My dad had a pretty good solution to the collection problem: Put the season 6 Homer head on display away from the rest of the boxes. We almost always had a Simpsons DVD in some player so the collection was never fully together anyways, so the Homer head just lived on the mantle. Either because of that or just because dad liked season 6 more than the others we used those discs like crazy lol.

What’s really sad is companies would NEVER EVER offer some sort of a free replacement like that alternative box today. Companies do nothing for consumers anymore.
I can remember going into a HMV store in the mid 00's and seeing this weird Homer Simpson plastic head on the shelve, and thinking that it looked so out of place
It wasn't the first time there had been odd, gimmicky packaging for a DVD like that. The main issue for me was that it came after 5 seasons had already been released in a packaging style that had been pretty consistent up to that point.
I actually really liked that they tried to "improve" on the box. I always do enjoy an attempt at innovation, shame this didn't sit well with fans edit: and also how they handled it
I have mixed feelings on it. On the one hand, "collector's" cases are generally pretty cool. But it's at the sacrifice of uniformity and even shelf space in some cases.
I think the problem is not that there's a head, but that the ones before did not have heads. In a collection people prefer if all the boxes have the same style. It's the same with books. People usualy prefer to have a trilogy or larger collection in the same style. It's annoying when you collect a book series or dvd series, and there is this random style change along the road. It's fine if they released both the box and the head, and collectors could very well want both versions for 2 different types of collections. But if you already invested your money in all seasons prior, you rather not have 1 dvd box sick out like that even if the idea of the head box is a fun one.
They should've provided special boxes for 01-05 to buy separately after the S06 fiasco. Never had that whole problem tho, I stopped collecting after the Simpsons lost their real greatness. So I only own the first four seasons.
Yes I remember this as I was buying these when they were being released. I remember being so confused as to why they would do this. If I recall they were offering the alternative cardboard box for free back then and I got it and threw away the homer head.
I actually really like the head cases they are unique even if the plastic is cheap. If i was a fan of the Simpsons back when they were coming out i would have probably tried to collect both versions.
One of my many pet peeves is if there is a slight difference in a DVD collection. Especially when there is ONE box that decides to to change the font or something
For me, the worst cases (no pun intended) are Adventure Time: Distant Lands breaking from a similar character head design (but done well) for a typical poster look (but this can be remedied by getting the Region B cases for seasons 8 and 9, while 8, 9 and 10 were combined into one case in North America) but more egregious is Star Wars' steelbooks. It started with The Clone Wars' pilot movie. An iconic character (In this case Captain Rex) off to the side on a black background. This was started by WB in 2008. Miraculously, this design carried over to the main 6 films' steelbook blu-ray releases when Fox still had the distribution rights in about 2014. Maybe Disney had some involvement. MIRACULOUSLY AGAIN, Disney KEPT THIS DESIGN GOING for The Force Awakens' steebook. So that's 8 films distributed by 3 companies over 7 years sharing the same design. Then Rogue One changed it, and since then, every Star Wars steelbook has looked completely different. At least the sequel trilogy has similar spines and 8 and 9 share modifications of their theatrical posters. I haven't looked into whether the Mando and Kenobi cases' spines share anything with each other or the first 8 steelbooks.
8:15 Not that I shouldn't have expected it from a Simpsons enthusiast, but the disarmingly honest self-awareness about the role of collectors in the market killed me.

I bought the original Season 6 DVD used for like, $4. I found out about this controversy because I actually got the paper still in it with the hilariously snarky option to order a classic box.
I actually wish they remake season 20 to fit in with the rest! I don’t actually own it but was told it didn’t have all the usual special features you normally get too?
If I remember correctly, season 20 box set came out fairly quickly after the season completed. At the time I was collecting the Simpson box set. I remember going to FYE the night before the box set was supposed to be released, and seeing it in the shelves. I got really excited that I might get is a day before I was supposed too. Apparently their register wouldn’t allow them to sell it one day early so I had to come back the next day.
It’s that smugness which goes over as well as making fun of Jim Ross’s bell’s palsy. Completely tone deaf and one they should have shut their mouths about. The people who wrote that leaflet in the DVD case and the ones managing the website, not the people who has a problem with the DVD case.
"Will seasons 21 and onward get physical releases?" Does anyone honestly watch any of the seasons past season 20? I don't even consider the show to be running anymore. Classic Simpsons seasons are gold, but the new stuff is garbage.

