A quick way to check if you're one tooth out is put it tdc, pull the tapper cover and rock the crank back and forth passed tdc and either 1 or 4 will be Rocking. Check to makes sure the rockers are Rocking at the same height as you swing back and forth passed tdc on the crank. If you're one tooth out, one rocker will be higher than the other. It's easy to see.

Hey thanks mate, yep I getcha. I wanted to fit the adjustable cam gear anyway so needed to open it up either way. Turns out I had the timing spot on (for a factory cam) in the end anyway :)

Use a dial gauge down a plug hole, mark top dead centre on your crank. Use dial gauge again on a lifter. Compare to cam specs. Usually can't rely on factory settings if using a reground or aftermarket cam (if you are).

Yep that's my reason for making the adjustable cam gear. It turns out the timing was correct (to suit a factory cam) anyway, but will be dialing this one in now properly with the adj cam gear :)

I think my cam bolt is loose on my 18r, 5k custom cam from Japan, too scared to open the motor up, I’ll leave it sitting for another few months I reckon

haha Schrodinger's engine - it is both fixed and broken as long as I don't open it up to check ;)

Literally did this 3 times and it still won’t start. Hope you figure it out soon

Timing was spot on for a factory cam, but as it's a custom cam it needs to be properly dialed in - coming up in my next vids :)
