    Man, you will be like the father I never had. I started shooting in the beginning of this year - Tests for agencies - I knew I was growing but i got stuck because of the light. Thank you so much for your videos. I don't have $ to pay for courses but I have the strenght to never give up and you are helping!

    working in fire protection, this scares the hell out of me, but that said +1 for finding reasonably cheap solutions for temp lighting needs. Do not use 300watts in anything with low temp combustibility though.

    • @williambannierphotography2607
      @williambannierphotography2607 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree..... He even said earlier in the video those lamps weren't rated for 300W. A better solution would be LED lights. Much brighter with a much lower wattage and they run a LOT cooler. Yes, they are more expensive but they are a lot safer and may cost you less in the long run. They last longer and don't catch stuff on fire.

    As always, foam is the winner. The highlight roll-off is so gradual with it.

    Very innovative. I actually recently just made a soft box to shoot some commercial products for a friend. It cost me under $30 for 3 100w clip-on lamps, a cardboard box and some white muslin. The results are just as good as using a professional soft box without the suction on the wallet. My mate was astounded, although he was initially skeptical. Job Done. Thanks for the video. It's inspired me to transform the spare room into a studio.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gooner Goggles Cool! Be cautious about the amount of heat you are generating though, wouldn't want that cardboard to catch fire.

    • @preferredstock9338
      @preferredstock9338 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Slanted Lens The lights I used were actually LED globes but produced an equivalent amount of lumens as the standard 100w bulb. LED's tend to not emit too much heat and besides I had it against the muslin which is where the lights should be situated when creating a light box. my light box wasn't like the ones in the video. I have 3 lights, 2 on the side and one on top of the box. All I did was cut square holes that were later filled with white muslin. My commercial subject was placed at the base and inside the box with a seamless muslin backdrop. Too easy. Saved a friend a few hundred, maybe even thousands if he got a pro to do it.

    may sound exaggerated, but it is not. It is the most genius and most useful video I have ever seen on lighting. Because everybody is talking about key light, back light, fill light, and nobody is showing how to make lights.. I am going crazy on how to start shooting a short film without expensive light, LED dimmable lights, this light, aperture thingies.. i was going crazy on youtube watching how to connect/solder/wire two or more light bulb sockets together, and there, you solved the problem (12:45). I am not working for a client. I am doing film-making for myself, to make me happy..because it fulfills me.. this light setup is perfect for me..
    thank you so very much... can't say enough thanks for your efforts..

  • @PhilipLeMecano
    @PhilipLeMecano 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey JP, I just used your idea for the backdrop holder. Painted the piping with ceiling white mat paint to camouflage them. That work pretty well but I'll add something to the design. You need to put a layer of electrical tape ( white ! ) over the 1 inch metal pipe. Otherwise it's soo slippery that the paper roll just unroll itself on the ground ( it happened, not fun ). With the layer of electrical tape it's just sticky enough to prevent it to roll by itself but allow you to roll it in and out easily.
    Cheers and thanks for this idea it saved me quite a lot of money.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PhilipLeMecano That is an interesting idea, thank you for sharing. I usually use A-clamps to stop the paper or tube from rolling off.

    I enjoyed this - great enthusiasm.
    Great for starters - Good ideas about intensity of light and how to use it.
    For many of the negative comments before me I suggest those writers look at some of the more advanced vids - maybe there is something there for you.
    Maybe the frames built would be more durable for transporting but sadly too bulky to cart around. My kit is used at venues and offices so will stick to the purchased stuff.

    Hi. That was very instructive and inspiring. If people are looking for entry level lights, I would suggest the Yonguo YN300 Air - these thin LED panel lights go from Tungsten to Daylight, are small, but if you have three of them, you can get a good lighting set-up going.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video and very fun to watch. I like the advice for the backdrop, walls, and blinds. The lighting part though very fun to watch wasn't really well thought through. You even mention that in the end.
    I would advise just using the clamp lights and use harsh light in the beginning. Or bounce from walls and ceilings for softer light.

    I love Slanted Lens tutorials, but there are so many things wrong with these DIY lights. Obviously, there's no heat escape holes in any of them, but also consider that the plastic light sockets that are on those clamp lights are only rated for 60 watts, not 300. You would need a ceramic socket to safely accommodate those bulbs. These lights are safety hazards from top to bottom. The only way to make these designs safer is to use LED bulbs and make some air holes in the boxes.

    • @southernguy35
      @southernguy35 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actaully, when they catch fire the holes burned through then could be considered heat escape holes. Not sure I'd go for the Amazon blackout curtains. They're fairly cheap at Wally world now and very common.

    In regards to controlling the temperature of the light (cool shades with fluorescent and warm with incandescent), what would you recommend? Should I try to control it with the types of bulbs I buy or not bother and just take care of it post-processing?

    I use the same softbox concept, and you can control the light spilling from it buy painting latex primer on the inside of the styrofoam, then a spray adhesive once that dries, and finally applying the cheapest thinnest aluminum foil that you can buy at a dollar store or deals. it would also help to contain and direct some of the Heat... Of course, nowadays one could use LED lights.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a smart idea with the latex primer! But it's true- LED's work as well!
