- In this video I have a look at a customers GMC 1500 with the big 5.3. He dropped it off and said it had a "little tick" in the engine. Yeahhh a little tick huh!? Sounds more like A LOT OF TICK to me.
-Enjoy!

You could have sold that guy a new engine. There's a special place in heaven for ethical mechanics.
It would have to be a new engine and a tensioner 😊. I’ve never seen a mechanic sell an engine for a “unethical” reason. But I have seen them sold for the wrong reasons “incorrect diagnosis” more than once!
Busy shop wouldn't need to get involved in unnecessary engine replacements. They want to make money and ship cars out quickly.
@@vadim7590exactly and most mechanics are not interested in replacing perfectly good parts
"YOU" does not apply. What happens when owner gets a second opinion? Nitwit.
@notchback93 they do when the need an LS for their project car in the back of the shop
The look on Mrs. O's face as you pulled the truck up to the lift, absolutely priceless!
So easy she could have fixed it and had hubby dealing with troll calls. That would make a great video..... job swap for a day.
When she said I don't think thats the manifold, it turned me on..
@@SwickazNow, be nice😢😢
Yep, video was totally worth it for that alone. Car repair comedy gold!
@@harrylister804 Just don't let them swap clothes. I do NOT want to see Mr. O. dressed like Mrs. O.
Never a good sign when your mechanic IMMEDIATELY shuts the truck down as soon as he hears it running :)
Good sign you have a decent mechanic though.
@@NobodyUROnly if they do a cheap and honest fix like Eric does. Probably could have stuck that poor guy for a WHOLE bunch. This area is very fortunate to have an honest mechanic like Eric.
Mechanic: "Holy SH!T! I gotta turn that off!"
@@markh.6687 Me thinkst something is afoul in paradise😱😱😱
That GMC sounds like the time my garbage disposal tried to eat a spoon !!
I have a spoon that's permanently maimed from the same happening to it!
Definitely not a wasted video. Never assume anything. Diagnose properly. Might save time and money! Great video as always!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Tighten bolt. Put belt on. Check bolt tension. Assemble bit and bobs. Check bolt tension. Close hood and while driving it back to the parking lot remember to check the bolt tension. Shut off engine and go get 15mm wrench to check bolt tension. Call customer to pick up vehicle. Can't sleep at 3am because you can't remember if you tightened the bolt. Gotta love being a mechanic.
This wasn't a silly video. I was truly relieved for this guy.
Lost the idler on my F150, drifted into a grocery store parking lot and called for a rentacar. Looked under the hood and the belt was off and found the lose idler. Got to work, local ford had the part, grabbed part and some tools and when I got back to the truck there was a note 'from a mechanic' that he noticed my belt hanging down and to check it out before driving. Damn nice of him.
Thanks a bunch, Eric O! Now every time I hear a horn honk nearby, I find myself saying “hey it’s that guy” 😂😂
I yell hows the mom and them... 😅
"Horn blows; how 'bout the driver??"
This wasn't Mrs Os first rodeo she knew that wasn't manifolds. You two crack me up! 😂😂❤❤
I'm sure it will be soon tho, I spy a broken bolt on the front of the drivers manifold.
@@DavidScheiber PRNY always wins! 🤣🤣
Put a bunch of part numbers into the oil pan.
OK, not going to lie, that was hilarious and I nearly spewed and inhaled my coffee at the same time.
Consider that phrase stolen.
Short but sweet and Mrs. O was there too!! Great video, Mr. O. Loved it.
I'm sure I stole it at some point haha
Mrs. O is a phenomenal diagnostic specialist!! Eric pulled in and Mrs. O said “lol that’s not a tick!” So crazy how fast that went out according to the owner!
God bless~
No, she said "that's not an exhaust manifold". Exhaust manifold leaks can sound like ticking. She's picked a few things up over the years.
@@piquat1 thanks professor
Don't put things in quotes when that's not what she said. You're paraphrasing, you basically just made it up. There you go, you learned two things today.
@@piquat1 oh I definitely learned something today that’s for sure!
Agreed! That is for sure the LOUDEST failing tensioner I have ever heard! Great content as always thanks
Did you see how loose that pulley was. That tensioner pulley was about 10-15 miles from leaving the chat, "I'm done, see ya"
Remember Eric we like to watch the simple videos too.
It’s no difference than kids who watch other kids play video games.
My father, God rest his soul, always said GMC stood for Great Man's Chariot. His had my all time favorite bumper sticker: "Yes this is my truck. No, I won't help you move."
