You know what I just noticed? If you watched the episode “Boss Mabel”, you’ll know that saying the word “Please” gives Stan a burn sensation. But in this episode in pure desperation, he said “Please” twice. Not only is that a nice small piece of personal growth, but I think because of how saying the word worked for him in that episode but he’s willing to say it here, I think that second “please” is what convinced Mabel not to push the button.

But the following line is a gut-punch at its finest: "I want to believe you, but...", those bubbles floating in the air that turn out to be her TEARS... the tearful and outright BROKEN tone of voice she says that line... the whole thing being about this poor little girl finding herself in a position where she doesn't know what to do or which voice she should listen to... good grief...

Jason did some incredible line deliveries throughout the show, but my absolute favorite has to be the scene before this one: "All this time... all this time, Stan had them?! I can't believe it! Was anything he said to us real?! Why would he have those journals?!". It's such a desperate frustration, especially when he kicks the desk right before that last sentence. He's been trying so hard to be logical- charitable, even, but in that moment every pretense gets thrown out the window. He just feels betrayed. That exact energy gets channeled in the "I don't even know who you are!" too. He did such a great job here

Mabel trusted him. But just imagine the fear Mabel felt, because she was right there, with the power to stop this all or let it continue. She has no idea what was going on, or what would happen. She might save something or ruin it all, maybe both. But she chose the believe the man who she was unsure of, who's real name she didn't know. Because he was pleading for her not to press it. In an earlier episode, he said saying please was hard for him. But now, Stan needed this machine to work, he wanted to bring back his brother so much, that he said please. And Mabel trusted him.

This scene is amazing not only because of the reveal, but also because of how deep Mabel's personality actually is.
Mabel had EVERY reason to distrust Stan, he kept lying and secrets through and through, and not only that, the machine couldn't have looked more of a death Machine, even Soos the naive sweet buffoon thought that Stan was full of crap.
But Mabel always want to see the best in people, she loves and trust Stan inconditionally.
She's terrified, she knows that Dipper could be right, that not pressing the button could be certain death, but her unbending willingness to trust the people close to her overcomes those insecurities.
That's what separates Mabel from the usual wacky characters from regular cartoons, she might be hilarious and throw amazing one-liners, but there's actually a character beneath everything.

What really gets me after finishing the show is that this might be the first time someone actually believed in Stan. His family thinks he sabotaged Ford's future on purpose when it was really an accident, he felt he had to con people just to survive (to the point he imitated his own brother for 30 years) and lied to Dipper and Mabel because he thought they would stop him getting his brother back. After years of no body trusting him, someone finally saw through him and that got him his brother back. I'm not crying, you're crying.

I’m obsessed with this scene. Yes, it’s cool, has great acting and emotions, great music, great stakes. For me, what made it what it is, is the climax of the conflict within Mabel. She had to be the one to press the button or not. The conflict of this episode was on her, and her “I trust you” moment was so powerful. Both Dipper and Stan had their own points, but it all came down to Mabel at the end of the countdown. Such great writing!

Just because you enjoy it does not mean you are the target audience. Yes, it's a fantastic show that deals with slightly 'mature' themes, but then, so was Avatar: The Last Airbender. He used to follow Stan’s orders unconditionally bc of how long he worked for him and his view of Stan as a father figure; he didn’t even question Stan’s orders to defend the vending machine, but as he grew close to Mabel and Dipper and then saw everything Stan really was lying about and that he was potentially a master criminal who could destroy the universe and Soos ultimately chose where his loyalty really belonged.. You know what i’m saying, Im just really happy for Soos. That quote at 1:20 was so powerful

I was waiting for someone to talk about Soos here. He clearly was also experiencing a lot of emotions right now and his loyalties were challenged. But rather than denying all the seemingly damning evidence about Stan, he chose to protect the kids. He did the right thing, even if it was good the button wasn't pressed in the end.

This scene taught me something very important.
All throughout it, I thought Stan would say the words "I'm begging you!".
It seems like such an obvious expression anyone would use in a desperate situation like this.
After enjoying the scene I began to wonder why the writers didn't have Stan use this phrase.
Then I realized...he did "use" it. He was already begging Mabel to not press the button, so he didn't need to state the obvious.
And that's when I realized that great writing is having characters say anything but the obvious.

