Literally, my favorite fish to catch in Virginia! I actually picked some of the flies mentioned in the video when I visited the shop in person for the first time over Christmas break. Thanks for more insight!!!
@@ryankiesel4610 I run a 7’ sinking polyleader/versileader for unweighted streamers. I wade and cover all sorts of water so it’s convenient to have different sink rate options and the ability to go topwater at the ready. Most of these flies just flutter and float at the surface if not fished on some sort of sinking line.
Pat, as many of us around here, fish smallmouth with sinking tip or intermediate tip lines. Therefore, very rarely do we fish weighted flies. Nothing wrong with a clouser though, especially if you only have a floating fly line, just not one of our top producers.
Sweet video and much appreciated 🙏 I did such a dumb move and bought a couple "game changers", if you can call them that, from one of the big box stores and what a piece of crap, weighs a ton! And doesn't shed any water, maybe a 15wt would cast it ok but idk. Then ya get one of those legit finesse game changers from MRO and wow, total game changer..... Pun intended. Thanks as always MRO
Pat, great video. Solid line-up of smallie flies. Quick question: do you do anything special after an outing to dry out or extent the life of your big streamers like this? Thanks!
Dan, best to call or e-mail Pat at the shop. Last place you'll find him is on TH-cam answering questions but he WILL if you contact him through the shop. Thanks
What is the best fly rod setup for the flies you use. I just bought a 9' orvis 6wt and I strictly want to smallmouth fish , how should I set the reel up?
Best to contact Pat or the guys at the shop directly and they will be happy to help you out there. They don't come around here often...they are too busy in the shop. You can reach them at 614-451-0363 or admin@madriveroutfitters.com. Thanks
Thanks Pat for your information,, and yo know Super Keith Haungs tied up this ply like a pro; we get out as much as possible on the Elkhorn, and we use articulation flies, and no my flies are not near as nice as his
Thanks, I need to get some sink tip line. I mostly use 7 and 8 for popper dropper rigs that do well and heavy stuff. I swear by pink too, especially uv treated. I check their effect with a uv light. Can't go wrong with pink and white articulated anything in any conditions.
My basic process. Do you want the line to bring down the fly. Or do you want the fly to bring down the line. When running a floating line your fly will stay on the surface unless you use a heavy fly or add split shot. As you strip the floating line will lift up the fly. When using a sinker when you pause the line will sink so you can countdown how deep it goes. Then once it is down when you strip an unweighted fly will follow that line.

That's awesome - let us know how they do!
Even better 3 of the 5 flies were designed by Virginians; Mr. Chocklett and Mr. Kraft.
@@foragefarmer1300 the awesome to know, Virginian here that's gonna Chase smallies on the fly for the first time this year
Thanks for watching! What are your favorite smallmouth flies?
Every fly you pick up at www.madriveroutfitters.com directly supports the channel 🤙
I like lure fishing too
Yep, we do too.
My guy Pat. Just saw ya for the Smallie guide talk at the shop this weekend. Dude knows his stuff.
He certainly does! Thanks for participating.
Thank you for going over what line you throw it with, very helpful
Thanks for watching.
Great list of patterns. BTW I love how you attached your mic - very Hank Pattersonesque.
Timothy Perry Thanks but pretty sure Pat inveted that technique!
Mad River Outfitters you guys are much cooler in any case, so hence forth I shall refer to it as Pat’s mic mounting technique!
Timothy Perry 👍😝
Can the Minie Bangtail and Finesse Game Changer be fished on a floating line?

Love it, love it, love it! Thanks for the insight Pat. Definitely going to put those to use.
Thanks a ton for watching.

Can’t wait to fish with you guys in July!
See you soon!
Not even a mention of the clouser minnow! I guess we all have different preferences for flies but I was surprised not to see a clouser in the mix.

Thanks for the support. A game changer needs to say "Chocklett's" or it's not a game changer. Not found in Big Box stores as you have found out.

If I could have one line for smallmouth fishing on a 7 wt. rod what would your suggestion be? Sink tip, floating, or sinking

Question what weight rod should you us for these streamers
Grizzly Fish 6,7 or 8. Depends on the line, water and size of fish as well.
What weight line are you using with those large flies?
daveartwood 7 or 8?

What would be a good fly fishing setup for smallmouth ?
Please contact the shop directly and they will be happy to help. That’s what they do. Thanks.
When to use sinking line?
When fishing streamers and sub surface bass flies in general.

No cray patterns? Why?
