  • 2016 Fiat 500e Review. If you are in the market to buy a used city driving EV , the Fiat 500e may be an option for you. The 2016 has a combined city/highway of 112 MPGe and an EPA of 84 miles. It charges using the J-connector and can only charge using level 1 and level 2 chargers. I take the car out for a drive and see how easy it is to park.

    I bought my baby girl (a Black Fiat 500e) 2015 for $5k and 33miles. My dream car has been a Fiat 500e actually. I love how Fiats always looked and I always wanted an electric car rather than gas. I am 5’8 and fit perfectly. The fiat is pretty spacious for the driver and the passenger, I don’t use the back seats to carry anybody but some stuffed animals. Mostly it’s just me or me and my fiancé in the weekend. Lack of mileage is for sure a turn off especially because my college is 30 mins (highway) away from my house, so my car does get low pretty easily and my college only has a few EV chargers but for me, I take this as a learning curve. My dream has always been this car and I rather deal with this then to have it another way. My car doesn’t squeal when I go 0-50, but she does go pretty quick. My fiancé’s car is a Nissan Versa and even his car accerlates slower than my baby girl. I love my Fiat 500e !!!! Thankfully she’s my first car but I’m sure folks who transition from gas to electric will always “struggle” initially with finding charging stations around, mileage, etc but i think it’s worth it. Baby girl is supper safe I would say! She doesn’t move too much when there wind, smooth ride and smooth turns, doesn’t move when she’s driving near those huge shipping trucks. And this is probably because of the regenerative braking or maybe not, but she brakes sooo smoothly. But yes Fiat 500e are good commuter cars especially if ur are single or a couple. Definitely not very family friendly or even a car to drive with ur friends around. But a good monday-Friday car for people interested!

    Love my Fiat 500e, Easy to drive, easy to park, easy to charge. A lot of people think it's a gasoline car.
    Beat many gasoline cars and they looked shocked that this little car beat them. Love that it's stealth that way. :)

    I have had a 2013 model for 2,5 years and I must say that it's my alltime favorite car. It's small and zippy just as you describe it and it is so sexy and nimble that I don't actually think anything out there compares. I live in a very cold country so range can be a problem in the wintertime but even though it handles cold weather very poorly in terms of range it gives more than enough back when the summer comes and the sunroof opens up and the zippyness and the tiresqueeling (caused by the completely overpowered engine) creates california wherever you are. I give it a 11 out of 10 and would seriously recommend it to anyone that don't really need range. Hands down the best investment when it comes to bang for your bucks on small, compact EV for commuting and/or joyriding. The best car purchase of my life.

    I want one! What's kept me from getting one is that the residual value of my 2012 Volvo S60 is quite low and this 2017 Fiat 500e is still a novelty in Costa Rica, my country of birth, and has kept its value rather well!

    I really like the Fiat 500e. It gets a lot of flak for being a compliance car, but has been one of the few used EVs one could consistently buy for under $10,000 for a couple of years now. It would be ideal for my daily commute and is definitely on my list. :-)

    Excellent video and overview! This is my exact car - a 2016 Fiat 500e, and even the same color. This car is awesome. You hit on a lot of good points about it. One thing, when you take your foot off accelerator, just wanted to mention that it actually does engage gentle regenerative braking - but only up to 5Kwh but still helpful. The car is super cute, and so are you by the way :)

    Got my 2017 a little over year ago for $8300 out the door with 32k miles on it. My commute is exactly 25 miles each way and I can charge at my workplace for 1$ a day. It's cheaper to charge at work than my home, so I do a full round trip home and recharge at work. I work a 4 day on 4 day off schedule....just commuting to work (not including errands and weekend driving), this car will pay itself off in just what I'll be saving in gas in under 3 years of ownership....factoring in Living in the bay area gas prices.

      Have zero regrets owning this car. Aside from the savings, it is an absolute blast to drive! PS- you can remove the storage tray in the trunk floor which unlocks a significant amount more of space.

