    As always, an excellent review. I'd love to see a future review and comparison to the DIESEL Golf, for those of us in need of a highway optimized Golf (vs this city focused vehicle). Diesel car reviews are hard to come by. Thanks!

    Always a big fan of reviews, Alex!
    Please note: on the MKVII Golfs (2015+ Golf, GTI, R, eGolf) that the cargo load floor can be lowered or (as you note) removed, and the fixed tonneau cover is designed to it below the movable load floor.

    Nice and thorough, as always with your reviews. One correction on the Leaf. You can get the 6.6kW charger on the base model, but it is an option. The cost pushes it so close to the SV trim that there is little reason to go with the S with the more powerful charger.
    Hopefully the passive cooling of the Golf EV's battery is more resilient that the pre 2013 Leaf batteries.

    Awesome review Alex!
    I got my FIAT 500e after watching your review, it's been slightly over 1-year and 13k+ miles on the 500e.
    Let's just say I'm not going back to ICE cars again :)
    FYI, driving at posted speed limits (max 65mph), I get around 95 miles range.
    Suggestion: When reviewing EVs a rough calculation of TCO (total cost of ownership) would be very helpful.
    I'm saying this because maintenance costs are practically zero for my 500e.
    One more thing, sometimes you say "awfully lot" in a positive connotation: "the trunk has an awfully lot amount of space", I think you should reserve that statement for negative stuff... just a suggestion.
    I expect you to have 1M+ subs soon, just don't punch your producer, like that other auto journalist...whats his name

    Alex, you forgot to mention that the Soul EV drives like a refrigerator (compared to e-Golf)! Also, the 2016 e-Golf SE has heated cloth seats but only 3.2 kW and _no DC charging standard ($1.6k option) -- not a problem if you charge overnight as we do. This makes the lease much lower too, at $159/mo over 36 months with 2300 down (if you can buy it: it's not available in all states (right now only at participating dealers in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington D.C. -- that's a shame).

    Good review as always thanks.
    I think the feature to allow easily controlling the amount of regenerative braking is a temporary requirement for drivers of gas cars as they transition to electric. Once you get use to the strength of the regenerative braking, it becomes easy to drive the car almost completely with the accel pedal and the maximum setting should be fine.
    The issue then becomes whether the brake lights come on (they should) but that's a relatively straightforward technical issue for the manufacturer I suspect.
    I should say I have not driven this car but I have driven the Tesla Model S.

    You forgot to mention that in comparison with every other EV you can drive safely with heater off in cold weather. This is because electric wind-shield defrost/demist keeps it perfect even if you drive 50 miles. All other EV-s get foggy windows if you try not to use heater.

    When is Florida going to get it? @115hp not sure I'd be interested yet. Anything exciting happening with the batteries in 2016 or 2017? Does it have a sleep mode? Would be great if you could run just the A/C over night in idle .. and wonder how much battery that would consume?

    nice review, I've owned an e-golf since it's launch in Nov last year. and I LOVE it. I have to take note with the 0-60 time though. I've clocked mine at 8.9 sec in Normal mode, not the 10.2 VW had posted. (must have been in eco mode?) Anyway, it will certainly beat a GTI off the line up to 40mph because of the instant torque and the lack of a transmission. I've also been able to spruce it up to look more attractive like a GTI, because it's a golf, so most GTI parts fit. As far as the additional info, you need to have the VW Car-Net App on your phone to find out the charge time info, you can send it addresses, lock the doors, program charge times and set charge location settings etc, it's not the best app, but it's a must for the e-golf driver. Over-all I've found the e-golf be just as fun as my R32, in a different way of course! And WAY cheaper to have fun in, especially with premium gas at $4 a gallon.

    Awesome review, Alex. Quick question, how solid did that hatch lever feel? I don't know enough about them, but do you think it can stand the test of time? I ask because it also moves in "R" to reveal the back-up camera, so to me, it's gonna do a lot of moving and adding the fact that it'll have pressure on it to lift the hatch, seems like a recipe for expensive repair(s)

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      stupid8911 I'm sure it is likely to fail before a simple hatch mechanism but it did feel fine and I haven't really heard of any issues.

