Nice amusement on the top of the hill. The ride that you saw from cable car (that went down on the hill to the city on a track), was a summer toboggan (or someone would say summer luge, mountain coaster, Alpine coaster); this is something very popular in the European Alpine regions in last years (especially Germany, Austria, Slovenia, for instance in Bled, Maribor and Rogla in Slovenia where I rode that) and it seems that it came to Kazakhstan, too, interesting. It differs from amusement park rides that you alone can control the speed of the ride and not someone else or computer.

Most places you travel in the former Soviet Union, including KAZ, have shifty taxi drivers staking out clueless foreigners at airports. Even the 'legitimate' taxi drivers in the legitimate taxi lines at the airport can mess with you. It is advisable to make arrangements for your airport transfers with your hotel, your business (if you are there on business), or friends (if you have made friends you can trust there to help you). In the 90s, they actually had taxi drivers kidnap you and take you out to the middle of the Steppe. The 90s was very rough there. Now, they just steal your stuff or force you to fork over a ridiculous amount of money.

Having llived in KAZ for 8 years, I highly advise against renting a car to drive outside of the city. Getting gas, emergency service, repairs - you do not want to deal with that. Either join a reputable travel agency tour for trips to out of the way places - OR simply get on a train and go Astana. You'll see a lot of the country. Kazakhs under 40 speak Kazakh, English, and Russian. It's part of the school curriculum. You can take a taxi to METEO, the skating rink about Almaty. You can stay in a mountain resort hotel - Lesnaya Skazka. In general, you can just wander around Almaty and enjoy the warm weather. By November 15, there will for sure be snow there.

Thank you for this beautiful video. Almaty confirm the impression of a nice, clean and green city. The park on the top is agreable with the amusement facilities. Kazahstan is a big country offering some places of interest. The capital of Astana is an "economic wonder". The Balhash lake and the Caspian Sea with two big cities Aktau and Atirau. I agree with you that the journey in this huge country is connected with stress. I think you have made a good choice staying at Almaty - the biggest city in the country and its former capital.

I thought this was going to be a short stay, but something is telling me you are starting to enjoy the ambiance with other things in mind to experience while you're there. I'm hoping you have a guide like in Baku wonderful person who took care of you while you were there, he really went out of his way.

A lot of money went into them. And most of it was stolen. In this very Almaty metro began to be built in 1988, and a measly seven stations opened only at the end of 2011! Construction was accompanied by corruption scandals, the last of which (the theft of five billion tenge) dates back to August of this year. And this is just the little that has come to light. My friend, a third world garbage dump is just a third world garbage dump and that’s it. There's nothing to admire there