      Just got my 2017 a month ago and yeah, Los Angeles area gas prices are in the $5-$7 range. Ridiculous when most of my driving is less that 2miles with a possible 20-mile jaunt to work every now and then. This lil pocket rocket is a blast

    Nice review!
    The good thing is that it’s not a “Fix It Again, Tony” car because of the Bosch, water cooled battery.
    The stock wheels and tires suck and are in my storage shed. I have a 2017 and changed to 17 X 7 Sparco wheels (Abarth weight) and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. The suspension is pretty stiff to support the battery weight so inadvertently it becomes great fun to drive. Lost about 7% range (probably driving like a nut doesn’t help because it is so fun) but worth it. People in expensive cars get really mad when you hook up and kick the crap out of them at stop lights in a FIAT.

Hopefully, I pay for it tomorrow, but I have to pay $1200 to ship it from PA from California. There is a $4000 Federal Tax Credit for used electric cars these days, but I can't use, because of retirement.

    Nice review. One minor comment is in the US there is no such thing as Level 3 charging, it's L1, L2, and DCFC. In Europe, some people have a three phase AC plug which charges fairly fast around 20kw but not quite DCFC speed.

    • @barrywakefield504
      @barrywakefield504 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There has been substantial discussions on battery degradation on these fiats, and the engineering team did an excellent job on preserving the battery life on these. The battery loss on the earliest year (2013) have been negligible. One of the upsides to not having a "fast charging" set up is it reduces a lot of stress that gets placed on the battery charging cycle. A standard L2 charger can charge these in about 4 hours from zero, which has been plenty fast for 99.8% of my time of ownership

    The 500e is not available new in the US. The best-selling EV in Europe, the Volkswagen 1d3, is not available in the US. The 2nd best-selling EV in Europe, the Renault Zoe, is not available in the US. Volkswagen eUp and electric Golf, Peugeot 208 electric, not available new in the US. Overall I think about 6 of the European top 10-selling EV's are not for sale in the US, plus many other EV's just below the top 10. Detroit execs say that Americans only want SUV's. Is that true, or are SUV's pretty much the only option we're being given, because the profit per vehicle is much higher on an SUV than a city car?

    I test drove one of these and an eGolf after driving a Bolt, I was not impressed by either and ended up going with the Bolt.
    If I had tried the Fiat first I probably would've been more impressed with its power, but after the Bolt it was kinda meh. It reminded me of my first car: a 1986 Subaru GL hatchback*, tiny and underpowered. But the Fiat doesn't even have 4wd. The eGolf was slightly better than the Fiat, you could at least put adults in the back of it. The Fiat was ~$7k and the eGolf was ~$10k.
    Eventually it was that ~80 mile range that really killed it for me. If it's a second car then you can get away with that little, but it would've been my only car so I couldn't.
    I ended up getting a 2017 Bolt Premier for $16k from a private seller. I've loved it so far.
    *With that hi/lo 4wd it was an absolute demon in the snow, I loved that car and rode it hard till the transmission fell out of it. If/when Subaru makes an EV that isn't a giant crossover or similar I will certainly be looking hard at it. Something like a WRX, Impreza or smaller would be neat.

    • @barryw9473
      @barryw9473 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not believe it translates as you don’t put gasoline in an EV. The EPA needs to stop using it, too. If you know the battery size (kWh) then miles/kWh or km/ kWh makes much more sense.

    • @Jcewazhere
      @Jcewazhere 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer miles per kWh, at least now that I've driven my Bolt for a few months and understand it. For someone that's new to EVs even though it's a rough estimate MPGE is useful to compare with ICE cars.
      I can brag that coming home from the mountains I got about 250 miles per gallon in a car that goes 0-60 in about six seconds and that makes people want to at least check out EVs. If instead I told them that I got 7 miles per kilowatt hour and that I can regenerate at 50kW while coasting down the mountain most of them would just smile and nod as their eyes glazed over.
