I just realised a few days ago: Stan's flaw was letting his heart overrule his head; Ford's flaw was letting his head overrule his heart.

They're Dipper/Mabel when they grow up; one over thinks and misses everything right in front of them, the other is very emotional and can miss the bigger picture. The parallels throughout the series are fantastic when you see them.

@@cousinpatsey2471 Only Stanley didn't make Stanford sacrifice anything for him, didn't almost get him killed cuz of his fantasies, didn't make him feel guilty for his dream and didn't cause an apocalypse without even apologising.

@@cybercriminal3110 no, Stanley only denied Ford's chance at a quality education, nearly got him killed by throwing him into the portal through other dimensions, and nearly let the apocalypse win because he couldn't not be an ass for 15 seconds.
BTW- the "Mabel is terrible" crowd is full of shitheads that couldn't interpret her any worse if they tried. Dont fall for their nonsense.

@@cousinpatsey2471 The fact is, he didn't mean it (except for not holding hands, but he sacrificed himself after, so it's ok). He didn't mean to break that thing and immediately regretted it. Mabel did EVERYTHING intentionally and it was Dipper (!) who apologised. Honestly Stanford and Mabel are more alike - they're both selfish.
I'm not falling for the crowd, I'm not even that into Gravity Falls fandom, and I don't hate Mabel. I just dislike her very much.

This situation is heartbreaking, and a brilliant illustration of sibling dynamics. Stanford can only trust his brother to hide this journal to prevent the end of the world, and thinks he’s being a selfish jerk. Stanley just wants to reconnect with his twin, and he thinks he’s being told to take a hike. Shakespeare would love this sort of tragic miscommunication.

Stanley may have inadvertently ruined Stanford’s chance to go to his dream school, but to be forever condemned even by his entire hometown? That’s too far. His parents should’ve just sent him to some reformatory school if they think he really needed to be straightened up, because they did more than abandon him. And what about Stanford? Maybe that Backupsmore University isn’t the best, but I thought his incredible potential meant he would qualify anywhere, unless some other schools caught wind of the incident. And if he was righteous, he wouldn’t stop thinking about his family along the way with his studies, regardless of how busy he is, unless deep down he knew what his parents did was too far. Besides, Stanley admitting his mistakes wouldn’t change anything, not just because it’s been so many years, so it isn’t any wonder he called Stanford selfish, Stanley can’t be called selfish if he genuinely did care about his brother in spite of the mistake.

I really like this fight. The way it’s portrayed isn’t about who’s the wrong and who’s right. It’s about who’s more justified, which is the conclusion each individual watcher can have, whether they are the same or differ. Some stand with Stanford, because of how he never obtained the apology from Stanley about his mess up that ruined Ford’s chances at getting into a great school (though he admittedly was able to achieve success due to his intellect). Then there’s Stan who just wanted to stay with his brother, and a single mistake quite literally damaged their relationship and ruined his life. And when the time came to reconnect, he was essentially told to take a hike and never come again. Honestly, both sides have compelling arguments, and that just makes watching them fight all the more interesting.

While I agree both the brothers have their own justifiable reasons for being mad at one another, I think Ford was more in the wrong majority of it.
Was it bad that Ford lost his chances to go to his dream school? Yes, of course. And sure if he really thought Stanley sabotaged him I get he'd be mad at first. But he never gave his brother really a chance to tell his side if the story. Sure, Stanley immediately mentioning the treasure hunting may have not been the smartest move, but he didn't deserved to get kicked out of the house. Plus, Ford's life still turned out pretty well up until meeting Bill. He still went to college, graduated with multiple doctorates, got God knows how much cash to study whatever wanted, and potentially could've became the most successful person on Earth. Meanwhile, Stanley was banned from numerous states in the US, was sent to prison multiple times, and had more enemies than friends or family to rely for help.
So basically what I'm saying is while Ford had justifiable reasons for being mad at Stan, he should've gotten over it before meeting him 10 years later. And the fact Ford was still pissed at him after spending 30 years of his own life trying to get his brother back? Petty and ungrateful.

The beauty of it is that its hard to side with either of them.
Stanford left his own brother behind for an ego and became careless towards to the 2 people that had helped him. Only to be mentally broken by his fears
Stanley became a jerk to his brother by sabotaging his project out of anger. Only to be financially broken and rejected by the people close him.

I can't just pick a side, because it's not an, "Oh! One's wrong, one's right!" type thing. Neither one of them is right nor wrong. They both have reasons to be upset at each other. They both made mistakes. I agree and disagree with both of them to certain extents. I just sit in the middle. I'm not fully on Stan's side, nor am I on Ford's. It's just one of those things where you can't choose.

