The Technology of Better Humans | Chris Messina | TEDxBend

  • Chris Messina spent 15 years immersed in the culture and tech companies of Silicon Valley. Among other popular creations, his best known contribution to social media is the ubiquitous hashtag. In this talk, Messina reflects on the unprecedented adoption of social technology and ponders a future similarly transformed by artificial intelligence. Drawing in his observations about the impact of the hashtag, he suggests that we can promote long-term, positive cultural change not by focusing so much on technology, but on the mental fitness and emotional wellness of the people making technology. Then, as they design human-friendly features into their technology products and those products become massively adopted, their users may become better connected to themselves and to others. "Chris Messina has spent over 15 years living on the edge of social technology. He has designed products and experiences for Google and Uber, founded startups, and changed the world by giving away many of his creations, including the hashtag. His skillset is broad, anchored in product and user experience design. He lead developer experience at Uber and co-founded Molly (YC W’18), a conversational social AI.
    Chris has created movements online and off, and acted as catalyst for change in large and small organizations. In 2004, he helped organize the grassroots movement that propelled Mozilla Firefox to its first 100 million downloads. In 2005, he co-organized the first BarCamp and then popularized the unconference event model to over 350 cities around the world. In 2006, he opened the first coworking spaces in the world, giving rise to a global movement. Then in 2007, he championed the idea of the hashtag, eventually changing social media forever and galvanizing popular social revolutions.
    He has spoken at conferences like TEDx, SXSW, Google I/O, and Microsoft’s Future Decoded, and is frequently quoted in media outlets like The New York Times, Business Week, LA Times, Washington Post, and Wired." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Refreshing approach to humanizing technology in a system that currently desensitizes social compassion. We are all culpable in the general lack of empathy for our fellow beings.

    Social media, far from connecting people, seems to be driving wedges between groups in society, entrenching ideas that lack validity and polarising society. We need to learn that all ideas are not equal and that encouraging the expression of ideas that have no basis in fact, do nothing to advance humanity.

    Young genius inventors become wise as they grow older and they realise what they did not know when they were youthful.
    Too bad that their decision when young have permanently reshaped, impacted, even limited modern society.
    And since learning to what extent social media companies go to retain the user's attention indefinitely I am somewhat skeptical about the accuracy of this man's description of how social media works.
    Social media is not interested in the quality of your interaction with your fellow humans, they actually want to be the focus of your continued attention so that they can part you from your money.
    Don't engage with them, lead a richer life.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is *not* a giveaway. We and more so all of our ancestors collectively have created a world where robotics are taking away the need for humans to work for their income. That you and some few other propose we allow all that work and progress to go straight into the pockets of *only those who are already extremely wealthy* is morally wrong and will promote civil unrest far worse than what we have at present...
      And what we have at present is already a ticking time bomb. Without the rest of us, the wealthy would not even exist. Therefore they do in *fact* owe us a rather huge cut of what they deem as _only their wealth._ Without much more than just UBI, we will face a far more horrendous future than we would otherwise. The world is heading into no middle class, a few wealthy and more than 90% living in poverty across the world.
      Did you realize that for many decades America alone purposefully allows grain to rot to keep the price of bread high? Well apparently it's enough grain to feed the entire world, but they won't even consider changing this into something that could benefit the world as whole.
      Just imagine how much less war and poverty there would be in the world. Just imagine what it would be like if people in third world countries weren't starving so badly that they didn't all flock to the countries that have jobs, education and something for their children to eat. How instead of trying to just survive, they could work towards improving their countries of origin. Places that the great majority of them find heart breaking to leave. Just imagine if your country suddenly became impoverished... would you then be happy to leave if forever to go to another country where some would blame you for all their problems and weaknesses. And all just for wanting a better life.

Regenerating will eliminate that 50% and sequester what we are emitting from fossil fuels. We still need to transition away from carbon based fuels, but that won't be enough if we don't restore our soils and ocean. Check out Kiss the Ground

    I don’t know what it is but everyone in the tech and business community misinterprets the term “woke”. It’s a term to describe someone who’s enlightened, or spiritually woke and aware of the truth. Being aware of social issues and what not is a bi product of being woke. Originally it’s a term for people who have opened their third eye.

      It's true they don't. But if you think allowing them to run rampant and cause whatever harm they see fit is better than imposing some method to prevent them is a good thing, I cannot agree with you there. Rules and laws are necessary in a society that is not at least close 100% responsible for itself. Generally humans are nowhere near that responsible. So until that time we need laws and rules, and to learn to balance them for the good of the whole.
