Having a problem with my dry flies dropping below the surface. I used a perfection knot and i did apply floatant to the fly and the line can the knot i used be to heavy
I know I'm late to the party but....this was sooooo SOOOO much better than the loop to loop connection I use a paper clip for my stiffener and literally in 30 seconds had a new tapered leader.. now leaders are a non issue in the field.. thank you for this!

Excellent video. I've worked out both ways to tie it, and I believe the end result is identical to the 'nail knot'. This is however a much easier way to tie it neatly and I like that it doesn't require a special tool that I can never seem to find :-)
Excellent video. I have just used it to attach a tapered 12 foot trout leader that was threaded through the tip of the fly line to make a connection similar to the classic needle knot - and it worked wonders, even with the long and thin leader section I had to handle.

Hi Brian, I'm pretty sure that 'Lather's Wire' is what in Canada we'd call Rebar wire. It's for tying the steel (rebar) in concrete together before a pour. Thanks for the great videos, I've learned a lot from you. Big fan of your work.
Old dyslexic me actually tied my leader onto my fly line using this knot. Also saw your vid about this knot with Flip. Thanks. I cut off the loop, lol.
For the last 12 to 15 years I've been using a slight variation of this that's called the needle knot. I was taught to me by Gary Sandstom, the owner of The Morning Hatch Fly Shop. Unfortunately Gary was forced to close this several years ago.😔 The needle knot uses a very small needle to make hole up through the center of the fly line for about 1 inch. Then I use a snell knot to permanently attach it to the fly line. I love this knot because there's no bump from the end of the fly line like you see with the nail knot. I really dislike that little bump as it goes through my guides when I'm landing a fish. I suppose I could use your snell knot and add just a very small amount of thick UV resin to smooth out that bump
Terrific instruction. I screwed up my first attempt as the leader was too short. I nailed, no pun intended, the second attempt and the third one. A short piece of stiff coat hanger works well as the "nail". Thanks!
Great instructional the knot lasts and lasts so much so that each time I have to do one I have to come back to your video as I have forgotten how since I last did one. Today it was a commercially made slip on loop that failed way out in a backcountry lake meaning I had to switch to spinning. 7 trout between 2 and 4 lb of which 2 spinning and the fish were taking my new design of cicada flies wish I could have fly fished all day.
Your channel had been so helpful. I was surprised with a fly rod for Christmas and I'm itching to get it and learn just waiting for this Cleveland weather to turn!

I am struggling with this a lot, I am getting a loop forming on the back end along with the tag end that I’m supposed to pull on to tighten, but that isn’t shown in the video, what happens to that loop? Is it covered up when you wrap the line?
Brian, have you ever seen a lathed wall? The lathe is the 1/4' thick X 2" wood strips that are wired together. Plaster or cement is held in place by the wired strips of wood. Sound familiar now? : )
I’m working with tapered leader. Is it the thin end of the leader that gets wrapped around 7-10 times? Or, is it the thick end that gets wrapped. It seems to me like the thick end should be wrapped so that the thickest end is knotted to the thick fly line. This one has thrown me for a loop (pun intended)! Thank you for your help! I used a nail not back in my day, but that is pretty slick. That is a perfect connection. Looks so much easier to tie too. I used a the red plastic tubes from a WD-40 can to tie my knots; cant pull on my denters like that thou, but I still know mermaids.....
Since you did mention that the butt section would be there for a loooong time. Once the butt section is tied on, how do you connect your leader and then change out leaders with that setup?
Great technique. I might have missed it in the comments but if you are setting up for tarpon or GT, how many wraps and what strength butt section do you recommend.
I'm assuming if you are building a leader, you do this with the butt section prior to adding on the mid and tippet, as those knots wouldn't pull through?

Hey there! Nice channel, good advices! On this knot now, I’ve tried it before, but 1. I was unable every time to remove the wire without messing the knot and 2. I realized that it usually sinks the coils of the leader into the fly line’s outer layer, messing it up I found that the Albright knot works better...I’m using Albright knot to make leaders from ever decreasing diameter of mono (tapering it). Yet I dislike the knots bulkiness. Would you recommend those knots for #3-5, or you would go for loops? Regards!
With this method you would rarely if ever change the leader. The butt section will remain constant and you will change mid sections and tippets. Hope that helps.

Love the videos, in fact all your series. I've tied the mono loop to my fly line with the nail knot and added the perfection loop. I then connected the leader loop to the perfection loop as per you other video (correctly). However there seems to be some play, 1/8 inch in the loops. I wonder how or if this will impact setting the hook. Can't wait for the store to come online again, I need a 9' 5wt 😉 for my son. I did get a small order in just before you guys went offline. I've had the same problem on some Rio Bonefish lines and some Orvis trout lines, usually after a few seasons and the fly line coating seems to soften from use, sun, sunscreen, bug repellant, etc. I have been tying this knot for a season and I don't think big trout or bonefish can put enough strain to pull the coating off the line. You might be using too much force when tightening. Fly line cores are only 30-35 lb test so drop down to 20 lb of test force. See if you can get some twenty lb line and see what it takes to break it or get a hand scale. I know that Skip Pallot and these guys swear by this knot and I'm trying to believe them, but some fly line coatings can't tolerate large longitudinal forces. I've gone to Airflo lines for bonefish which have a urethane fly line coating which is sunscreen and bug repellant resistant.
Sometimes I like having a little "fun" with big box store fishing staff... I'll wander into the fishing section and zero in on one of the 20 year old guppies working that counter, and then with a dead serious face tell them "Take me to your _leader!"_ and THEN watch the cogs behind their eyes skip or break a few teeth while they try to process that! - "My what???" 😁😅 "You DO sell fishing line here right?"😂

