  • www.autobytel.com/volkswagen/g... Electric cars aren't for everyone, and Autobytel's Joni Gray can tell you because she owns one. Joni has been enjoying her Nissan Leaf for almost three years now and back when she bought her battery electric vehicle, the Leaf was one of the only choices around. Today electric cars have proven to be more than a fad, as there are almost a dozen options that are now out there.
    Two of these modern more affordable zero emission all electric choices include the FIAT 500e and VW e-Golf. The 2015 FIAT 500e sells for $32,300 and has an 87 Mile Range and gets an average 122 MPGe. The 500e is fun to drive thanks to a 111 HP and 147 lb-ft of torque thanks to an 83 kW Electric Motor and 24 kW Lithium Ion Battery and a 2,980 lbs. Curb Weight. The FIAT 500e comes with 7 Airbags standard and is available with deals like $2,000 Cash Allowance and a $199 per month Lease for 36 mo. with only $999 down and a California Clean Access Sticker availability.
    The 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf ushers in the all new MKVII 7th generation Golf platform with an all-electric power train. The battery powered VW starts at $35,445 and has an 83 Mile Range and gets an average 116 MPGe thanks to a 115 HP and 199 lb-ft of torque 85kW Electric Motor and 24.2 kW Liquid Cooled Battery and a 3,090 lbs. Curb Weight. The e-Golf gets a trick set of driving modes: Normal, Eco and Eco+ which limit the current coming from the battery and help to conserve the e-Golf's range. When juice runs out the e-Golf can regain an 80% Fast Charge in only 30 minutes while it takes 4 hours to charge the battery 100% on a 240V outlet.

    Nice to see an EV review from a fellow EV owner. A lot of "regular" reviewers focus on the wrong things...

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But some of her objections seem uninformed. Anyone who drives and EV quickly learns how easy it is to charge overnight at home and start the day with a "full tank." It's really easy to not run out of charge, and most EVs, even a Leaf, have more than enough range for most daily driving.

      it's actually way better in person, and in White. Those C shaped DLRs are a real head turner in traffic and it's actually pretty fun, torque at any point in the speed range gives you a firm push into the seat :)

      Anyone know the predicted reliability of these cars? VW and electrical problems have been historically poor.

      Enjoy! E-Golf is a really good car! VW did just about everything right on E-Golf. It's well-designed, well-engineered, and a lot of fun to drive.

    The 500e does also have regenerative braking.

  • @ChrisBaccus

    I have the 500e. You can remove the Tom Tom nav and put it in the glovebox. Since I rarely need navigation, it's a good solution to what I too agree is an awkward spot for it. Also I really wanted the e-Golf. It was the best driving experience than all the EVs I tried but the price on the $87/mo fiat lease in March made the fiat the better choice.

      e-Golf drives very nicely. It feels very similar to a fossil fuel Golf, but with smooth and instant torque.

      Usually, you put about $2500 down (the amount of the California clean air rebate). Right now (Aug. '16), the local Fiat dealer is doing a $65/mo. lease, at 10K miles per year. It's slightly more for a 12K per year.

    I'm surprised that she totally glossed over the fact that the Fiat 500e is quick and very fun to drive. The VW e-Golf has leisurely, Prius-like acceleration. However, it's a larger, more practical vehicle with better laid out controls.

    This may be a dumb question, but I was wondering: for a fully electric car, is it bad for the battery to charge it more often than when the battery is almost completely depleted? Like say charging after 1/4 or 1/2 of the battery is used so that if something happens and you need 3/4 or 1/2 of the full range you don't have to worry?

    • @TecnamTwin
      @TecnamTwin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lithium ion batteries don't care about partial cycling. Heat and extended times at low capacity are what degrade the battery more. It's best to keep the battery topped up all the time, and it's more convenient.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With Lithium Ion and Nickel metal Hydride batteries, it's better to discharge and charge them shallowly and more often. They last longer that way. So it's much better to charge before they get fully depleted. Many people charge at home at night and have a "full tank" in the morning. It's very convenient, and much easier than going to the gas station. Quick answer: yes, recharge before it gets low.

    I am looking at the Nissan electric cars. When one can get more than 105 miles in range driving at 70 miles per hour on a 100% charge with use of air conditioning I may likely make my shift. I am hoping for a gasoline range extender being put into a Nissan electric car. I would like to get over 90 miles to the gallon in the first 90 miles of range.
    I will likely keep my gasoline car for use in trips longer than 100 miles in range.

      Many people get an EV as a second car. But their first car, usually an ICE, ends up getting almost no use, because the EV handles almost all daily driving just fine. Even a Leaf. Most Americans drive less than 20 miles from home each day. Fact.

    id rather have a few less mpge and have regular rims and a regular looking bumper with a block plate behind the openings than the ugly electric designs they come out with. if your worried about mpg so bad make the roof solar panels, make the one person wide and 3 back like the elio to reduce drag. there some many ways to increase mpg but it seems they through electric drives in gas cars and go how do we make it uglier so nobody buys these.

