So every now and again throughout my life I'd try my hand at it in various ways only to ultimately feel sad because there's this sort of pretentiousness around music. It is usually very unwelcoming even in beginner videos. Watching TH-cam videos, taking lessons, all it usually does is tell me that I didn't get to start young and I'm uneducated so I don't deserve to play at all. I can tap away at work or sing little songs all I want but I'll never truly know how to play an instrument and I'll never truly understand music the way people who started young do. But this positiveness and cheerfulness about learning to play, about playing a cheap instrument, really lifted my spirits up. It's really a very interesting sound. Obviously there is no comparison between both, but a cheap melodica is ever a good option for those who's starting, like most of other musical instruments. Congrats for the video, you're awesome!
That Vibrandoneon is beautiful! Definitely a huge chunk of that cost goes into it being an example of craftsmanship, and of art really, as it usually is with high end traditional instruments! As far as raw sound goes, I could tell the difference between the two, and if I HAD to pick one, I prefer the sound of the Victoria. I had been wanting to try a melodica for the longest time, and, after watching this, I at least feel a LOT better about buying a cheaper one for now. Thank you for taking the time to make this!
Well, I just flunked the A/B test. Didn't see _that_ one coming. Glad to see that a cheap amazon instrument can give you results comparable to a high prestige traditional manufacturer sound. Also, plastic does not mold as easily.
Hey dood, I really love your videos, I decided to revisit my old D'luca melodica only to realize that it has oxidized on the inside and was no longer playable. So I got a new yamaha p25F. Anyway to get to the point. You really got me back into practicing and playing the melodica. I would love to see you make a video of recommending affordable melodicas for other people. As there aren't really any. And seeing as you have been doing this for a while. I would love to see you make a list of them. From the most affordable to the most expensive that you can buy
Luenam! That's a great idea. I was going to do some tutorials, but I'll do this first. I just checked out your channel. I love your music box videos. I just threw my punching kit out because my music box stopped working, but after watching your videos, I'm getting inspired again. I've used the music box in many compositions before. I even had an old vintage one, and got some guy (who did the same for Bjork) to make a plate with his machine so I could record my own composition. I sold it a few years ago. I recorded that one track: www.dewolfemusic.com/search.php?id=18105618&code=nO5mGa
@@MelodicaWorld thank you so much for seeing my channel and its great to see that we both inspired each other to start working back on old instruments. I didn't find a big difference between the two when listening, but I think that has a lot to do with the amazing skill of the person playing. This was a great video you made me subscribe.
@@MelodicaWorld but I just upgraded from a (generic?) Walther to a Suzuki M37c (I liked the keys and looks more than the ones on the Yamaha, I'm a picky maniac when it comes to keyboards, even on computers ;) ) and I'm in love :) (to me, playing an instrument is not only all about the sound and the music, it's also about the playing experience, so things like aesthetics and tactile are not trivial things) Did you try the wooden Suzuki (W32 or 37) ? If so, how would you compare the keys action vs the M37 ? Thanks :)
If I'm not mistakened, in a lot of countries the solfage names of notes are usually used instead of the letter names, such as in france, italy, spain, in the slavic countries, as well as china.
Have to say I was impressed by the sound of the cheaper Melodica, very impressive to be honest. Excellent vid and very well set out as a comparison. Many thanks for posting.
Just sitting relaxing, enjoying a nice video highlighting the differences, pros, and cons of a very cheap vs very expensive melodica when suddenly 10:36 hits and suddenly I've got Imaginary Places by Busdriver stuck in my head
I can definitely hear the difference, but I think I'd prefer playing the cheaper one? Less heavy and smaller, bigger keys and doesn't mold, seems like a winner for me. Of course if i were to become a melodica player i wouldn't look for the cheapest one on amazon though haha... Loved your narration and enthusiasm, great video!
Having just ordered a fairly cheap melodica for my son for Christmas, I was pleased to find this video recommended for me here (algorithms, no doubt). My musical ear can barely tell the difference between two that you showed, yes the expensive one looks beautiful but there would be no point getting it unless you are either a professional player, or you were a collector of rare instruments. Great video, thank you.
As a musician I can definitely appreciate really high-quality parts and workmanship, and the more expensive instruments are definitely a joy to play... But as you've mentioned, the number one factor in how an instrument performs is the musician. As far as the melodica comparison goes, initially I couldn't tell a difference between the two in the blind comparison, however the delightful duet you put together made it a bit more obvious, and honestly I like both of them. The cheaper one has a brighter sound and seemed like it was easier to play rapid sequences of notes, while the expensive one had a more mellow, balanced sound. Either way it really means that anybody could afford to try the instrument out, and I suppose that's the best part.