    Nice review. He did spend quite a bit of time talking about the regenerative braking and it makes me wonder if either he just doesn't have enough time behind the wheel of EV's or if Tesla actually has some kind of patent on the way they modulate their braking.
    Why select between regen modes/aggressiveness when all you should have to do is lift the pedal but not fully remove your foot?
    In the Tesla, the only vehicle I have personal experience with, the regenerative braking is modulated. No need to make any selection, you simply apply more or less braking by lifting your foot off the accelerator pedal more or less.
    Rapidly lifting your foot sends it to full braking in anticipation of a full stop and also preps the system for emergency braking.
    Hopefully all EV makers adopt this instead of having the driver have to flip all kinds of buttons and levers to simply get it to do something it should instinctively do as part of it's throttle input.

    I'm not sure why you say the "Audi-like" quality has returned. The Golf MK6 had pretty much the same interior quality, it's the Jetta that went to cheap plastics.

  • @nobodyyouknow222
    @nobodyyouknow222 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok alan.. very comprehensive... and accurate on the details. So this is NOT a fluff review ! That said, do the math on 6.6 vs 7.2 kw.. that's only 600 watts/hour more charging. Over 4 hours.. 2.4 hw hours... barely 10%. what is 10% of 4 hours.. 24 minutes.. IF you are charging a totally discharged battery. Smart EV'ers know you don't want to be doing that... so more likely this makes a 10 minute difference. Probably not all that significant. Also.. in my opinion.. those 30 minute super charges will do more to shorten your battery life than anything.. especially if your battery is hot already. So... while the connector maybe isn't optimum for US today.. you "bettah off" not using it anyhow.. or using it sparingly. Good review. Will the Kia have the long term reliability of the VW. Time will tell. Can you find a kia dealer in the sticks or Midwest/south ? Better Find out.

      Yes , so I would give a full charge and see where you at after the hills, might take half battery to go 25 miles over hills but you would make it, although when your driving it might not seem like it, go 50 to 60 over the hill areas and use Regen if your coasting speed is higher then your speed, i live in CALI and travel from San Fran to Sacramento alot in this egolf,I have both 2015 sell and 2016 se

  • @bobysze
    @bobysze 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You got the weight thing wrong it is 3090 eGolf and 2635 i3. Not that it really changes anything, it is still lighter than the Leaf or the Focus.

    • @timschmidt8984
      @timschmidt8984 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bobysze VW USA claims a 3390 lbs curbweight for the golf vs 2635 for the I3. The range extended I3 is around 3000 lbs, but I would argue that that is a different class of vehicle.

    • @bobysze
      @bobysze 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why even bother with the power tilt only seat? It seems like extra electric draw that provides no additional benefit. Just go full power or full manual...

    • @benji888578
      @benji888578 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      personally, this is good, manual tilt usually has to fit into notches, I prefer the continuous adjustment of power tilt. ...And, power seats are not adjusted all the time, it's not the electric draw that's an issue, it's the added weight of power seats that could reduce efficiency/range of the car.

      Nissan has not given any firm dates nor details on new leaf/bigger battery.

      @benji888578 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, it's relatively boring, but, at least it has a nice looking front end...too many cars over the last decade have big, fugly grilles...especially this year...some are fairly nice looking until you see the grille, and it goes all fugly, just awful.

    • @King_Kenny66
      @King_Kenny66 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      benji888578 For sure, love the Golf, even will consider one next car purchase. I just meant electric cars, save Tesla are boring because they're slow.

    • @benji888578
      @benji888578 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh, yeah, what was I thinking? I'm used to 0-60 of 7-8 secs and forgot about the 10-11 secs for the e-Golf and the Kia Soul EV. These two are the first EVs I could actually see myself in. (Not a fan of sedans, don't like the looks of the Leaf, the others...Fiat 500e looks fun, but too small, and just don't care for the rest.) I don't have to have the fastest car, but, I do prefer some performance, especially w/cornering. ...so, I'm back to the idea of electric conversion...until we get a more sporty EV under $40K. Or a CUV EV would be nice.

    • @sketchpro12
      @sketchpro12 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      benji888578 I have an e-golf and I gotta say that the 0-60 is NOT 10.2! I've measured mine many times at 8.9 in normal mode, it's also feels way faster than that. Makes my R32 feel sluggish off the line. And I've not had any problems getting around people on a pinch. Great solid car and you can dress it up like a GTI since it's a Golf. Just have to be careful not to hurt the efficiency with wider wheels etc...

    • @benji888578
      @benji888578 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nice to hear from an owner, it's still in my radar, especially with your comments. I will admit, back in Jan. '04, I looked at (but did not drive) a GTI, I ended up getting a new '03 Civic Si (the last one). ...(I now drive an Acura RSX and would like to eventually convert it.) (sorry for the late response, just going through some old emails...I get too many.)
