    Hohner melodicas were developed from the mid 1950s and the first model, with button keyboard style, was introduced in 1958. They've made many classic models over time, and are still making instruments now.

    Some of the things to watch out for if you're buying a vintage model:
    1) They might be out of tune, and it's not always practical to tune an old melodica. You can do what I do and use a pitch corrector after recording, like Melodyne, or the free one on your workstation.
    2) Also, some old melodicas really stink, and you've got to wonder if its good for your lungs. Make sure you don't breathe in, or you'll inhale 50 years worth of dust and bacteria. The Claviola actually gives you another note when you breath in, like a mouth organ, but again, its not a feature I'm really keen on exploring.
    The Claviola really stands out as an interesting sound, flute like in timbre, with the ability to bend notes by putting fingers over the corresponding tubes. It was discontinued after several weeks, as it went out of tune under the heat of stage lights.
    One gem from this comparison is the Cassotto melodica. A cassotto is an inner chamber housing the reeds to give them a mellower, darker sound. This isn't just a gimmick, you can really hear the difference, a very characterful mellow tone. I used this instrument in the backing track too, because it blended well behind the other melodicas.
    The Melodica Alto is also a fav of mine. It has the classic look of a button melodica, as well as a solid full tone, which sounds good playing chords - quite rare for melodicas. Complex playing might be a bit tricky with the buttons, but I was surprised with what I could do with it.
    Which ones did you like best? Let me know in the comments!

    A really nice video! The Claviola is astonishing… It sounds halfway between a barrel organ and an electronic instrument ..and that circus/ fun fair weird and haunted vibe is really nice :) it feels like a scene of the movie "wings of desire" or a sarah moon exhibition.
    The Jubilee too, but the keys seem the noisiest of all of them !

    • @MelodicaWorld
      @MelodicaWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Davmm96 Quite true indeed! 😊
      But for some reason the claviola sounds slightly funnier, doesn't it? or... maybe it's because of the Sea shanty ..? and other jigs that make their effect of cheering the mood of workers and inviting to drink "the Glass of Beer" 😁🍻

    I had never heared of the Cassotto model before and it really stood out right away and probably my favorite of this review. I have also always been captured by the Claviola but always haven't been sure if they are worth the steep price.

    I won a cheap melodica as an award at the AWANA club at my neighbor's church.
    My little brothers called it the Vibrachord.
    I'm sure it's in my dad's basement somewhere, I've got to dig it out and see if I can entice Dad to get out the accordion and jam.

    Mein Sohn hat sich gerade eine für 2 Euro auf dem Flohmarkt erstanden. Die ist bestimmt schon einiges älter ist als ich. Ich hab leider nur Flöte gelernt, noch nie Melodica gespielt aber eben hat es schon geholfen schöne Töne zu erzeugen. Die Vielfältigkeit im Klang ist einfach unglaublich! Die Claviola kannte ich gar nicht, finde sie wundervoll. Hat etwas von Drehorgel mit Dudelsack gepaart, sehr genial! Toll gemachtes Video, da steckt viel können und Herz drin. Vielen Dank dafür!

    I have an old Alto. its lower 2 or 3 buttons are a bit sticky and you have to hit them a tad harder to get a note. I also have a Fire that I bought brand new the year it came out. it’s the only one I’ve played in public, using it in a tune or two with my old band, Snake Suspenderz.

    • @MelodicaWorld
      @MelodicaWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jrscisneros Yes, the most important thing is recording in a good environment. This recording was made with many absorbant sound panels nearby, which left me with a clean sound. I also use a high guality mic, the AKG C414. There's no EQ, just a little reverb from Logic Pro. I tried lots of reverbs until one really suited the melodica and the melody. maybe the thing that most people forget is the instrument has to be in tune!

    All of the ones with a traditional keyboard are meant pretty much to be used one handed, however the alto and soprano allow extended possibility to play two-handed (without sitting down, without a tube or a table). A shame there aren''t more melodicas that use the "button" keys.

      Keyboard melodicas are often played two-handed. I usually play with it vertically on my lap. Left hand at the top plays the accompaniment (from the back of the instrument); right hand at the bottom plays the melody. Some melodicas have buttons for a guitar strap allowing you to play two-handed standing up with it diagonally across your body.

    I like the cassotto, wish I could find one. And the Claviola, but I can't afford that even if I could find one, I'd trade my arms for one lol. Might be hard to play it at that point

    Hey man, not sure if Hohner is paying you or not, but strictly cause of your video, I just bought a Rasta style Hohner online. I own the piano 26 from "61", been looking for an upgrade. So thanks alot this video is sweet and ask Hohner for a peice of that action ✌🏽

    Hello! Great video. It catches my attention to know where they sell those static hoses since I can't find them anywhere :c

    nicely done! I wonder how big your melodica collection is lol. Please let me know if you made any duplicates of your wooden melodica. Would like to purchase one from you.

      Thanks, my collection isn't actually that big. Hohner lent me a load of the new melodicas to make the video! I'll definitely let you know if I make any more wooden melodicas :-)

    The first time I heard a Melodica I was instantly transported to a sidewalk cafe in Paris France. It has a very Perisian feel to it.
    Question, Is this the instrument that is used everytime I hear a french song?

      You probably hear a piano accordion most times. But there’s a melodica in the Amalie soundtrack…