I was shocked at how good the cheap melodica sounded! I thought it would be chintzy, but it wasn't. I actually preferred the B blind tone, in fact! Wow. That's nothing against the top end one, obviously. Perhaps I'm just biased against accordion reeds. Fantastic video.
Wow, I just stumbled in here and was intrigued. Always liked the sound of an accordion(?). But what blew my mind was the duet part. I would love to see more of that!
Wow, I am so happy to have stumbled upon this channel! Your passion for your very distinctive instrument is infectious. I appreciate how even-handed you were in your comparison between the two instruments, and your playing at the end was beautiful.
Law of diminishing returns. A $3000 melodica isn't remotely near 300 times as nice as a $10 one. Also, $3000 gets you a pretty dang nice used accordion, and an accordion is at LEAST 100 times more versatile than a melodica. Yeah, I said it! Come at me! lol
This is the second video I've seen where the same musician plays against him/herself. I have no idea how the performances are synchronized. Are you wearing a hidden bluetooth earbud, maybe in the ear away from the camera?
Its a filming technique, where you film one person at a time and put it together in post production. A bluetooth earpiece would work, but this was mimed. I recorded it first, and then played along, much easier to get a clear sound for comparison
@@MelodicaWorld Ah, that was my other question--where were the mics? So you just played the recorded track for each take and then used only the video. No need for a hidden ear bud. Thanks!
The cool thing about learning to play the melodica is that one doesn't have to transpose the instrument-that is, play higher or lower based on its sounding pitch since it is not a transposable instrument. Every key is equivalent to one individual note, unlike a recorder flute which requires various combinations of open, closed and half-open holes to create notes or melodies. Of course, melodicas also have their own issues or disadvantages but they are a great way for beginners to start learning music; even non-pianists can learn to play the melodica in less than a month.😊
I'm a musician, and after watching several melodica videos, I got to wondering how much a melodica costs, and as I was scrolling with that in the back of my mind, your video came up. So, thank you for answering that question.
Watching at this at 3am in the middle of the US election because I can't sleep, and it's a whole mood! I've heard of melodicas of course, but I couldn't have told you how they work. I want one now! 😂
i’ve never really given much of a look towards the melodica, you play beautifully! what a great sounding instrument, I was quite surprised by how decent the cheap one sounded. great video quality and great playing!
I have a similarly priced 37 key melodica from Amazon, it's my first and only melodica, and lemmy tell you, it's worth way more than that for the amount of joy it has given me. I enjoy playing music when I use it, unlike when I play piano.
Wow the Vibrandoneon has a beautiful tone and you can see why the difference in price. Having said that the cheap plastic one wasn't bad for the price however if you're a musician like I am there's no comparison. I am cat sitting at my son's place over Easter and found his melodica in his studio today. I have never paid much attention to them before but as a pianist decided to have a go. In one hour I was hooked and have decided to buy one. Thanks for your inspiration I have just subscribed as I think I'm going to enjoy this instrument and was surprised at how many different tones I could get just from my breath.

I’m surprised how well the cheap one sounded compared to the expensive one
Yeah, its not bad!
Well, I just flunked the A/B test. Didn't see _that_ one coming. Glad to see that a cheap amazon instrument can give you results comparable to a high prestige traditional manufacturer sound.
Also, plastic does not mold as easily.
Woooow really nice video Daren!!, Didn’t know you were so into music, so cool -José
Hey José, so nice to hear from you! Are you well?
Another great video!
Toy vs Pro... really not that much difference! But then again you really know how to play!!
The P25's a great little instrument
@@MelodicaWorld thank you so much for seeing my channel and its great to see that we both inspired each other to start working back on old instruments. I loved that arrangement. very different from the music boxes i've listened to. I compose only for 30 note music boxes and I as ell have a music box VST for ableton that I use. I have composed songs that aren't really playable on a real music box as its impossible to do so. But I do love the sounds of them. As well music boxes, like melodicas. Arent really that noticed by the public so Im glad that you saw this comment and responded.
The 'real' one broke my heart, so plaintive and sweet and beautiful.
God you're so joyful, I love it ! Made me smile just seeing your enthusiasm
Happy to share the joy :-)
I didn't find a big difference between the two when listening, but I think that has a lot to do with the amazing skill of the person playing. This was a great video you made me subscribe.