    • @stormichow5325

This is a scene I can't watch without crying. To see Mabel, the biggest bundle of energy and innocence in the whole show, break down in tears and finding herself in a position where she doesn't know what she should do or which voice she should listen to, is heartrending in a way words just can't describe.
Each character involved gets a moment. Dipper, the most vocal about his newfound distrust in his own grunkle, in that visceral, betrayed: "I don't even know who you ARE!". Mabel begins crying at this whole situation, and, oh my God, when she says: "I don't even know if you're my grunkle! I want to believe you, but...!", you begin crying as well. This poor kid is finding herself torn between logic and feeling, every move could be the last. Even goofy ol' Soos gets a moment of his own when he's willing to fight the man who has been a fatherly figure to him to protect the twins.
But the gut-punch comes with Stan. Even worse with what we find out about him in the following episode. The heartbreak in his voice and face when he asks Mabel: "You really think I'm a bad guy?!" is on par with Simba crying for help next to Mufasa's body in terms of sheer emotional weight. He already went through the heartache of being treated as if he *was* the bad guy, and before meeting the twins, he was pretty much ALONE. He had NOTHING and NO ONE. The life he knew was but a fading memory, the brother he once was close-knit to now utterly despises him and when he brings him back he doesn't even bother thanking him. And now, he's genuinely fearing that history is repeating itself, that it will happen all over again and that he'll go back to being utterly, hopelessly alone. 'You really think I'm a bad guy?!", just wtiting this line down is enough for me to cry a river. Dipper & Mabel are all he has left, and now, he's on the verge of losing THEM too and being left with nothing and no one. It's a gut-punch at its finest.

Every show that ends on its own terms has a moment that perfectly sets the ball rolling towards its conclusion. For Avatar, it was the Day of Black Sun and Zuko becoming a good guy. For Adventure Time, it was the introduction of Fern and the Islands/Elements miniseries. For Gravity Falls, it was Not What He Seems and the introduction of Ford. Three perfect examples of shows heading into the final stretch.

Out of all of Gravity Falls this was the best scenes this was my favourite one because Mabel actually shows how much she cares for everyone around her and how she still tries to trust Grunkle Stan on whether he's lying to them or not. Some people get mad at Mabel for trusting Stan, surprisingly. It's really a stalemate moment, imo, but here's my defense for Mabel: Stan might not be a good person, but he's not screwed up. Why would he want to end the whole world? What's the benefit? Even if it did end the world, deep down I'd believe it was an accident. It's just weird, even for him.
Stan may be a routine liar, but he also has the capacity for telling unrelenting truths. _"You're gonna hear some bad things about me... and some of them are true!"_

Something that I never noticed was brilliant about this scene is that while Stan could have gone into detail and revealed his past an episode early to Dipper, it still wouldn’t have changed the situation. Dipper still would have had to trust him that the Tale of Two Stans was the truth which would be hard for Dipper because he is already so paranoid and has already came to his conclusion based on the facts, and as much as he may love Stan he knows that Stan is nothing if not a professional con artist known for lying and he was lying about the waste and the secret lab and even lied about how much he’s known about Gravity Falls, making any excuse Stan could give highly speculative at best. Not to mention that the book literally spells out that if the machine is activated the world will end and so even if Stan’s excuse seemed believable, for Dipper the stakes are literally life and death with not just his life but every person in the world’s life at stake and thus it’s a lot to ask for Dipper to hinge the fate of the world on the slight chance this professional con artist is actually telling the truth. The writers really did a good job putting the audience and these characters in such a difficult spot where it really is just a matter of trust whether to believe Stan, and where no answer he could give these kids would help even if the countdown wasn’t almost out and he had time to explain. It’s really a testament to the creators and writers who brought this to life

If you watch the DVD commentaries for the show, Alex Hirsch occasionally mentions how he feels like a bad voice actor, but the delivery on Stan's "You really think I'm a bad guy?" 2:00 is fucking killer. Stan doesn't have the time to explain his reasoning here and just goes straight for the feelings, and its heartbreaking watching him plead to Mabel that his love for them this whole summer was genuine.

Honestly, I could easily see kid me doing stuff like this, especially if I'm choosing over an adult. And even if the outcome will be bad.
