4:46 "Who takes a photo like this?" *slowly walks out the room, grabs the camera, and deletes the exact same photo of a splash of paint on a wall* LMAO
Brother I can’t tell you how much this was worth to me! Seriously I’m sitting here in my car on break with my little shitty Yi M1 $400 camera with a Rokinon Cinema 24mm on it, feeling all the dejection in the world, and mind you I’m no spring chicken. I found myself thinking “what the hell am I doing?” You’re too old to want this or too poor to afford a camera with which you can do some real work...blah blah blah on and on. And then I watched this. Seriously man, this video nearly brought me to tears, not that I’m easily given to tears, but it was just a confluence of forces and timing. You literally just brought me out of an abyss my brother. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos and lessons. You do more good than maybe you know. Many many Thanks, William
I am a firm believer that skill or creativity is much more important than fancy equipment- don’t get me wrong nice equipment is great but if you give it to someone with no skills/creativity/eye for composition they won’t be able to do much with it. So don’t worry about your camera for now, just keep practicing!
Update: I took all your comments to heart....the kind ones that is. I kept rocking out with my Yi M1, working on my eye and composition. Something began to develop, slowly at times but sometimes in leaps and aha moments. That “shitty” little camera became my teacher and fostered in me a deeper love and respect for the art. I travelled with it and even did a few jobs with it. I am now using an EOS R and could not be happier with it. I am gradually building and refining my portfolio, and editing a short film and loving every moment of it. Funny thing is though: my favorite Photo was taken with my M1 😂. I’ve since gifted my niece with it and so her journey begins...but I miss my little Yi M1. Seriously speaking, thanks Peter, you rock brother and thank all of you for relating, for sharing and for all the encouragement. Stuff like this creates little pockets of awesome in this world.🙏🏽
I am an Afghan, studying in China with all TH-cam being blocked, still finding a way to watch Peter McKinnon's videos. You have given me immense amount of motivation since the first time I have watched your videos. If you could ever go to some hospitals and just randomly speak to the sick, i am sure they would recover faster due to the fact that you can make people smile. You are a blessing! Thank you for being here Pete!
I think it's kind of douchey. I live in New Jersey and it reminds me of something some North Jersey greaseball would commission lol. Don't get me wrong, the photos are beautiful in terms of technique and color and staging but the shoot itself? Not a fan.
im 50 now Peter. I started at 48. ...I hope I can do in 10 years what you did in 20+..with your tutorials and inspiration. ..If not then well Ill have fun trying.
You're 50!??? I'd think you were mid top late 30s, not 50! I hope to become a strong photographer/ cinematographer in the next few years too! I love knowing that we all start in the same place but can truly grow and break off from the pack with practice!
I’ve seen all of your videos I think and I gotta say, this is probably one of your most informative AND entertaining videos. This is really encouraging! (No offence). Thank you Peter.
Peter McKinnon Bought a t6i two years ago and thinking of upgrading soon. I’m still a “young punk kid” and I’ve been watching your channel regularly since I starting taking pictures. Definitely my favourite creator. Come up north to Sudbury sometime (300+ lakes)!!!
You know, I’ve been watching Pete’s vids for about two hours now. And I have to say...there’s something about Pete that makes you want to burst out of yourself and live your truest life. To break that ceramic mask that you wear everyday as a facade of “this is who I am”, but really is a prison for your creative soul. Beyond his amazing photography and video inspiration, watching a person live their lives completely uninhibited by the boxes of society is hypnotically intoxicating and wonderfully liberating. Thank you Pete, for making us listen to the drum beat of our calling inside all of us.
Peter’s worst photos are far superior than my best photos. What kind of self-roast it is? My goodness I should format my hard drive before someone sees my first photos (for the mankind)

Absolutely, and not even for paying him that much, but for like not expecting photos for free just because they are friends. He asked: "How much is that going to be?" and that's all that matters. Good on Bobby.
Thanks for this video, Pete. It was you who inspired me to get back to my camera and start shooting. It was this September and I was so motivated that I started instagram, already got a thousand of amazing subscribers and even a business contact! How amazing is that?! Thank you so much, man. Love everything you do for the people. Wish you a great year!
Wow, blast from the past! Even in your old photos, you could see your potential. It's awesome how you kept shooting Bobby over the years. The currents photos of him are SICK!!!👍📷
I think its quite simple, just look at how light is hitting Bobby and where the shadows are forming. For example, the first photo has 2 lights behind Bobby at around 45 degree angles, high above, pointing down.