You know, looking back Stanfords argument doesn't hold as much weight as it used to.
Was losing his dream school a major blow yes......Kinda of. However, think about it, it's not like it really stopped him. He still earned like 12 doctorates, graduated earlier than any normal person could, got an ass ton of money to study the stuff he wanted and probably made enough discoveries and inventions that just from the patents alone he'd be the richest man on the planet. Not even counting the number of awards he'd win, I mean the guy built an interdimensional portal for crying out loud.
Meanwhile Stanley, because his dad booted him out, basically became a giant wreck. Being banned in numerous states, getting arrested, having no money, no family or friends and basically being everything his family thought he would be in the end.
Does Ford have some justification to be mad yes, but of the two of them Stanley definitely has the high ground here.

Nikki yeah, and since the show takes place in 2012, that means the Pines twins were born in 1954 meaning that they'd have been 12, the current Pines children's age in 1966. I theorize that Shermy is the older brother by 6 years by the way and that the baby in A Tale of Two Stans was Dipper and Mabel's father. The older than six years has no evidence I admit, but it was the only way to put the baby at around half a year old that wasn't incredibly awkward.

    • @ds-dx3ks
      @ds-dx3ks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +262

Zarina A113 I don't think it was the fact that he lost out of his dream school, as he puts it, but the implications of his brother betraying him (which is what he sees it as from his point of view) that caused him to still feel a sense of resentment. If you think about it, Stanley was the only friend Stanford had. When Stanley broke his perpetual motion machine project (probably), Stanford saw it as selfish of Stanley. He always viewed Stanley as a person that would support him in whatever he endeavoured, but his trust was broken when he finds out Stanley has broken his project, which is admittedly selfish on Stanley's part. I think it's just that, the broken trust that continues to cause Stanford to feel betrayal and some resentment because/towards his brother. Just my take on it though.

    • @22Tesla
      @22Tesla 7 ปีที่แล้ว +160

True point, and Stan didn't exactly make his case any better. He didn't tell Ford he'd broken it, he wasn't remorseful hearing his twin had been denied entry into his dream school (trying to put a spin on it saying that this would mean treasure hunting for them), and he refers to it as a mistake. That just sounded weird! If I was Stan, I'd call it an accident, not a mistake. It sounds like he's saying, "It was a mistake that I broke his machine on purpose." While he was mad at what it would mean being left behind, he certainly didn't intend to break Ford's machine. If he had, he'd have smashed the machine, not just pounded the table. And he's horrified at what he did the second it breaks showing it was an accident.
Zarina A113 true but it just shows how even a perfect character isn't perfect. Ford has an insane intellect but he's no where near perfect. Shows how even a genius isn't perfect as we all believe them to be. They are people, like us. With flaws.

I won't deny anything you said, I just don't think they apply to this scene.

You've nailed it, trust me, it's not your take exclusively, many people think like that too. The problem isn't even the project or college itself, it's the fact that Stan betrayed Ford: he might not have destroyed the project on purpose, that's true, but sneaking inside the school at night to "yell at a project and hitting it", then cover his tracks and not telling him anything, and once confronted about it, shrugging it off, not apologizing or even showing any sign of guilt and telling him to do with him what HE wanted from the start with a huge happy smile, those are not accidents. To Ford, it felt like Stan had sabotaged him only because he couldn't handle the thought of Ford doing something different than they both did as kids and not having him there to rely on anymore, so when Stan does all of this to Ford, costing him his dreams and not even showing a pitch of remorse over it, showing happiness instead, felt to Ford like a huge betrayal, not just destroying his dreams, but the only stable relationship Ford ever had in his life. Of course Ford is pissed and resentful at Stan over this. Pitty that most people just think Ford is being petty and throwing a fit over nothing.

He's spent years making terrible life choices that drove him further and further down, and when he thinks he's getting a chance to reconcile with his estranged twin brother, it's only because Ford wants him to do something for him.
It's because Ford is extending his trust to Stan, sure, but he doesn't seem to get how Stan would realistically react to this. The real rift is because they grew up into two different people and couldn't overcome those differences.
Then Ford gets trapped in another dimension and Stan spends the next 30 years desperately trying to find a way to rescue him. It's a really compelling sibling tragedy and you really get invested in how they'll progress from here.

Ford mess up really bad. Ford was being paranoid. Due to the fact that he was using Stan to hide his journals instead of trying to reconcile with him, Ford was being stupid.

