  • Bass are the number one sport fish in America and for good reason. They are great fighters and are in virtually every state! Host Tom Rosenbauer details the basics of getting started in fly fishing for bass. He even compares conventional tackle lures to matched flies. A wonderful starter video for anyone keen to add fly fishing to their bass fishing options.

    I first learned how to toss a fly when my stepmothers father took my to Blairsville Ga. back in 1991. I've been hooked ever since. 1st fish was a 12in rainbow. Last fish was cought this morning . 6lb large mouth bass on a poper. He was on the bed. Kept my lil deer hair right above him till it pissed him off. Love these videos. I always learn something new. Keep em coming!!

    Thanks! I am recovering from hip replacement surgery in Anchorage, AK & looking at different fly fishing trips that I would like to take. I remember a trip to Eastern Washington in 2007, when I was able to land a few nice large mouth bass on a fly Rod. This video got me looking at including bass waters in my fly fishing trips to the the lower 48.

    Back in the 80's I had fished with a fly rod for 15 years and caught many bream-my favorite to eat. One day, it occurred to me that I had never caught a bass. I went to the local library (this was years before the internet) and read a book on Fly Fishing. It stated that bass were more skittish than other fish and that the presentation was different. I had been working the lure almost immediately after the cast and gave it 10-12 seconds before moving to a different spot. The book suggested waiting 45 seconds to a minute for the bass to run off and come back. I went that afternoon to my local pond and tried. I caught 7 bass in a row by just using a different and slower method. This was an eye opener for me and I hope it helps someone else that loves fly fishing.

    I just started fly fishing about 3 yrs. ago so I'm basically a novice. I moved to Frankfort, KY. 2 yrs. ago and discovered Elkhorn Creek from a local cano/kayaking store. The smallmouth are fantastic and very plentiful! I just recently started trying poppers and had tremendous success. Many thanks for your video on fishing with poppers!

    • @ffg8736
      @ffg8736 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fish the elkhorn from time to time-- although finding good wading spots can be difficult because much of the good waters are private property. I tend to stick to the large mouth in farm ponds scattered around the west side of town. Catching on a fly here is really easy because not many people do it.

I ended up buying a Jackson Kilroy model fishing kayak from Canoe Kentucky and it has opened up an entirely new world of fishing for me! They also rent fishing kayaks. So, if you're ever back in my area give them a call or get in touch with me and come enjoy some of the best smallies you can find!

    So, do you recommend a weight- forward line as opposed to bass taper flyline? Is river vs lake fishing become a factor when picking a line taper?

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're just starting out, a basic WF line will do what you need. As you get more advanced and experienced, then we recommend you consider a bass design taper which helps you cast larger and wind-resistant flies. Both lines will work on lakes or rivers. Good question, thanks!

    Did he just say that bass seldom pull any line??? I live here in East Tennessee. We have the TVA Tennessee River system and The Little/Pigeon rivers . Smallmouth pull line harder than most here . Do not agree with that statement...

      Josh, agree with you....depends upon where the fish are and environment. I also find river smallies are much stronger than even large bass in lakes. Thanks

      Didn’t say never. I have personally only ever had striped bass pull line which are not even in the black bass family so I think seldom was a good word.

    Black Bass are like toddlers: easily distracted, remarkably durable, and they'll try to eat almost anything. The difference is that bass aren't so good at shoving things up their noses, and people normally frown upon fishing for toddlers.

    I stopped fishing for bass do to the fact of them not pulling drag and being too ready to fish.

      I love how people from the north talk trash about bass 😂. I guess when the biggest bass you have in your lakes are 2 pounders they don’t pull drag😂. Come to Florida try to fly fish and you will get your little fly rod broken by a Florida bass.

      5lb bass on a 4wt with a 4lb tipet....that will make your heart stop. And the DO pull drag. I've been flyfishing since 1991.

    How to catch bass on a fly rod? Same as any other time; get a boat. Yeah, if you have that kind of change to throw away. Reality check, please. Even an inflatable pontoon costs a ton of money, let alone jonboats like the ones used in this video.

      Not familiar with that specific fly rod, recommend you get some advice from local fly shop. Failing that, see if there is a fly club in your area and members can help you with this. Good luck on your adventure of discovery, you'll love fly fishing!

      Get something a little bit better quality than 23 bucks. You get what you pay for. Well worth the cost, and it will last you forever if you care for it.
