- We mow stalks for bedding for our cattle over the winter!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I used to do that with a 520 John Deere gas and a brush hog boy you make it look easy
Should try a gas powered leaf blower to blow off equipment. Used to blow the combine off with an air compressor; the leaf blower is much faster and we can bring it anywhere.

Yea, I'm in Potosi Wi like Ryan and Travis. Weatherbug is saying 70% chance every day for about a week... We've had some massive flooding in the area so this isn't going to help. My uncle Gary's corn that hadn't been harvested yet at one of the farms was all flooded. :/ Feel bad for the farmers trying to get what they can done before the storms.

Have you ever considered planting rye for a cover crop and or feed for next year? Could do winter wheat for grain and use the straw as bedding too. Im just north of milwaukee and have not started harvesting yet because it keeps raining here

Spent a LOT of seat time over the years shredding cotton, sorghum, corn stalks, and pasture. Bout the most boring job there is IMHO.

Down here in Jalisco, México we have a grinder implement that breaks up corn stalk bales and we feed the ground up stocks to cattle. Makes for great fill-up feed.

Heey Ryan! I'm curious: Will you ask Krone if you can bale the fodder with the Krone V 180 XC? That would be a awesome video and you have the benefit of checking out how cutting up the fodder would be for soaking up the cow waste.

I have used a stock chopper on my cousins farm. Do you use the mower too get finer pieces for bedding vs using a chopper?

If the PTO guard IS functioning as designed, the chains are unneeded. If the guard is working properly, you can grab it with a hand while it is spinning and stop the guard's rotation while the PTO shaft continues to turn. In the winter if you have a long scarf wrapped around your neck and it some how gets tied around the spinning guard, it will stop the guard's rotation. If you are standing on the mower deck while it is running and your leg contacts the spinning shaft, either covered in long pants or exposed by shorts, the guard will stop spinning instantly. I have observed all these scenarios and many more all with no "safety chains". Far more important than the chains in insuring that the bearings at each end of the guards are properly lubricate and functioning properly. Instead of taking the mower back to Air-gun in the yard, use you hands and/or feet to push all the chaff of the top of the mower in the field. That way, you do not have it blowing of onto other motorists on he road and DO have if retained in the field as natural tilth. Carrying a broom on the tractor would be a good idea too. sdh in the Tobacco Valley of CT

When you plant corn or soybeans do you move left or right of last years rows to plant the new crop? On the farm I visit they told me that the computer guidance would move over to accomplish the situation I describeed. I guess one of the reason the move over is that they want to take advantage of the sub soilers they have on each of the 12 rows.
I use a leaf blower to clean my brushhog and tractor in the field and don't have the chaff or wead seed around to cause problems.

Another thing with using corn fodder vs. Bean fodder is the shear number of acres it would take to have a decent amount of bedding with beans

We always use chains on pto guards.
How many acres have you harvested Ryan?
You might find it handy to have a leaf lawn blower to blow off the bush hog out in the field. Would not make a big mess by the shop would be handy to keep the top of the combine clean also.
i used to chop stalks more cotton than corn either 630 or 50 john deere with 5 feet bush hog two rows at a time
My great grandpa said when he was young, they use to rake the bean stubble with horses and burn it. They thought bean stubble poisoned the dirt, funny you mentioned it....

Hi Ryan, I listened to your explanation several times about the PTO & Guards and still don't quite get it. What makes the guards spin at all? I agree it would better to have them spin then not, to give you a visual confirmation that the blades are spinning and to stay clear. Great video, the drones give us a great overall picture of what you are doing.

Hi Tucker,
They're shaped as they are to reduce erosion. Every wheel track and row in the field creates a small valley, increasing water infiltration and reducing runoff. These are called contours and were popular in the 80's.

As usual, the Rhino 4155 does a great job cutting stalks. The amount that clung to the top of the decks looked like it could have made a decent sized bale on its own. Any idea what you'll be using in the future to take down those annoying trees along Abing Road other than a couple of Stihls and a bottle of Tordon RTU? Thanks for the video, as always.

You should get a battery leaf blower and blow that in the field. Mom's don't like dust in the house.

Nope. It’s just fodder though so it doesn’t really matter. It’ll dry out eventually

I would imagine the corn stocks have organic matter and nutrients for the soil so I guess my question is how much money are you saving by bailing the stocks up versus leaving them in the field for fertilizer?
After being used as bedding , the corn stalks return to the field as manure . So it makes no difference.
They will be returned to the fields after the cows use them for bedding and bathroom. When they are spread the next time they will be even better for the soil. Not saving any money in the long run.
Even though your description says you educate the ones that don’t grow up with rural roots, I’d bet that 90% of your viewers are farmers or have rural roots. 😂

The problem with Taking soybean straw is the beans burn up so much organic matter and put very little back.

I choped cornstalks with a flail chopper & jd 60 that was the dirtiest job I've ever had

DO NOT USE BEAN STALKS! That s**t is dusty, super fine and does not work very well. Corn stalks look better too.

In the UK , it’s against the law to not have your PTO guards chained up, health n safety would have a field day if we did that
Well talking 2 different places. I run no guards. I snapped a PTO shaft before. Ya, it beat the hell out of the deck, but the 3 point saved from more damage. Even the new shaft i took the guards off. Doesnt fit the safty clamp on the inboard shaft incase the shearbolt fails. Either way, 2 different countries and different laws. UK is pretty ignorant compared to the US on quite a bit and the same for the US to UK.
