    I modified my auto SG9 XT with a 1 inch body lift, aluminum engine and diff bash plates, and cotton canvas seat covers. I replaced the 18 inch OEM magnesium alloy rims with 16 inch steel rims from the normally aspirated Forester models. This allowed me to fit high profile all terrain tires. The car will never be a substitute for a proper four wheel drive vehicle but will handle 90% of the roads that a Land-cruiser can handle and that’s good enough for me. I love the combination of power and versatility- it’s always fun to drive!

    There's still lots of offroad performance parts available off the shelf, just not as much as for 4wds. One day we'll get a locker! Currently available are bullbars, rear bars, sump & trans guards, clutch LSDs (almost as good as a locker), good low range (1.447), offroad specific gearbox builds, DCCD or 20kg centre diff (manual) or locking centre (auto), snorkels (plastic or stainless steel), proper engine tunes (not a chip like 4wds do. Tune is 100x better!) plus more.
    I love my Subies! I've done tracks that "real" 4wds couldn't, plus done it with greater comfort & safety!! :)

    I have a 2018 Forester and can’t find any good stiffer suspension setups. The only current option is to lower the car with stiffer springs and then add a lift kit to put the car back to stock height or a little taller than stock. Factory setup is way under spring for off-road.

    I love my Subaru off-roading in tights areas. I have a 1 ton diesel for the extreme stuff. As of just hitting the back country and hitting some lakes. I believe my Subaru is way more fun. #1 it fits all my gear. #2 it has the rack to store more stuff. #3 and the best reason it’s super cheap to go anywhere. If I take my diesel on a long haul, it’s $500 US dollars compared to around $170. Not to mention my I can get a full set of tires on the Subaru to one tire on my Diesel. Yes the Truck can go more off road places and haul a heavier load. That’s what it’s designed to do.

    Yeah I had my stock forester in a state forest track that was so steep I could not go up it in low range. It kept on stalling and eventually started to overheat. I was getting worried but it turns out if I just gun it in high range it chewed it up really good. I just had to take the top too fast for my liking cause you can’t see what’s on the other side of the berms.

      So do the WJs Which is fine and all for a main off road vehicle but if you're on the road allot the gas mileage of a Forester is worth what you give up off-road wise. Also unless you get like a Cherokee or something the storage is inferior on jeeps. I need it as a daily driver so for me the Forester has a slight edge but I was considering WJ grand Cherokees because you can find those cheap still but I find people take worse care of those jeeps and need more work initially than some of the old foresters I've seen. I can find clean rist free 2002 foresters around me with 119k or under miles still. Not so much on WJs

      Very true. The difference is that other 4x4s with IFS can simply get adjustable Upper Control Arms and diff lowering kits. I would love to see some aftermarket parts available to facilitate this (hard wothout fitting an actual front diff).
      I am sure some gear reduction kits wouldn't be too expensive to manufacture, considering the sizeable market for it. That would improve the low range issue immensely.
      A deisel engine would also help low range decents due to higher engine compression.

    Note that in South Australia, strut spacers (on top of coilovers) are not legal. The Forester is deemed a 4WD (it has MC on the compliance plate to verify this) so you can increase tyre diameter by up to 50mm vs tyre placard size, but that affects how much lift is legal as it cant be more than 50mm all up between tyre radius increase and suspension lift vs standard. Adjustable coilovers also need to engineering approval to be legal. Non legal mods dont just expose you to being defected by police, but can negate insurance coverage of your vehicle and 3rd party property damage

      Forester has been great! Had a few various issues with mods I’ve installed but a slight change in setup will see those fixed. Honestly I think the forester is such a versatile car. It’s like a jack of all trades and master of none. It does everything well. Small enough to park easily, big enough to carry stuff. Comfortable to daily and then capable enough to tackle some off-roading.

    Not to insult you, but Subarus aren't meant to be crazy rock crawlers. Most builds are just by weekend warriors who want to get to the trail head or fishing site. . As overlanders go it's all you need for a lot of things. Sure you will never be able to get 35s on it but will a 4runner ever be able to get 20mpg? These are compromises you need to consider before you do this. I am not saying you are totally wrong but what you're saying is like comparing a work truck to a work van. Also you could lock the center dif with a switch super easily and you could just weld the rear. I doubt you would break anything in the rear because you would hardly have wver power going to it

    If you want to get the best off road capability you will have to go with a Wrangler. They are body on frame with solid axles. Aftermarket modifications are limitless and you can set them up to be anything from an overland trail rig to a full blown rock crawler. TJ's manufactured '97-'06 are a good choice. Just get the 4.0 litre with a Dana 44 rear axle and 3.73 gear ratio and you will have the platform you need to build anything you want. Independent suspensions like on your Subaru and Toyota's and everything else for that matter are just inferior for off road applications. A solid axle front and rear has far better flex and will follow the terrain. They are stronger, easier to lift, can be modified with different gear ratios, lockers or limited slip options, stronger axles..........it's just superior in every way.

    • @ignitionoffroad5028
      @ignitionoffroad5028  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, if I want the most capable off-roader I would go something other than Subaru, however I'm in it for the fun, challenges and just to be different. Also if you have the most capable rig you won't learn as much as with something less capable. I think navigating a tricky obstacle in a Subaru that a modified jeep would just crawl over makes the Subaru driver a better driver. More stupid maybe, but still a better driver.

    You where blowing cv's in front not because if the height, you've upgraded now with lockers and low range. But you where blowing them due to majority front wheel drive/power in stock form and the shock load. What that means, you where raising a wheel at front and all drive went to that wheel, when that wheel touches ground again it shock loads your shaft, and the weakest point gives, your cv's. Happens in all IFS 4wd as well not just subarus. (Hence why your rears survived, as you know in stock form before you did centre diff, hardly any drive went to rear and just wasn't shock loading them shafts as much)
    Done many a cv's in my hilux until I installed a locker

    • @ignitionoffroad5028
      @ignitionoffroad5028  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shock loading certainly doesn’t help, combined with the added angles of steering and lift kit as well as cheap aftermarket boots and it’s a recipe for axles to brake. I’ve had a lot more luck after going back to OEM Subaru axles that seem to hold up a lot better.

    Nice video but to complain that the subaru is not or will never be a true off-road vehicle is pointless.
    You knew when you bought it that it's not designed for hard, extreme off-road. It's designed to offer you decent off road capabilities with BETTER gas mileage than a 4x4 vehicle. That's the trade off. Less capabilities for better gas mileage.
    If you want an off-road vehicle there's lots of options out there like Toyota Tacoma, 4 runner, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi pajero...
    I just feel it's unfair for you to criticize the Subaru because it wasn't designed to do what you're asking it to do. If you want more off-road capabilities buy a vehicle specifically designed for that. Your gas mileage will be shit but you'll have better off-road capabilities. Give and take man.
