    "When does nuisance light become a health hazard? Richard Stevens, a professor and cancer epidemiologist at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut, says light photons must hit the retina for biologic effects to occur. 'However, in an environment where there is much artificial light at night-such as Manhattan or Las Vegas-there is much more opportunity for exposure of the retina to photons that might disrupt circadian rhythm,' he says."

    Ok but can we talk about businesses? I never understood "security" lights when the store/business is closed. You're just wasting energy. Put in those motion sensor lights; boom, multiple problems solved. Uses less energy, doesn't pollute, and if someone does try to break it it'll be a helluva lot more noticeable when all of a sudden the lights turn on.

      What to do if you live in a light polution area? We can not see this in citties with naked eye. There is too many light polution and we do not have night time or dark stime without light polution. The only option is to travel in a place without light polution. This is our modern probelm. We did not have this problem 200 years ago.

    I've never seen the milky way :(
    I've stayed out till 3 am doing a star-trail photo in the mountains though. I picked a bad night, it was a half-moon. It was my first time doing astro photography or whatever. I was not happy with my picture but I had fun so it was worth it! :)

      Reptarsaurus takes a while watch more videos on it here , when I took a picture of the sky all that showed up was the moon even though their was 1000s of stars out that night, the sensor in the camera gets overwhelmed by the light of the moon compared to the stars around it, but you'll get it eventually 🙂

      Come to my place. I will show you the milky way. :'D

    • @awesomewinter3103
      @awesomewinter3103 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't see the milky way with the same clarity everywhere.
      In Europe, for example, you won't see it very well. Almost to the point, where you will not notice it, unless you know where it is. Same goes for the middle part of the US.
      In more northern regions like Scandinavia, Canada, North pole... you should be able to see the milky way pretty good. North pole is perfect for that, of course.
      The visibility scale I wrote down for northern regions is the same for southern regions.
      Of course if you use a telescope from an observatory, you will be able to see it from everywhere. This is my personal experience, by the way.
      As for pictures, you can take good pictures even at half moon. You just have to set exposure time/shutter speed for at least 20 seconds to get a good shot. I remember doing a project for school and the guys at the observatory where using 1-3 minutes of exposure time for the pictures. Also, a camera with a lot of MP doesn't always mean good for astro photography.
      What you could try is: take the photos you took and layer them on top of each other with a program, like...5 or 6 layers. That is if you can see anything even slightly dim on those photos. That's a normal practice with this type of photography. Maybe you're lucky and the photos will turn out to be more vivid.

    • @ReptarsaurusRex
      @ReptarsaurusRex 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AwesomeWinter Thanks for the tips! I don't think I will be able to travel to the North Pole anytime soon haha, especially at this time of year :P.
      I just looked back at my pictures and I might just be over-critical. I mean, they're boring to look at composition wise but you can clearly see all the stars. Red, blue, white, and a big purple one. Although that particular picture was at 10 sec. The startrail photos were at 30 sec and there had to be at least 50 layers
      Next time I go to the mountains I might stay up late and take more photos and try the layering trick you said to have them be more vivid.

    • @awesomewinter3103
      @awesomewinter3103 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reptarsaurus Well, given what you said, your photos are actually pretty good! :D
      I mean, if you can distinguish the stars on a photograph, that's already very well done!
      Yea, sure, experiment with it. You can even take photos in town, if you want. I did it once, didn't turn out to be that bad. Anyway, I wish you best of luck with the photographs, have fun with it!
      Oh and by the way, don't worry about the north pole. There aren't any penguins there and Santa is hiding like a pro. South pole is so much better in that regard. I mean....Penguins! What can possibly beat penguins.

    Jesus every place humans inhabit alters or destroys the habitats of other species, and light pollution is an extremely small part of it. And no one in their damn right mind leaves the lights on in the house when they go to sleep. It's the city lights that are really necessary for not just the regular people working night shifts, but also truck drivers without whom we can't have any shit in our lives. If the lights outside are too bright, get a curtain. Simple.
    Stop implying suggestions to not use night lights. The good far outweighs the bad.

    When you live in a port city, at a major choke point for shipping lanes, where 2 thirds of all ships pass through, the memory of the stars in the night sky will easily fade away and anything related to that can only be seen on the internet. The port works all day, in the mornings everyone works for long hours, and sleeps only for a little time. This is my life, and honestly, it is not hard to wonder what's outside.

    Even living outside of the one of the most northern major cities (Edmonton) in north america it is rare for me to see the northern lights even in the dead of winter when its dark from 5-6pm and 8-9am. I'm only 20 but remember seeing the Aurora Borealis much more often and significantly more vividly. It saddens me, its so beautiful, it often makes me wish I lived further from major populations so I could enjoy the nature beauty more.

    I don't use night lights, not particularly bothered by the dark and it's quite amusing to use natural night vision.
    More importantly what can be done about street lights and such? We're well past the point of being able to have them turn on by proximity or something in the dead of night so we can have them off most of the time, or making them less intense and such I imagine.

      I’m planning to move to a national park in my province to be on a farm. The only thing you can do there is own a couple of horses and just live there because all of the trees belong to the animals. Well, so does your house since the foxes don’t care if they are near a house or not.

    I have always thought and wanted no artificial light as I would like a true view of the night but that doesn't mean we can't have torches :) but I would love to see a future where street lighting is a thing of the past.

    Desperate for HELP with Light Polution in Joplin MO! We live just outside of town backed up to nothing but fields, trees, deer, turkys, and a variety of wildlife critters...New neighbours put up 50ft high STADIUM LIGHTS to light up not only the fields & woods, but Everyone's yards reaching 5 houses away. Our entire eco friendly way of life has been ruined, as it is now daytime 24/7 intruding into all our windows. The wildlife has disappeared, deer and turkey no longer even visit the feeders and salt licks we have on our fence line....I've posted several before and after pic on Facebook & am in desperate need of help. Wish I could add pics here.

    We have laws restricting light pollution in Hawaii because of lens flair on the telescopes up on the mountain. It's great to not have blinding white light at night. We only use LED and low pressure sodium. This is so that they can adjust for that specific bandwidth of light on the telescopes.

    What I don't understand is why office buildings leave their lights on all night. There's nobody in there, so why are they wasting energy and money?
    Also, why do cities blast the light from street lights onto people property? Why do the street lights illuminate people's yards? Can't they make the light more focused?