They're junkers now
Very true. Owning a van, everyone assumes your a free removal company.

Gotta Mechanic Comin
I've had a Ford Pickup for over 20 years now. . .When I asked to help move someone, I always answer' "You can use my truck, I'll do the driving, you load and unload!"
There are no silly videos from you, all have worth. Thank you SMA. Erick and wife and feline. Blessings DVD:)
Another day another chevrolet!
The German equivalent is 'Alle tage ein andere Volkswagen'
I work in the Netherlands and we work on VAG cars as much as you work on GMs
VAG cars... that's hilarious as that's slang in the USA and quite fitting for a lot of the drivers.
Sounded like Jim Rockford was ringin from the 70's.
Some of that new fangled CHEVY THUNDER
Right!? Chevy Rattle!! Doesn't have the ring as Chevy Thunder!
"That sounds a lot better!"
That, sir, is the understatement of the year!!!
Well done!! Need more honest and reliable people/mechanics like you in the world.
"I thought it was going to put a lot of part numbers in the bottom of the oil pan." had me lol, truly enjoy the dry wit and humor from you.
Mrs O is great. Her face when she said that sure aint no manifold leak. Those things have 3 belts. It's funny vehicles used to have multi belt setups. Then with serpente system everything on one belt. Now they are back to 2 or 3 belts
I think it's just two, a stretch belt for the A/C, and serpentine belt for the rest of the accessories.
@@brnmcc01 3 for that generation. Vacuum.pump has its own belt
GMC means good man's companion.
I thought it was a Diesel engine! Love the O! statement when you started the engine the first time.
I think the diesels are quieter haha
I would have said, go throw some fuel oil in and move on. Probably could have added another 100 foot/lbs of torque.
@@SouthMainAuto I am wanting both 6.0 liter diesels in my Superduty and Excursion ARE quieter. The new diesels are very quiet. Exactly right!
@@SouthMainAuto I was surprised you didn't sell him a new belt, you know, "while we're in there". Literally zero extra labor to just put a new belt on. Maybe that one was in really good shape, couldn't see belt condition that well on the video.
This guy is my hero! Eric is so knowledgeable when it comes to all aspects of Automotive Repair. I live in Brooklyn New York and I'm going to send him my 2007 GMC Yukon Denali to diagnose and I'm sure he will find a problem as so many others have failed in diagnosing the dreaded P0300😢 I know he will definitely find the issue and solve the problem! I am a huge huge fan
I work for Factory Motor Parts. We bought all the Auto Plus Stores in the area. We supply Genuine original equipment GM and Motorcraft Parts. OE AC Delco and Motorcraft batteries. Along with aftermarket parts, Drive products Moog etc.. Probably cheaper than your local dealer too, Which FMP supplies parts too. Thank you Eric for the great videos.
FMP --- "not a sponsor" But you got a shot at it, Napper is slow to pull the trigger.
why does Mr O call you "fast freddies" ?
Definitely a great supplier! Use them alot , Webster Ny!
Don`t you hate it why you pull into work the first thing in the morning and the boss is standing there, waiting on you! 🤣
Don't you love it when that happens and you know it's *NOT* an issue. Good boss is like gold. Little tyrant can ruin the whole week. Think we've all had both kinds.
I thought that GMC was going for a little trip, straight to the boneyard. Your diagnostic skills saved the day.
I thought it was going to be on it's way for a final trip to Bath, NY. To Wilbert's pick a part. 😁😁
I was scared it was the lifters! Nice to see Vanessa!
Been watching for years and never heard the "batphone" ring before.
FMP, Factory Motor Parts is out of Minneapolis, largest ACDelco Distributor in the country by dollar volume and foot print. Over the past 20 years, half a dozen of the big ACDelco distributors have been buying up independent parts operators that have multiple stores. (Jobbers) FMP has access to ACDelco and Motorcraft OEM parts, as well as all the other big brands like Gates etc.
Thank, was scrolling through to see what is FMP...
So a more direct store besides rock Auto parts 👍
A swift fix, and we got to see the lovely Mrs O, what a great way to start the day.
Wow that sounded terrible I was expecting no oil but was all that noise for a tensioner
Same lol
That tensioner noise was horrific. Holy smokes.
Silly video or Not, they ALL Help Pay the Bills so Mrs. O can go Shopping and Cook both of you some Great food in her Kitchen. 👍🙏
I wonder if Vanessa knows how famous she is? We all love her.
I've heard some noisy idler bearings and adjuster bearings, but that one takes the prize.
Mrs O with the correct diagnosis there.
Quicker than Eric too!
