What happened is bad, but this can happen even in Europe or America for sure.
I always carry a pepper spray with me whenever I travel long distances from the place I reside. I know a pepper spray alone is not enough to defend yourself when large mobs attack, but at least you get a small feeling/sense of safety.
My personal opinion is this couple should have done extensive research about the Dos & Donts before travelling to India, especially the Northern parts. Whatever has happened to them is absolutely terrible, beyond reprehensible and should NEVER happen to anybody, especially tourists.
P.S: A possible reason why the Indian police are incompetent/helpless is because the respective State government is responsible for law and order within a state, instead of the Central government. That explains why the police forces in some Indian states are competent, while some other states have an incompetent & corrupt police force. If there were an uniformity in police system, probably we would be having a much better law and order everywhere in India, especially in the rural parts of the country. Just my personal opinion.

Guys even China won't allow you to visit the TIBET region without a local guide. You have to stay in government-affiliated Hotels and even your Guide has to inform the local police about you, and everything you visit in a new city or town in the TIBET region.
Though this was a shameful incident for Indians and India also....but it could have been avoided.
I have seen the full video of this couple explaining about this incident on their TH-cam channel.
They made a major mistake,becoz in that video they countered with the same guys even in the daytime when they visited that particular spot to plan to put up a tent for the night.
They left that place in the evening but again came back to the same place where they encountered those guys a few hours back but in the dark.
If you found anything suspicious in the daytime then why did you choose to go to the same place in the dark?
They just thought that those uneducated horny village guys were curious creatures.
Even Indians dont feel safe while travelling from Jharkhand, Bihar, UP and some parts of Bengal also....by Train or by road.
Many people lost their language from trains while trains were crossing from these states...
Though I am not generalising, this is also a side of these states. People who are gonna offended by my comment will just try to save the image of their states rather than discussing the real problems which are giving shame to our Nation.

Camping in India is not safe.Epecially at such remote and backward places.Not sure why they did not opt for any hotel ? They must have done some research before this adventure.Its a sorry ordeal, but a bit of precautions would have saved it.
