up the score ate 10% of your original time limit. It would be great to see more of your manuscript time, even if it's just a silent sped-up view over the page showing when you write and when you're thinking! (I know editing down footage with audio could be a lot of effort.) Or maybe a secondary channel with full video where we're just watching you work? I love me a zen stream 😊

    You are incredible! You've earned yourself a sub, though you deserve plenty more. As a beginner, are there any sources you would recommend to get started in learning composition/orchestration like that? Cheers!

    • @EricGalluzzo
      @EricGalluzzo  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I may do an entire video on this, actually! But a short answer is: you need to learn tonal harmony and counterpoint, then orchestration, and especially you need to listen to lots and lots of different types of music, and preferably learn to analyze scores. And write music, lots and lots of it. It takes a while, but it's worth it!
      Some of my favorite online resources include the TH-cam channels from Alan Belkin, Ryan Leach, Orchestration Online, David Bruce, and Nahre Sol. (I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of them as well...) Alan Belkin has a great "letter to beginners" on his website.

    So if I were to do this image for composition
    I’d do
    Low reeds with maybe a bass trombone or tuba to accompany the lower hard to reach notes for mischief
    high woodwinds/high strings for running
    then the rest to just assist with the ambiance.
    really cool video
    Your really relaxed and chill style when narrating and sharing ideas is appreciated, you don’t fake anything about yourself.

    • @EricGalluzzo
      @EricGalluzzo  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Yeah, I had the bassoons (low reeds) playing quite a bit, but they only actually got the melody for two bars. The rest of the time they were on accompaniment. But I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity in hindsight, as the bassoons are perfect for that mischievous feeling. Stay tuned, I may possibly have an upcoming video in a couple weeks that describes some examples of how to transform a theme into different emotions, and one of them involves bassoons. :)

      @@EricGalluzzo the bassoon is one of those instruments that a lot of people forget about in an orchestra, even tho in pieces like dvorak 8 or prokofviev dance of the nights.
      The bassoon is a very dominant instrument in laying down the counter melodies or accompaniment.

    The trick to writing a score in 10 minutes is to make it only a few measures. 10 measures, a minute a measure for writing and editing for example. That bit of advice is free, you’re welcome 😉😬

      I'm not sure what background you have, but generally studying harmony and counterpoint is a must, and then orchestration and form. And of course, it requires lots and lots of practice! I might do a video about this at some point, since I've had a number of people ask! You might check out Alan Belkin's "letter to a young composer" on his website.