It's nice to know that not every terrible rattle will mean a catastrophic failure and a big bill.
I'm impressed. Didn't even need a code reader!
In most garages, the louder the belt tensioner, the more expensive it is. ;)
The owner will be very relieved it's just a belt tensioner 😁
Bet that customer was REALLY happy to get that phone call.
Very useful video to show how to isolate parts and make a quick diagnosis. Never too silly Eric.
Eric, I kind of get a chuckle every time you talk about GM vehicles. I have a 2001 GMC Sierra Z71 with a 5.3L V8 that I bought new off the local GMC dealership car lot back in 2001 and it runs great and it still has its original belt tensioner, and original engine, trans, transfer case, differential, water pump, alternator, exhaust, etc etc so they can last a while.
I straight-up flinched and did one of those little Homer Simpson screams when you fired that thing up.
that has got to be the worst-sounding tensioner EVER.
When a part diagnoses itself 🙂
I love it when Eric mimics the noises a vehicle makes with his mouth; especially the turbo. GREAT VIDEO!
And his torque wrench click. ;)
Every Chevy truck owner wishes their tick tick noise was just the tensioner. great video.
Very true
The GDI injector install should be a great video.
Every SMA video is better with Mrs O. ❤
I can imagine most of the phone calls go, "hey I have some questions, are you busy working on a vehicle".... * well I was!*
I love that it turned out to be something simple. We always expect the worst, and hope for the best. And thank GOD for the blessings 🙌. Nice video Eric 🎉
@ 5:14, Can't help myself. Way back when Steve Allen had his 11:?? PM show I'd stay up Friday nights and watch it, late 50s early 60s. You could hear a car horn outside honk on air, and Steve, no matter what he was involved in, would yell, "I'll be right out" as do I mentally to this day. I guess it's an age thing.
I appreciate you showing us some of these things too. Its nice to know something so horrible could be so "simple."
The world doesn't really hate you after all. This quickie was partial payback for some of those nightmares that have rolled into the shop lately.
I'd like to buy a vowel - O
I'd like to solve the puzzle - "South Main Auto Rocks"
Share the channel folks! This is good content. Let’s take Eric O to one million subs!!!!
I put an 06, 6.0 engine in my 62 GMC and I smelled rubber burning and shut it off quick. The idler pully bearing had desentigrated and the belt was getting abused. I started it long enough to coast down the hill in town and was very happy the local parts store had one and loaned me a 15 mil wrench to change it out. Sometimes it's easy peasy 👍
One of my customers had their car towed to Pep Boy's after it died driving down the highway. They told him his motor was locked up solid and had to be replaced. He wanted a second opinion so I went down to the Pep Boy's. Put a breaker bar on the crank pulley and sure enough it would not turn. Pep Boy's mechanic came out all proud, "it needs a motor". I asked if he tried removing the belt. "nope, don't need to because the motors locked up." So I quickly yanked off the belt and started the engine. A/C compressor had locked up solid. Pep Boy's mechanic was no longer in the mood for conversation.
Definitely not a silly video. What a huge win for the owner
Wow, it sure sounded like the engine was going south. Lucky customer.
Not only the loudest tensioner I’ve heard but also the LONGEST SPINNING one. Wow!
It was definitely NOT a wasted video, I never thought about removing a belt to run the engine as a diagnostic tool. Thank you.
Yeah, I usually just spin each pulley by hand to feel/hear anything
Not so small a blessing to have a life life partner that "gets" what you do. If I'm out in the driveway DIYing it to trade $1000 in shop labor for knuckle wounds, all my wife usually says to me is "are you done playing around yet? I need to go save 2$ because mayo is on sale!"
Welcome to my world bro. Really has no appreciation for my saving money by DIYing things. I can't start car repair because she has a nail appt. Yet I have to dyi car repair so we can afford her nail appt.
Customer got Lucky. Tensioner over Lifters any day !
Thanks for showing some of the more mundane repairs. Not everything has to be a knock down drag out!!!!
I call Dibbs on his Bug Shield !
I was so happy to see it was just the Tension Pulley!! I have a Chevy with the exact Motor and boy did that noise scare me. Thanks for showing us its not Always the worst case.....Eric this was by no means a "silly" video. As I said above I can't be the only GM 5.3 owner that had a lump in their throat when you first started it. The amount of exhales when you found the pulley was heard around the world!
Every time that dang horn honks, all my dogs bark! 🤣
You got a break !!!! Easy peasy job, 10 minutes and you're writing up the bill !!!!! I didn't even get the coffee poured into my cup and you were done.!!!!!!!
give eric some bread and butter because he's suckin up the gravy on this one!