    Side note, the Leaf has about the worst battery degradation of any electric car. They are absolute junk after the first year or two, and are not worthy to compare anything to...

    Your video is wrong, I own a 2015 E gulf, and I get 117-127 on a full range after charging. and because it has recouperation mode, I can drive it in city, and get much more range because stopping and going charges the battery. This is a fact, I have one ;) However, its listed as 112 or 114, so either way your wrong thank you

      Sorry, hypermilers, you can't just throw out your stats on miles. You have to use the EPA numbers. Otherwise, there is nothing that suggests we should believe outrageous claims for range. NOW, the new 2017 eGolf (that's how you spell it), will be on sale later in 2016 and it may get around 186 miles of range (EPA). But you can't buy it yet.

    The Fiat is light? Are pounds different where you are or what? 2,900 pounds for a car that small is heavy, it's really heavy.
    The MINI Cooper S is 300 pounds lighter and it's actually quite a bit bigger. The regular Cooper is even lighter.
    That's the main problem with electric cars other than poor performance, low range, and difficulties finding places to charge: the batteries weigh so much that a lot of the efficiency is lost just dragging them around. And they're not like gasoline cars where once you use the gas the car is lighter, they're always dragging around dead weight.

    • @amitdas91
      @amitdas91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I drive a FIAT 500E, I can assure you that the performance is not poor.
      In fact, I cannot go back to driving a gas vehicle again.
      The instanaeous torque that a EV provides adds a huge degree of confidence while driving.
      For instance, taking a quick left turn; its takes 1-second for a gas car to just get going, in the same time the 500E has completed the turn.
      While heavy for such a small car, the center of gravity and weight distribution in the 500E is better than the gas 500 or even the Mini.
      you: "And they're not like gasoline cars where once you use the gas the car is lighter, they're always dragging around dead weight. "
      LOL, isn't the internal combustion engine itself a lump of dead weight
      BTW, the FIAT's claimed range is conversative, I routinely get 90+ miles while driving a normal speeds.

    • @K31TH3R
      @K31TH3R 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amit Das While I'm glad you're enjoying your electric car, smugly proclaiming an internal combustion engine a lump of dead weight is pretty shallow considering their reciprocating mass adds to the handling characteristics of the car while batteries are just that.... dead weight. Also, try driving a turbodiesel if you want real torque. :)

    • @amitdas91
      @amitdas91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      K31TH3R >>reciprocating mass adds to the handling characteristics of the car
      -haha, unfortunaetly the mass of ICEs cannot be placed as low nor distributed as evenly as batteries
      >>Also, try driving a turbodiesel if you want real torque.
      not even close, there are NO ICEd vehicles in the world that can deliver torque as fast as a EV.
      100% of torque is devlivered at ZERO RPM in an EV

    • @K31TH3R
      @K31TH3R 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amit Das Tell that to the engineers behind the Porsche's rear mounted flat 6, or to Chevrolet's engineers that gave the Corvette a 50:50 weight distribution. That reciprocating mass adds a gyroscopic effect to add stability at speed without additional downforce needed in an EV as well.
      And no, you don't get a linear torque curve from 0RPM from a turbo diesel, but you also can't get horsepower from an EV, something you drastically want for when trying to get a heavy car up to speed.
      Hybrids are the only EV's that make sense right now, pure EV's are too ahead of their battery technology, indicated by their ridiculous charge times and travel distances. The first company that develops a successful hub motor and super capacitor KRS type system for FWD vehicles will render the current gen pure EV impractical and overpriced.

    • @amitdas91
      @amitdas91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      K31TH3R Why do you cite a porsche or corvette, why not compare a gas FIAT 500 to a 500e. You ready, 63/37 vs 53/47 and the center of gravity was obviouly lowered. The difference is huge, so much so that the gas vs the EV drive totally different. This is even more significant considering the 500 is a "tall and short" body style.
      >>And no, you don't get a linear torque curve from 0RPM from a turbo diesel, but you also can't get horsepower from an EV
      -- please, don't argue about torque when discussing EV, you will ALWAYS lose
      ok, it's true that electric motors in EVs are designed more for torque than HP but thats exactly what driving LEGALLY on public roads requires. EVs with a top speed of 110 MPH are good enough for 99% of the drivers. btw, the Tesla Model S D has a top speed of 155 and 0-60 of 3.2
      >>Hybrids are the only EV's that make sense right now, pure EV's are too ahead of their battery technology, indicated by their ridiculous charge times and travel distances.
      --not true, the 500e charges from 0% to 100% in 3.5hrs.. a full charge is 90 mile range.
      Other EVs charge much faster
      have