I like the sound of both, to me they compliment each other quite nicely :)
But I can't get the expensive one because I already sold my car ^^
:-)
@@MelodicaWorld but I just upgraded from a (generic?) Walther to a Suzuki M37c (I liked the keys and looks more than the ones on the Yamaha, I'm a picky maniac when it comes to keyboards, even on computers ;) ) and I'm in love :) (to me, playing an instrument is not only all about the sound and the music, it's also about the playing experience, so things like aesthetics and tactile are not trivial things)
Did you try the wooden Suzuki (W32 or 37) ? If so, how would you compare the keys action vs the M37 ? Thanks :)
@@febed01 I also like the M37C, but I haven't tried the wooden one...
@@febed01 I haven't tried the wooden Suzuki, from what I can hear, there's no difference in the sound to the plastic ones...
If I'm not mistakened, in a lot of countries the solfage names of notes are usually used instead of the letter names, such as in france, italy, spain, in the slavic countries, as well as china.
Lol, it's $30 now, you drove up the price, man!
Oops, sorry :-)
Great comparison and priceless (double) performance!
Thanks Dylan!
Have to say I was impressed by the sound of the cheaper Melodica, very impressive to be honest.
Excellent vid and very well set out as a comparison.
Many thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!:-)
I had a lot of fun watching this with my family. Still relevant after 3 years.
Have you ever tried playing simple Melodies like the Ocarina of Time Melody I bet a lot of people would love seeing that video
I really like the video near the end where you play both instruments together, very creative and well done!
Thanks!
the fancy one sounds better but not 214 times better!
I feel like the cheaper one would work really good in Lo-Fi pop
I love your teachings. Thanks a lot.
Hey what is the brand of the cheap pink;one?
Thanks Salvador! It's called a Juvale in the UK, but the melodica has different names as well
I was shocked at how good the cheap melodica sounded! I thought it would be chintzy, but it wasn't. I actually preferred the B blind tone, in fact! Wow. That's nothing against the top end one, obviously. Perhaps I'm just biased against accordion reeds. Fantastic video.
I’m a guitarist but I’m a sucker for all instruments
Guitar and melodica can complement each other very nicely.
Wow, I just stumbled in here and was intrigued. Always liked the sound of an accordion(?). But what blew my mind was the duet part. I would love to see more of that!
At times I actually liked the cheap one more
Yes, they're both good :-)
Wow, I am so happy to have stumbled upon this channel! Your passion for your very distinctive instrument is infectious. I appreciate how even-handed you were in your comparison between the two instruments, and your playing at the end was beautiful.
Wow, thanks so much for your comments :-)
Is that a red Korg SV-1 with inverted keys behind you? So jealous! Lol
Lol, yes. I got it purely for its looks :-)
The chords in the Victoria sounds beautiful and clear, the voices bright and so clearly.
Chords are great on the more expensive instruments
Law of diminishing returns. A $3000 melodica isn't remotely near 300 times as nice as a $10 one. Also, $3000 gets you a pretty dang nice used accordion, and an accordion is at LEAST 100 times more versatile than a melodica. Yeah, I said it! Come at me! lol
@MelodicaWorld, I'm so glad you liked this! I was a bit worried the joking tone wouldn't carry! Peace, love, free-reed aerophones!
Great to hear that a musical person can make real music with any instrument!
Thanks a lot!
Isnt that expensive one just an Un-glorified accordion
Half an accordion!
I have played a lot of harmoniums but never on a melodica. Never thought you could moderate a sound of a melodica like the presenter! 🌹
Great video. Thank you very much!
You're welcome, glad you liked it!
Really cool production value and editing! Love the comparison :)
Thank you!
For the price of that rare super expensive melodica I rather get an accordion!
I'm a musician, and after watching several melodica videos, I got to wondering how much a melodica costs, and as I was scrolling with that in the back of my mind, your video came up. So, thank you for answering that question.
Glad I could help!
Who likes the cheaper one more?
I figured [SPOILER] was the cheaper, and I liked it more. The Vibrandoneon has a different kind of beauty, though.
Sounds the same to me.
My budget
Watching at this at 3am in the middle of the US election because I can't sleep, and it's a whole mood! I've heard of melodicas of course, but I couldn't have told you how they work. I want one now! 😂
Get one Ron!
Very nice video but I feel like he's planning something really bad when he stares off into the distance.
I was just counting in my head!!
i’ve never really given much of a look towards the melodica, you play beautifully! what a great sounding instrument, I was quite surprised by how decent the cheap one sounded. great video quality and great playing!
Jesus. That expensive one seems like a complete scam based on the blind test.
I have a similarly priced 37 key melodica from Amazon, it's my first and only melodica, and lemmy tell you, it's worth way more than that for the amount of joy it has given me. I enjoy playing music when I use it, unlike when I play piano.
They're such fun!
Yes, its a very special instrument isn't it? Great to hear you've decided to give the melodica a go.
Great job! Really loved the comparison, especially with different styles!
Thank for listening Nathan!