let me ask / back 50 or so years ago . did they have the line we do today or did they have a 1 basic line and used that for both dry and wet flies??. they where more frugal back then as what we are now as a people in America .

Would an FG knot work for this? It's very similar to nail but I've only seen FG for braided line to mono. Same idea though, main line gripping leader line.
Getting frustrated. I'm practicing with regular line just to figure it out but as soon as I get to the part where you pull the tag end, the main line pulls right out. Ending up with a great knot on what would be the leader. I've tried a few times but not sure what I'm doing wrong

I know that this knot has worked for you for many years, but I was wondering if the knot would slip at all because there's nothing to stop the line from sliding through (as opposed to something like a double uni where one knot is stopped by the other knot). I used a nail knot - didn't know about this version of it. Is a nail knot still fine for attaching a leader to fly line? I used the surgeons knot to attach tippet to leader.
Mine keeps coming out backwards and its really getting on my nerves, the thicker part of the liter keeps going down instead of staying up where it needs to be connected to the fly line. Why does this keep happening
I'm having the same problem. Trashed a new leader trying it lol, I tried cutting it and retying it a couple times. Every time it came out with the same result.

Most important to be able to see the fly line. He loves the Orange when possible. Reel is just for looks.

so, if using a tapered leader you'd use the tippit end and pull that out??? or, use a short piece of 1X then tie the tapered leader to that??
Mike Dameron Yes, you would pull the tippet out. IX would be WAY too thin to use as a connector.

Nail knots to the mid sections and tippet. With this system there is no need to "change out" leaders. Stay tuned though as much more to come on this.

You actually WANT it to dig into the coating on the fly line. That's how it grabs and holds tight.
Every time I start wrapping the loop around the wire, the fly line start to wrap behind my thumb and forefinger. Is there a reason this happens?

I've gone to Airflo lines for bonefish which have a urethane fly line coating which is sunscreen and bug repellant resistant.
Sometimes I like having a little "fun" with big box store fishing staff... I'll wander into the fishing section and zero in on one of the 20 year old guppies working that counter, and then with a dead serious face tell them "Take me to your _leader!"_ and THEN watch the cogs behind their eyes skip or break a few teeth while they try to process that! - "My what???" 😁😅 "You DO sell fishing line here right?"😂

How do you make the leaders from there? Add two more progressively thinner sections with surgeons knots?

ristics4 Nail knot for attaching leader to fly line or backing to fly line only. Surgeons or blood knot for mono to mono. E-mail or call the shop if any further questions.
Whenever I try to tie this knot the butt section always breaks that u pull through the snell. With not much force. Idk what I’m doing wrong

let me ask / back 50 or so years ago . did they have the line we do today or did they have a 1 basic line and used that for both dry and wet flies??. they where more frugal back then as what we are now as a people in America .

Would an FG knot work for this? It's very similar to nail but I've only seen FG for braided line to mono. Same idea though, main line gripping leader line.

I don't think it would because the fly line is so thick it would not dig into the flurocarbon as is needed with an fg knot

Getting frustrated. I'm practicing with regular line just to figure it out but as soon as I get to the part where you pull the tag end, the main line pulls right out. Ending up with a great knot on what would be the leader. I've tried a few times but not sure what I'm doing wrong

I know that this knot has worked for you for many years, but I was wondering if the knot would slip at all because there's nothing to stop the line from sliding through (as opposed to something like a double uni where one knot is stopped by the other knot). I don't know if that made much sense, but I would appreciate it to get your thoughts on this. Thanks, Brian!

We do it on all types of lines. No problems.

I used a nail knot - didn't know about this version of it. Is a nail knot still fine for attaching a leader to fly line? I used the surgeons knot to attach tippet to leader.

Mine keeps coming out backwards and its really getting on my nerves, the thicker part of the liter keeps going down instead of staying up where it needs to be connected to the fly line. Why does this keep happening

I'm having the same problem. Trashed a new leader trying it lol, I tried cutting it and retying it a couple times. Every time it came out with the same result.
It's because ( I think one time Brian says butt when he means the end that will take the fly ) watch his hands rather than the words
When I tight it my fly line brakes peels off how can I avoid that?

Should you put glue on the fly line after you cut it? Heard people say water gets in and makes sink?
Not necessary. As Flip says, this knot seals it up tight. You can if you want though.

Is there a way to make it easier to tie the loops on? The thick end of the leader is so stiff that makes it nearly impossible to do the loops.
Not sure about that. Never had an issue really. Contact the shop if they can help further?
