If you ever went fishing with my uncle and he asked for a panfish bug you'd ask him " what color do you want?" "Any color" he'd reply "as long as it's yellow". Everyone on that lake called him Mr. Bluegill. My rule is chartreuse by day, yellow during Sunset, and black after Sun is down starting to get dark and moon is bright.

It's funny you showed that chartreuse popper as your to to bug. A little yellow popper just about like that saved many day of fishing with my dad when I was younger. We'd finish my paper route in the morning and then head to our favorite lake about 40 miles away. We'd fish for bass/northerns until mid morning then go to the gill beds with little yellow poppers just about like you showed. My dads been gone for 30 years now so thanks for the memories. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Panfish are fun, and a great way to get kids into fly fishing as well. My favorite pattern that always catches something is a green weenie in worm green, Caddis green, or chartreuse.

Panfish are a growing obsession for me. I've been spinner fishing for them for 7 years now and like many, I'm also branching out to cast a fly at them. Looking forward to seeing those panfish fly patterns, particularly that wax worm thingy you showed. If you can, do a vid on it early on so we can spend some time on those long winter nights tying a few! I'll bet that wax worm pattern might also go good under the ice.

ONE of the great things about panfish is that they are always ready for a fight. Morning, noon and right up to dark. Muddy water, clear water their always ready to dish out a nice fight. My fav is 4 wtw/7' fiberglass (OLD Eagle Claw rod) with the one of the old Martin single action reels I have stashed back.
Fav bug is the old time green sponge spider. I used to buy the Betts (when I could find them) and eventually learned to tie my own but green bodies are impossible to find.....

My best luck for bluegills come from tiny poppers, and tiny foam hoppers, spiders, or beetles. Sometimes I'll use a pure "dry fly", or wooly buggers, too. If they're there, it's not hard to get them to strike! There are lots of small, shallow, ponds in my area full of scum and vegetation, so I don't need (or really want!) to go too deep.

I had a Cabela’s fly rod and reel for many years but never really got into fly fishing although every once in a while I’d break it out and catch a bass or two. Then I stumbled onto a FB page called “Panfish on the Fly” which rekindled my interest! I’ve also learned much from your videos and have a question. When fishing a panfish popper with a dropper nymph setup, does this change the size of the leader/tippet you would use compared to only using a popper or single fly? Hope my question makes sense! Thanks.

Any success with flies for perch? My limited experience is bright attractors work better than imitative patterns. Add a stinger hook since they often nip at the fly and fish deep and slow with a sink tip line.
My best pattern for BIG bluegill is an olive dragon fly nymph, maybe size 8.