I been watching your channel for years and your content is about as educating as you can get. Thanks.
Sometimes the customer gets lucky!
Not a wasted video at all. Even the easy issues are worth showing.
Dang that was very loud and scary it sound like something was about to let go in the engine today with the customers lucky day turn out to be something simple instead of major work good job Eric has always😂😂
Decades ago I had a 1970 Volvo 145. Driving it home from work on the freeway I heard the unmistakable sound of a rod knock. I got it home and dropped the pan... no loose rod bearings! The sound, even at pull-through, was actually coming from under the timing cover. The fiber ringed timing gear had separated, with the fiber piece riding up until it slapped back down. I replaced the gear and all was well.
Been there done that with my 145 somewhere on Vermont Route 29 east of Schuylerville, NY. I pulled the timing cover in the Summer sun while my work partner first hitched to town for a 1 1/16" socket and then to Albany for a timing set ($110.00). Installed the new gears, tightened the nut and snapped the end right off the camshaft. What a day! We still had to go to Marine city, Michigan and I was burned to a sun-fired crisp. Good times. Not quite 50 years ago!
Yes, there are a lot of dishonest shops out there that would have pretended they had to tear the engine down. We all wish you lived in our area.
Mr O saving a Chevy from the crusher again
I've never heard a idler or tensioner sound that bad, must've been within minutes of heading to tensioner heaven.
You are a mechanical genius. The way you attack a malfunction from code number through your paid wiring service, following power and ground until you discover the problem. Your corrosion expectations many times direct you to the simplest of solutions. I wish i lived closer to you.
Great video. My favorite part was Mrs. O saying that doesn't sound like an exhaust manifold. When you mentioned that the truck uses a ton of oil it reminded me of something my father said. He was a Ford mechanic and a buddy had told him his F350 was using a ton of oil. Dad said I know it's gonna sound strange but next oil change use Motorcraft oil and see what happens. No more using a ton of oil. This was back in the stone age (late 70's). I'm not saying he should put Motorcraft oil in a GMC because that just goes against the laws of nature. Maybe change oil brands. Maybe not use Walmart oil. Maybe not go to Express Lube and Chinese food.
That’s less “tick” and more “clack”!
Pretty easy to do the belt and tensioner. Not every truck is that simple. Good job GM.
Loudest tensioner I ever heard as well. Nice one bud👍
I like those "silly" videos. I for sure thought we had a visit from Uncle Rodney, when you started the engine at first 🤣
Maybe "a silly video" but it's very amusing and it put a smile on my face on this all too early morning
I'll take 10 of those a day to keep the lights on!
Most of the shops around me did just that, (service/maintenance) jobs.
Some would ask why I was doing engine and transmissions?
"Because somebody has too" more work in the end butt I got paid.
Keep up the good work Professor O! 😎✌🤟
Scared me as well when you first cranked it, I thought it had completely wiped the valvetrain. Good thing he has you for a mechanic, he could've been taken to the cleaners.
I don't think I've ever seen a tensioner/idler pulley that would freewheel that long. Wow!
Well for the first time you were correct! “If I can do it - you can do it.” That one I could have done! 😂
That guy passing by and tooting the horn is just another happy customer. YOUR the Best. Aaron from Canada.
When you first fired it up I was like that’s some serious valvetrain issue right there. Very scary. But thank goodness it was the belt tensioner
Eric, That had to ve the quickest diagnosis to date on SMA. When the head diagnostician(??) Mrs. "O" is shaking her head as you pulled in, I nearly lost it. She was ready to put a stick of TNT up its tail hole and put the poor thing out of its misery 😢😢. Thank God calmer heads prevailed and another bowtie buddy is still wandering the back roads of NY😂😂
That was the noisest tensioner I've ever heard! It sounded like the battery may be a little tired when the engine was cranked over. HHMMM. Maybe the next video for this vehicle?
Good one Mr. O. Nice to see Mrs. O.
As Winnipegs own "The Guess Who" would sing; "She's come undone" Nice
Bowl of cereal and a SMA video will get your day started right! 👍👍
Thank You for being so honest , hope you and Mrs. O have a wonderful day .
It is amazing there were any bearing balls still in the race.
Than you for the quiet stool.
There are no silly videos. This type of stuff is really helpful for the do it yourselfers
I have a 2015 that the tensioner pulley was fine one day, started talking to birds the next, then cut the width of the belt right down the middle the day after that. It went from fine to nearly catastrophic nearly instantly.
