Darren is easily my favorite part of the film his design was great and his arc was compelling, besides Loki he is the MCU villain with best character arc. I didn't get the hate for him.
He was my favorite part of the movie too, but for the opposite reasons. His design, while cool on paper, did not translate well to CGI. His face especially is so goofy and haphazardly pasted on that Mr. Electric from hit classic Sharkboy and Lavagirl isn't too far of a comparison. His arc wasn't an arc at all. It was a joke that the staff took seriously and it ended up making the character end up being nothing more than a punchline. With all that said, a massive improvement over his time as the Yellow jacket. I prefer this tremendous clusterfuck of a villain over Jeff Bezos's evil twin.
MODOK doesn't even feel like it's the same character as Darren. Same actor, same voice, and still evil, but I find it hard to believe that, even after his crippling defeat in Ant Man 1, Darren would willingly become the servant to Kang. Darren was resentful of Hank, and felt that he had moved on from having to be mentored -- and, in fact, he was pretty damn smart to have reverse engineered Hank's work to make the YellowJacket suit. And while he was kind of a flat, bland kind of evil, he never came across as a joke in the first Ant Man movie -- so to have him turned into comic relief feels jarring. Plus, the intrinsic goofiness of MODOK aside, it's quite possible to make something as silly as MODOK into something serious and dramatic. If the movie and its characters take something seriously, so do we as the audience. In the Marvel Avengers game, despite its flaws, it managed to make the idea of MODOK into something creepy and serious. The MCU, on the other hand, leaned hard into the silliness of the character, which is exhausting because 90% of recent MCU movies are already oversaturated in silliness.
The problem is Jeff Loveness didn't take MODOK seriously when he was writing the film. In fact, he was baffled with the idea of him being taken seriously, and instead treated him like a joke because of his design. I feel the MCU's leaning to self awareness has made it extremely cynical and disrespectful to the source material, at times feeling as if it hates the comics because it thinks it can do better than them.
I get that it could be hard to take a giant head seriously, but instead of making a joke of him they could've handled stuff in a different way: Similar to the comics, Darren was mutated on propouse by Kang to serve as a more useful henchman (adding more weight and meaning to his rebellion than "Im not a dick") Horribly disfigured, he tried to get along with his new "self" to not succumb to madness, at the point to forget who he actually was. Cassie helps him realize that in the end he still was Darren Cross or something like that. Ok, thats a lot exaggerate but I still wish they didn't play his death for laughs an gave him at least a moment of redemption to the eyes of his former mentor Hank 😅
I find so stupid Cassie who is clearly a nice person that wants to help everyone doesn't even try to promise Darren to restore him. They had the tech and the brains to do that and she just tells him to stop being a dick, completely unfazed by his tragic state.
I do not get why everyone is hating on this. IT WAS AWSOME! THE HUMOR! THE CHARACTERS! IT WAS A REFRESH! DARREN WAS AWSOME! EVEN THE REDEMPTION ARK! EVEN IF HE IS A BIG JOKE WASN'T M.O.D.O.K ALWAYS A JOKE?
I think his face should’ve looked disfigured/wrinkly from after he fought Ant-Man as Yellowjacket. Not only would that make him look more menacing, but also slightly more accurate to his comic look.
I don’t know what people were expecting with this. He’s a giant floating head who throws temper tantrums. Marvel is never one to back down on embracing the comic book oddities of their source material, so why shouldn’t their movies reflect on that? They’ve done it before so why shouldn’t they continue with it?
It irritates me knowing that Marvel can no longer be serious anymore because they think comedy is the secret ingredient to making profitable movies. This is what happens when you sell stuff to Disney.
The sad part is, when he's in the mask, he's actually pretty threatening. But when that mask comes off... sheesh.

At least the positive feature of his “mutation” is that Daren’s heart ❤️ likely grew three sizes in the end 💗.
I get that it could be hard to take a giant head seriously, but instead of making a joke of him they could've handled stuff in a different way:
Similar to the comics, Darren was mutated on propouse by Kang to serve as a more useful henchman (adding more weight and meaning to his rebellion than "Im not a dick")
Horribly disfigured, he tried to get along with his new "self" to not succumb to madness, at the point to forget who he actually was.
@@Movel0I think that relates to the fact that Darren tried to kill her and his dad years ago.
Funny thing is that this is basically the film in a nutshell.
M.O.D.O.K literally looks like Humpty Dumpty's evil cousin that came from the Shrek/Puss In Boots universe.
I prefer him in the first movie
I do not get why everyone is hating on this.
IT WAS AWSOME! THE HUMOR! THE CHARACTERS! IT WAS A REFRESH! DARREN WAS AWSOME! EVEN THE REDEMPTION ARK! EVEN IF HE IS A BIG JOKE WASN'T M.O.D.O.K ALWAYS A JOKE?
Oh, now I get it.
Darren Kross is a clever reference to DK mode from games in the 90s and early aughts.
Why does he look so much like Mr. Electric from Shark Boy and Lava Girl
Modok season two got canceled for this
I did not expect Darren under there, so that was a big surprise. Maybe a little bit of a let down but still an interesting twist.
Holy shit, that's big
This movie was basically a Sharkboy and Lavagirl sequel
I think his face should’ve looked disfigured/wrinkly from after he fought Ant-Man as Yellowjacket. Not only would that make him look more menacing, but also slightly more accurate to his comic look.
I don’t know what people were expecting with this. He’s a giant floating head who throws temper tantrums. Marvel is never one to back down on embracing the comic book oddities of their source material, so why shouldn’t their movies reflect on that? They’ve done it before so why shouldn’t they continue with it?
Its a giant head with tiny limbs. of course its gonna look funny, no good cgi can fix the fact that its funny looking
It irritates me knowing that Marvel can no longer be serious anymore because they think comedy is the secret ingredient to making profitable movies.
This is what happens when you sell stuff to Disney.
Comedy worked for shazam the first
Movie.
Comedy doesn't work for everybody.
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 That’s because it’s Shazam but still comic relief characters can or need to have their serious moments too.
@@enderethan144 picture batman
Being a comedy?
If you wanna count the adam west
Version or George Clooney version.
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 Adam west’s Batman is acceptable but definitely not George Clooney.
I mean in theory it makes sense that Darren would become MODOK
Or at least how he’d be M.O.D.O.K
0:37 it’s Mr. Electric!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
comics MODOK- has human face
MCU Darren Cross MODOK- has human face
thats wrong
I remember when shills are saying that this is the most accurate look of modok. Lmao!
3:00 my fav scene
I’m just known noticing modok is like darth Vader and kang is emperor palpatein
It ties all together, and also Tv series
I would honestly gave him scars and possibly a breathing mask or something to make him more threatening even under the mask
I really Don't know what anyone was expecting. Its MODOK! of course he was gonna look ridiculous. He's a giant floating head.
He legit looks like he's a baby in a high chair lmao.
looks like a masterpiece to me
No amount of Analyze Cubes is going to explain this design.
doesnt seem that bad to me. But they should have given him the thanos alien type face. Making him look human was a mistake...
“It’s never too late to stop being a dick”
Well, I’m keeping mine
People seem to forget that Modok is supposed to be a goofy looking villain
“Tell me what to be”😂😂😂😂😂
