- In 1953, a group of economists got together to create the Gross Domestic Product: a way to measure everything that involves a market transaction. But GDP doesn't measure the single biggest contributor to almost every nation's economy-the unpaid labour performed every day in homes, in families, and by volunteers-and it doesn't account for the cost of externalities like the environment. In this funny, engaging and enlightening talk, noted economist Dr Marilyn Waring makes a compelling and accessible argument for finding a better way to measure what counts.
Dr Marilyn Waring is a prominent New Zealand economist and feminist, and a leading activist for human rights.
At 23 years old, Marilyn was one of the youngest New Zealanders ever elected to Parliament. She pushed to have marital rape criminalised and threatened to cross the floor to vote with Labour on a nuclear-free New Zealand, precipitating the 1984 snap election.
On leaving Parliament, Marilyn earned a PhD in Political Economy; her research has been influential in establishing the field of feminist economics. She argues for the economic importance of women’s unpaid work and the environment, revealing the serious policy consequences caused by ignoring these when calculating national economic measures such as GDP.
More recently, Marilyn’s work has focused on the inequities of globalisation and the importance of acknowledging women’s work as an international human rights issue. She has undertaken a range of projects dealing with these issues for the United Nations. GDP is a post-WW2 metric that represents maintaining American hegemony during the transition from wartime industrial production to the growth-model capital finance emphasis of the Marshall Plan. It is also an incremental step away from the FDR New Deal social contract, towards the market fundamentalism of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism of course, infamously determines the price of everything, while understanding the value of nothing.

Work you do on yourself (exercise, reading, meditating) are not a part of the economy though they may directly lead to economic benefits. Likewise, work done for and within the family unit does not count. Families are and ought to be interdependent enough that the work is akin to work on the self.
This should not be problematic. I spend hours each week learning music and whenever I accomplish something I'm proud of people ask the save question. "what did you get paid for that?"
Things like reading to your children, diy and art projects, and even maintaining a good lawn are things better valued outside of an economic frame. Bringing them in to econ actually devalues them and puts them alongside the drug dealers and smugglers she addresses at the top.

No, what you need to do is not brush your teeth so that you develop cavities and must spend a lot of money at the dentist. Therefore generating exchanges between you, the dentist office, dental insurance providers, dental supply distributors and manufacturers, and water utilities. Just to name a few.

I volunteer at an organization in my hometown in Puerto Rico who is managing a community art gallery, a cabaret style theater where we also do forums, a second hand store, a community garden, a risk reduction program for addicts and street workers, and a community kitchen. Our volunteers don't get paid. We have no employees because we can't afford them. We are living in Puerto Rico post Maria. Our contribution value in a yearly basis is almost a million dollars, calculating the hours worked for free by our volunteers and the goods donations we receive for the community. The municipal government does not recognize that contribution. The state government is looking to sell off what we have, our assets, risking our future and our environment thinking this is the best way to develop the community. Yes, we need to start thinking different on the concept of real value, and elect people to represent us that understand this.

So... If we refuse to add za zings we really care about to zis cold uncaring economic accounting scheme, how do we expect to ever get zeir value recognized on a Macroeconomic scale? Rail against za current model all you like, but unless you present a alternate working model, we can't compare and zeir merits so we can't change za system to a non-existant model.
This is za 21st Century, like it or not we using data and science to try to make better decisions... We say we want za value of unpaid work and za environment to be valued, but then say we don't want zese numbers to be calculated in zis so terrible uncaring analytical system. Historically, we have ruled by zese emotion pleas, but so does za ozzer side. And every generation we swap who is in charge, and it is more often retro-conservatives (and usually males) zan progressives because zey have numbers zat zey can point to to say "look we aren't being emotional, we have data zat show our way is better!". Zey say zey are rational and objective because zey have rationalized zeir emotional values wiff numbers. @@joeldwest that's one of the many reasons I like Andrew Yang. His freedom dividend will give that to stay at home parents and people who care for their family members. Alot of his policies are geared towards shifting away from GDP as the only measurement of economic success. By informing its measurements with what he calls the American score card which would measure things like family health and wellbeing, financial liquidity and mental health. Aswell as the health and wellbeing of our planet. Which is also vastly important, but not something most US citizens can't even think of because of lack of financial stability. i know this first hand, while I cared about the environment and understood how important making it better was, but not knowing if I could pay for my own life and bills, the planet's wellbeing is a distant idea that I didnt have time or mental capacity for. I was able to get out of this, but there are still so many who can't or are unable to. So, I appreciate that he understands that to really tackle the bigger picture problems, solutions that tackle the problems that individuals and families face must be tackled first. Sorry for the length, I'm really passionate about what Yang will bring to the table.

When they compute the components of GDP, they don’t make “estimates” on the productivity of illegal activities. In fact they don’t make “estimates” on anything they can’t quantify.

You're looking at it backwards. We should not be looking to ensure people work long hours and are productive. A good sign of economic growth would be working shorter hours, both unpaid and paid. Therefore skilled people would reflect better on the model than unskilled, and should be what we strive towards.
I do still think that time consumption should not be the only metric however, as it doesn't consolidate all of our economic goals into one model, only a few.
Massage face and all to remain youthful and it also cleans your lymph nodes keeping you healthy, home and cars filters changed frequently is important too,

A very myopic take on econ, considering only the Keynesian neo-classical methods. Dr. Waring is making moral judgements, not discussing econ. She should read Mises, concerning a value free theory of econ and then revisit this discussion.

So given what most people believe is "science", and the nature of knowledge/epistemology, even science is “pseudoscientific”.
