Tighten bolt. Put belt on. Check bolt tension. Assemble bit and bobs. Check bolt tension. Close hood and while driving it back to the parking lot remember to check the bolt tension. Shut off engine and go get 15mm wrench to check bolt tension. Call customer to pick up vehicle. Can't sleep at 3am because you can't remember if you tightened the bolt. Gotta love being a mechanic.

One of my customers had their car towed to Pep Boy's after it died driving down the highway. They told him his motor was locked up solid and had to be replaced. He wanted a second opinion so I went down to the Pep Boy's. Put a breaker bar on the crank pulley and sure enough it would not turn. Pep Boy's mechanic came out all proud, "it needs a motor". I asked if he tried removing the belt. "nope, don't need to because the motors locked up." So I quickly yanked off the belt and started the engine. A/C compressor had locked up solid. Pep Boy's mechanic was no longer in the mood for conversation.

The sound, even at pull-through, was actually coming from under the timing cover. The fiber ringed timing gear had separated, with the fiber piece riding up until it slapped back down. I replaced the gear and all was well.

Installed the new gears, tightened the nut and snapped the end right off the camshaft. What a day! We still had to go to Marine city, Michigan and I was burned to a sun-fired crisp. Good times. Ooooo a video. A tick!? That sounds horrendous.
I thought it was going to sound like my gmc, got a lifter tick, old 5.3. Tick tick tick, all the time.
My bet on the red one is either a water pump failure or maybe timing chain. 🤷‍♂️ *I was wrong*

Eric, I kind of get a chuckle every time you talk about GM vehicles. I have a 2001 GMC Sierra Z71 with a 5.3L V8 that I bought new off the local GMC dealership car lot back in 2001 and it runs great and it still has its original belt tensioner, and original engine, trans, transfer case, differential, water pump, alternator, exhaust, etc etc so they can last a while.

Not a silly video at all! I bought a 1981 Impala with 80k & a "bad engine." They were told that the rod bearings were shot. I bought it thinking I could have a reman engine installed & still had a great deal. Turned out one of the screws that hold down the distributor rotor came off & was rattling around the cap. I rebuilt the leaking carb & put 200k on before it got tee-boned.

Most of the shops around me did just that, (service/maintenance) jobs.
Some would ask why I was doing engine and transmissions?
"Because somebody has too" more work in the end butt I got paid.
Keep up the good work Professor O! 😎✌🤟

Good and simple. Had a tensioner on a 90's Monte Carlo that broke and broke the serpentine belt. AAA got me towed to garage for which I was already scheduled for a NY State inspection. Told owner it's a little more than inspection now.

FMP, Factory Motor Parts is out of Minneapolis, largest ACDelco Distributor in the country by dollar volume and foot print. Over the past 20 years, half a dozen of the big ACDelco distributors have been buying up independent parts operators that have multiple stores. (Jobbers) FMP has access to ACDelco and Motorcraft OEM parts, as well as all the other big brands like Gates etc.

The noise sounded like the valves were getting destroyed by the cylinders. Little ticking noise? I would be afraid to know what a big ticking noise is for this owner. Bad tensioner. This owner is lucky as anything. Thanks for sharing. It restores my faith in humanity that something good happened here. I have a good GM car - a 2018 Buick Envision. Now with 90,000 miles and nothing has gone wrong with it. Knock on wood but the car was built for 7 years as it was so they had time to use warranty data and six sigma to re-engineer many parts to make them better and last much longer. So far so good.

It makes you feel good to give someone good news for a change. I've been able to do it three times in the last week. A friend showed up today for some advice on his 1999 Silverado 5.3. It was just making a racket. Then the belt broke and it got quiet. He was pretty relieved it was just the water pump because until that belt broke he was convinced it needed an engine.

I have a 2015 that the tensioner pulley was fine one day, started talking to birds the next, then cut the width of the belt right down the middle the day after that. It went from fine to nearly catastrophic nearly instantly.

  • @wiley0714

Might have seemed ridiculous, however, I would have spent time trying to put a piece of wood all over the engine, etc. to find the noise as opposed to just going through the step process of taking off the belt to eliminate the drive pulleys.
So to me, this video is worth it.
I've had the pleasure of the learning experience of ordering a pulley, and then finding out that it was, or rather, it comes in different formats some are smooth and some have grooves. And more importantly, some come with a new bolt and some do not. Then there are some that have a bushing and some that do not for the bolt. So for the DIY guy, trust me when I say this is still a valuable video even to you the professional.