We had the entire DVD collection from Season 1 to about Season 12 or 13. I used to watch them every Saturday morning as a kid. I remember reading through the booklet that came in the box showing the list and description of all episodes to see which disc I should put in (mostly was just hoping for a tree house of horror episode to be there) and I even remember those little scenes that played in the menu screen which showcased events and characters relevant to the episodes found on the disc. Thank you for this nostalgia trip.
As cool as it would be to have every season on DVD. I don’t see myself ever watching anything past season nine or ten. That’s when the show took a serious nosedive in my opinion.
A few years back I decided to search for the season 6 replacement box on eBay and I got it a (IMO) non-ripoff price! It was a flat piece of cardboard that I had to partially assemble, and the plastic DVD holder from the Homer head fit perfectly, sliding from the top of the open box. Glad to see I didn't give out personal details in the process!
I remember filling out that webform to get the "normal" season 6 box. I found the condescending questions pretty funny and was hoping you'd mention them. I'm a little disappointed but not at all surprised that there were some fans who took offense to that.
This is exactly how I feel about The JoJos Bizarre adventure dvds… The part 5 Blu-ray completely changed the boxes and color schemes of the collection. Same price much less in the box, lower quality case and instead of interesting sketches and storyboard art we got clip art from the anime we just watched! Not even pages from the manga etc!
I love how they made you feel like an ass for not liking the stupid new packaging, then outed your information to possible weirdos. I love the Spyro music in the background.
Kind of sad that we won't be having these types of issues anymore. Now that most forms of entertainment are streamed or digital or pirated, dvds have become redundant unless you just have a lot of money to spend and love collecting dvd cases.
I'd bet good money they're holding out on the series ending, and then they'll just release a complete box (maybe 2 volumes, split at season 1-20 and 21+) set and be done with it.
It's always fun to see similarities between different kinds of collectors. I collect Video Games, many people on TH-cam as well as myself have complained about bad design when it comes to the box art though I don't think there are many cases as bad as this one. Great video!
I called that number back when it was relevant. I mostly remember the line "Now to get your scam... ohhh, why do I keep saying that word?" So they probably knew what they were doing at the time.
I remember that gap where we never thought we would get any of the seasons between 17 and 20, and the long period without season 19. I would check online and in stores on the regular for updates just on the hope.
I was reading the One Piece manga and they actually had a collaboration with Where's Waldo in the issue released a few weeks ago. They even incorporated One Piece characters into it - for example, Bon Clay was disguised as a fake Waldo. So much fun. 😁

My dad had a pretty good solution to the collection problem:
Put the season 6 Homer head on display away from the rest of the boxes.
We almost always had a Simpsons DVD in some player so the collection was never fully together anyways, so the Homer head just lived on the mantle. Either because of that or just because dad liked season 6 more than the others we used those discs like crazy lol.
I have many collector's box DVD sets that are in special themed shaped cases. I even have the Star Trek set that's the whole USS Enterprise .Also Season 6 has a slipcase release. People love to bitch about something that is completely a non-issue.

I worked at a used DVD/CD/Vinyl/video game store from 2015-2020. I know the pain of this particular box set sticking out on the rack all too well. It used to frustrate me to no end whenever organizing the shelves it was on.
Just a story of when season 11 released in Australia with the new packaging. It released in November 2008 when the weather starts to get hotter. So alot of sets had the glue melt onto the discs. I remember taking mine back and offered a replacement which also had glue all over the discs. The store ended up going through multiple season 11's to give me the 4 discs.
One time - because i pulled out the discs the wrong way and got glue on them .. the store fave me a Simpsons dvd !! ( in regular case-ing.)
Imagine getting a Simpsons DVD season 6 set for your birthday. It look horrendous, the phone number to replace the case doesn't work, and worst of all... all the discs except for the first just don't work and crash the entire DVD player. I actually loved the heads especially 6-9. Unfortunately they didn't include the clear plastic outer slip with 10 so mine remains sealed to this day.
It wasn't the first time there had been odd, gimmicky packaging for a DVD like that. The main issue for me was that it came after 5 seasons had already been released in a packaging style that had been pretty consistent up to that point.
DKQuagmire ur an OG nintendo fan
Yeah, i very nearly was put off shoplifting it.
I actually really liked that they tried to "improve" on the box. I always do enjoy an attempt at innovation, shame this didn't sit well with fans
edit: and also how they handled it
i've personally gone out of my way to collect ONLY the head shaped boxes from Season 6 forward. they are way cooler than the plain box version.
I actually like it myself one thing I hate about DVD box sets is shelf ware and this head shaped case has never had that issue before
I have mixed feelings on it.
Flimsy, cheap plastic means you're wrong about them being "much cooler"
They should've provided special boxes for 01-05 to buy separately after the S06 fiasco.
Never had that whole problem tho, I stopped collecting after the Simpsons lost their real greatness. So I only own the first four seasons.

I actually really like the head cases they are unique even if the plastic is cheap. If i was a fan of the Simpsons back when they were coming out i would have probably tried to collect both versions.
Yeah same but I prefer the other one
One of my many pet peeves is if there is a slight difference in a DVD collection. Especially when there is ONE box that decides to to change the font or something
For me, the worst cases (no pun intended) are Adventure Time: Distant Lands breaking from a similar character head design (but done well) for a typical poster look (but this can be remedied by getting the Region B cases for seasons 8 and 9, while 8, 9 and 10 were combined into one case in North America)
but more egregious is Star Wars' steelbooks.

Not that I shouldn't have expected it from a Simpsons enthusiast, but the disarmingly honest self-awareness about the role of collectors in the market killed me.