I was watching the video and I didnt understand why were you saying that your old pictures are bad, i actually thought they were good. And then i saw the new ones. Damn im impressed!
Notice how he said Stock Photography wasn't booming yet back then. When you're the only guy who has a picture of autumn leafs online, everyone who wants autumn leafs has to buy yours. Now people have their choice out of 1000's pictures of leafs so you cannot possibly make that type of money with a picture like this. But when you're first to the market with a new product you can make money.
photos in my local photography group like this. I would never comment to discourage people, but I have seen many black and white/sepia watermarked images of dumpsters and brick walls and they make me cringe so hard! I will gladly admit to having an archive of images way too heavily edited with emo kid song lyrics photoshopped over the top they are so bad!!
Dude I'm into stock photography also and I'm telling you those photos even more than a decade back is waaay better than my best today. You are such an inspiration not only to the photography world but to all of us here.
Thank you for this. Just had a friend say my photography sucks simply because that’s what she heard from some random guy she met so I was feeling really down. Nice to know even pros used to get it wrong. Just have to keep working
Oh I've heard it too! Plenty of times. But just don't let that bring you down. Keep learning. Even Peter started from scratch and here he is. Probably we all can try and be somebody like him. All the best!
I love everything about this. I think it's amazing that 10 years later, you're still friends with your first paid gig. I recently started going through my photos from 7 years ago on my hard drive so I screamed when you said that back then you felt it was a great shot, because that's exactly how I felt when I saw my work. Now...I wish I could go back with what I know now and shoot it all over again. Thank you for sharing!
Thumbs up for not cleaning the grout :)
Haha!
I had a somewhat similar experience working at Rite Aid, but I was a little less forward with my resignation ;)

You can officially say you helped Peter McKinnon with his early career.
When Peter's worst photographs are actually better than your best photographs...
Hahahhahahahah, was thinking the same thing!
Just look where your comment is "located" in and you will laugh even more :))))))
You got the right one brother...👌👌👌...Ha haaaa

Now that's a great idea!!
I second this. I've seen a few of Peter's videos but, I just subscribed and was inspired by THIS video. Do it for me!

Ayyyy shouts out to worrying about your KD on Halo lol Good days
With that being said...what was your KD Pete???? LOL Minus 1.0 I'll be super disappointed!
Stock photo, 20 000$, Please Peter tell us more about that and is that possible now, can u make video about it??
SzT SzTechnology i can't imagine how he could earn this with only one photo like this.
P C agree
Notice how he said Stock Photography wasn't booming yet back then. When you're the only guy who has a picture of autumn leafs online, everyone who wants autumn leafs has to buy yours. Now people have their choice out of 1000's pictures of leafs so you cannot possibly make that type of money with a picture like this. But when you're first to the market with a new product you can make money.
over the course of time ...he said
that is insane lol
Bobby is a real friend in every sense of the word.........This video wa a real inspiration, thanks Pete
it would be cool that you remake this photos and make them cool photos !
I winced at the dumpster one because I had spent hours changing saturation on my dumpster “masterpieces”.
lol... thats funny.. i did the same with a telegraph pole :O)
photos in my local photography group like this. I would never comment to discourage people, but I have seen many black and white/sepia watermarked images of dumpsters and brick walls and they make me cringe so hard! I will gladly admit to having an archive of images way too heavily edited with emo kid song lyrics photoshopped over the top they are so bad!!
LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 clever reply
That was so refreshing, i loved that video, what a great friendship you two have, it's beautiful!
Dude I'm into stock photography also and I'm telling you those photos even more than a decade back is waaay better than my best today. You are such an inspiration not only to the photography world but to all of us here.
Well at this point of time his worst are my best ..
Same here🤧
WTF Pete, I WANT to be this BAD as you were.
same
same lol
Same lol
same :(
I feel shame
Same
Thank you for this.
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Two years later this advice and this video still hits me. Thank you!
This is what i call PURE MOTIVATION, thank you Sir !
"Everyone starts from some point to reach where they are now."
Wow!
Its funny, im 14, i love cardistry, skateboarding, and photography. I really hope i turn out like this mastermind someday
You have already - just figure out how you made it happen, & do those things.
Thank you for sharing!
his card deck skills are mad!
You should do a video about your favorite photos you’ve taken
Is no one going to mention his card skills at the end???
Card skills on another level... Didn't know his also good at it
the last 5 minutes of this video ist pure inspiration! thank you for that, peter!