I think what always made Gravity Falls so good is how complex the characters are. And how everyone has reasons for doing the actions they commit as a result of it. Both Ford _and_ Stan have good points over everything they went through, but they both didn't deserve the fates they got: Stan living with guilt of losing his brother (and his family too after what happened) and Ford essentially thrown into different dimensions for YEARS.

i've been getting back into Gravity Falls recently, and lemme just say
watching this it DOES feel like Stanley had the harder life and that it was Ford's fault. bringing up the dream school thing, despite Stanford's obvious successes, doesn't feel very hard hitting. this scene hits a LOT harder if you read Journal 3, though, which shows just how paranoid and terrified Stanford had gotten. this man is running on NO sleep in this scene. while a lot of Stanford's issues could've been prevented if he hadn't taken the deal with Bill, almost the entire SHOW could've been prevented if Stanley had just told Stanford he accidentally broke the machine ASAP, which could've given him time to fix it. Gravity Falls is very much a show where almost everyone did SOMETHING wrong

Mabel:Some brother you are... you care about your dumb mysteries than your own family??? WELL YOU CAN HAVE THEM!!!

To me this scene shows just how shortsighted and narcissistic Ford can be. He literally just told Stan that his research could potentially destroy the world, but when Stan tried to burn the journal, Ford stopped him saying his research was too important, highlighting his narcissism as he prioritized his work over the entire world. Plus he could have just copied all the journals without the portal blueprints and destroyed the originals, showing Ford’s shortsightedness.

Imagine a version of the show where Stanford gets thrown into the portal, and his brother tries everything to get him back, but can't.
(Literally billions of fricking alternative dimensions to hop through.)
Stanford actually makes his way back on his own, and Stanley is there to meet him. But Stanford, doesn't care. It's been a long 30 or so years in those dimensions, and he barely made his way here. He appears somehow smarter than when he left, not nessecairly because of an intellect increase but more of the years have given him wisdom. His years of existence out there in who knows where, have caused him to think differently. He's a survivalist. And he cant count on anyone but himself.
    "Stanford! Stanford its you!"
"Oh great, I finally find a way out of that hellscape and the first person I see is the guy that got me stuck there in the first place."
"Wow, thats... deserved, but harsh. I'm just happy you're alive!"
"Yeah? Go be happy on someone else's time."
_stanford then proceeds to destroy the portal, after yet another fight, similar to their first._
"You should've done that years ago Stanley. Wasn't any reason to come looking for someone assumed dead anyway. Or at least you should've assumed me dead."
"What would you do that for?! That was my life's work! I tried Stanford I really tried, but I couldn't pinpoint your dimension. I couldn't save you."
"Yeah well, think about saving yourself. The horrors on that side of the universe, they want to find a way in this one. I dont quite understand how or why, but maybe you can. Find a way to protect the earth."
"Stanford, it can't have been that terrible could it? I spent years researching... I knew it was possibly terrible, there was this... extr-"
"Extra dimensional being shaped like a triangle, yeah I know. Had a few run ins with him. Didn't like me much, but then nobody ever did, or has. You got any alcohol around here?"
    "You- you met cypher?"
"Yeah I met cypher. Crazy son of a gun, insists on moving his own dimension to ours. As I said, save the earth Stanley. Anyway, where'd you say that alcohol was?"
"I didn't, and I'm not sure what you expect me to do."
"I told you, save the earth. And if you can't do it, I'll find a way to. People here never liked me, but that doesn't mean all of them are terrible. Mom and dad were alright people. Well, mom was anyway. She had issues, but everyone does. Is, is that a kid? Did you have kids while I was gone?"
"What? No! I mean, no. This is our great niece and nephew. I sort of forgot they were here for a minute."
"Huh. That's, different. Didn't take you as the family type."
"And just what is that supposed to mean?"
"You know exactly what it means. Hey kid, you got anything to defend yourself?"
    Dipper: "uuuuuuuh, not particularly..."
"Great, what kinda dimension doesn't arm their kids? Here take this crossbow."
*he tosses a crossbow at dipper.*
    "Stanford you cant jus-"
"Cant just what huh? You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into. It's coming sooner than you think, and if we cant stop it no one will."
"What's coming stan? You sound like a madman."
"Cypher. He wants a way out. I explained this... jeez, what kinda numbnut did you become? Spend a little bit of time in one dimension only and your brain goes to mush."
"Stanford, I'm still smarter than you. And frankly that was uncalled for."
"Whatever. Get those kids out of here. We need to get to planning."
"Not a hug, not a hello, not a glad to see you?"
"Stanley, you were the last person I wanted to see upon returning to this dimension. And frankly I dont care about out past issues. Right now it's about saving the world."
    "Alright..."
"Good. Now let's get to work."
