I Made My Own Melodica! Making a musical instrument

    When I started out on this quest to make this musical instrument, I had zero design or technical skills. The most I'd ever done was try to put a shelf up, and that didn't go well. So I made a long term plan. I started with an evening woodwork class, then I took some design lessons with an engineer, studied with an accordion maker, and watched a ton of youtube videos. I then spent a long time at the workshop making loads of mistakes while I was trying to figure it all out.
    I've had to combine a few technologies and methods to make this melodica, 3D printing, laser cutting, woodworking and metalworking. I'm no expert, but hopefully any makers out there will learn from my mistakes, and go on to make something better. What I've learned from this, is that with a bit of persistence, or desperation in my case, it is actually possible to achieve your goals however unrealistic they seem.

    The best Melodica channel by far. Everything is done to a very high standard, from the lessons series to your own wonderful playing and to top it off you now show how you made your own instrument. This truly is Melodica ‘World’.
    Thank you for all your hard work.....now back to practicing on the ‘Pink Peril’ as I have named my pink plastic Melodica.

    I'm thinking of buying my first melodica... I set my eyes on Yamaha P32D :)
    Then - I saw this video... during 1st minute I thought..." Oh, cool! I can make my own melodica too!"
    But after that - "No waaaay.... I'll go and buy my darling Yamaha :)".
    Great job!

It looks great, works great, sounds great, and you were so detailed in explaining not only your design process, but also your mistake/review/adjustment process, which is critical for someone to understand so that they can think critically about their own designs in the future. Thank you so much for sharing!

    Wow! Such a great craftsmanship and perfect instrument. This is exactly what a melodica should sound like. That sharp metallic overtone like in a harmonica combined with a warm full "wooden" body and base. To bad they don't make anything similar anymore.. Those plastics are OK but you can almost hear that they are resonating in plastic bodies.. this is refinement on the highest level !!!

    Interesting never-ending "Prelude in C major"-inspired background music. Is it improvised or algorithmic?

    • @MelodicaWorld
      @MelodicaWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well spotted! I wanted to play the C major prelude in the background, but it was far too short, as I had about 20 minutes to cover. So I tried making a very long (18 mins) intro to it. It's one section, repeated 3 and a half times, each time ending a tone higher, so going up a tone on each repeat. In the end I left the prelude out altogether!

    • @MelodicaWorld
      @MelodicaWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter, yes there was a ton of planning. I went with metal key tops for the look mainly. I didn’t want the whole thing to look like a big piece of wood! They’re nice to play, no different from any other material really. I’ve only played this live once so far. It was a cold evening outside and the keys were icy when I started. But I was playing in a hot environment, so it was just what I needed!

      Well spotted! I was playing a piece I made for the video on the piano, based on Bach’s prelude no.1.

    Absollutly amazing, beautyful and sounds better than the italian Victoria wooden melodica! Thank you for sharing and inspire us. I still searching models of melodica skeleton but nothing, so I decided to try with harmonica files. I'm pianist, composer and hobbist. I loved how this melodica works! Bravo!
