    I consider myself a Subaru guy and I think your gripes are 100% well considered, respectfully put and completely legitimate. I also think it's great for Subaru to get feedback from a more Jeep-centric demographic because frankly there are way more things in common between the Jeep crowd and the Subie crowd than not and Subaru needs to hear about what needs to be improved upon. Thanks for your insights.

    Good video. I thought this was gonna be the typical complaints, but they actually were well thought out. By the numbers. 1). Yes, a rock rail OPTION or MOUNT would be nice, but I'm not losing sleep. 2). Assisted backup braking. The sensor has to be in the bumper, so anything in front of it will of course affect this. Perhaps moving your bike mounting solution will help with this. As long as there is a way to switch it off I don't see a problem. I also likely would only have my bike rack on when I was using it, not while commuting etc. so MOST of the time I'd have the advantages. 3). Heated Steering wheel. I've never had one so I won't miss it. But if I lived in cold climates I would probably want it. This is a head scratcher, because I think that they are STANDARD in the Canadian version, so it's not like they don't have the parts or the design. It is much like their assessment that Wilderness folks do not appreciate high end sound systems, because you can't option Harmon Kardon. Kind of annoying. 4). 110 outlet. Yes it would be nice. But, this is a small battery car, compared to a truck or bigger 4x4. 110 outlets tempt people to put bigger appliances. Personally I always put an isolated aux battery and Wire my own outlets. I wouldn't use a 110 outlet without amping up the electrical. Still I heard the alternator was pretty good on this car so maybe a beefed up electrical would be a very popular package for trekkers . 5). Buttons vs infotainment. Yeah, there should be buttons for basics. I think they were trying to save money there but it can be a p.i.t.a. Not a dealbreaker, but yeah. 6). Cameras. Yeah, I haven't got mine yet, but based on reviews, they could be a lot better. Jeep is better, the new Bronco is marvelous. I have heard that installing aux lights or higher lume lights will improve the picture in low light situations i,e, back up camera. No excuse Subaru. My PHONE camera is 8K. so I expect more for my $42K car 7). Tires, yea, I think Subaru was right here. You and I will get new wheels and tires as soon as possible but most will not. And also their MPG specs are based on the lighter more fuel friendly Geolanders which makes their crossover more competitive because nobody else is putting KO2's on their crossovers either. HOWEVER, the BIGGEST flaw of the Wilderness BAR NONE is the inability to put smaller wheels, and hence taller sidewalls, combined with a wheel well that cannot take a tire much taller than stock. One wants the option to have 15" wheels and 29's+" tires on this vehicle. You can do that on a Crosstrek with some mods, but not on the higher end wilderness because of the size of the Brake system. I like good brakes in a vehicle, but it would be nice to get at least another inch smaller if not two on the wheels, OR have enough extra wheel well for taller tires. Airing down is not nearly effective with smaller profiles. I think you MIGHT be able to add an inch in diameter without mods. 9).They DO offer key fob starting as an option in the 2022 Wilderness. I chose not to spend the money because I am going to use the phone app. I always have my phone with me and it can do more than just start the vehicle. It IS expensive however, and not standard. 10. Aux switches would have been awesome. Subaru, are you listening? This is their first year attempt at doing the mods we all have been doing FROM the factory. Hopefully they will do more as the Wilderness line evolves. 11). It sounds like a valve is not shutting properly on your heater. I haven't had that problem in previous Outbacks. I know it takes a while for the ducting to cool off because the Outbacks are fairly well insulated, but it sounds like your problem is more than just a cooldown issue. Try running the air cond. to cool the ducts, then switch on and off quickly to see if it is really fresh warm air or just warm ducting. Well done, I haven't got my Wilderness yet, but you made a lot of good points here. Databyter

      I have a 2020 outback xt and a 2021 crostrek sport. After both purchases I had buyers remorse wishing I got a 4runner or jeep... but everytime I think about trading in for one of those cars I am reminded that the subaru can do 70% of what I want and 100% of what I need. And 3 days ago I passed by a 4runner sport stuck in the snow. Because with the money I saved I got winter tires...
      A jeep or 4runner TRD can do 100% of what I want and 80% of what I need.

    As a recent owner, I find the infotainment system is great. The seat warmers are easily accessible, we have heated steering wheels in Canada that are controlled on the steering wheel with the pull of a toggle. It has a front facing camera, so tight parking spots become easily maneuverable. Even the sound system everyone is upset about for not being the upgraded model, is awesome quality. I hate weak speakers and the wilderness doesn’t disappoint

    Great video! I agree with many of your complaints, but for me they mostly just chalk up to areas for improvement, and not necessarily hate.
    For the AC/heat issue, try this: before turning off your heat, first adjust your temperature down to a lower/comfortable setting for a few seconds, and then turn the heat off. I’ve had this happen with other non-Subaru vehicles, and this technique seems to work.

      @@roamingwithjosh I may be late to the party, but I think Zach is spot-on. I think the Subaru climate control - at least in the Outback - is like old school manual mixer systems. If you have the heat on (any setting) and it isn't on recirculation, you're still going to get fresh air flowing through the heater core and heating up the cabin when you turn it off. It'd be nice if Subaru still let you adjust the temperature (like the old mixer sliders) even if the blower is off.

    I agree on the first point, we drove to Arizona near flagstaff and there are OHV trail (funny because I forgot to tell the GPS to use highways), and we ended up going through some crazy stuff, part of the road was missing, worried about no plates. Camera isn't that great, forward camera the same. I thought about this from an IT vendor perspective, they need the mfr of that camera to provide enough to cover 4-5 years of supply and "if we give them an "eh" camera, we can give them wireless CarPlay, etc." was probably the conversation somewhere in Japan. Btw, I believe (I haven't tried this) that even if the battery dies in the unit, pull out the key from the fob to open it. Then hold the fob to the circle, should still work. One feature I do like, which we used recently is going Kayaking, I disabled my key fob, threw it in my glove compartment and came back, press in a 5 digit code to get in my Subaru (I have the Onxy XT model, but sure the Wilderness has it. Welcome to the Subaru family! It's not perfect, agree with you on almost everything though.

    even though I am going to purchase a 2023 outback wilderness (3rd Subaru), I agree with your comments: 1. regarding the Aux. switches , Some of us would like to run alternative communications equipt. w/o hiring the install of wiring ETC. 2. the all in one control point for items on the dash can be a comfort /safety issue going down the highway. 3. Remote start a winter time must 4. the RAB ... when you are backing iin brush or tall grass, you almost have to have a weed whacker to back out (perhaps an ON/OFF switch) The feature has safety in mind in the city but maybe no so much on trails that you can only back out of... . 5. a 110vac inverter outlet is a must for anyone with extended travel and exploration in mind ..Yeah, I know this is a dated TH-cam show and the 2023 has a couple features that I didn't expect, IE: heated steering wheel ... not a big deal to me personally...I'd like to hear about the X mode, we do a bit of driving in red clay and rocky creek bottoms.

The Crosstrek has buttons and knobs for the heated seats snd the heater. So much better. The one thing that’s a major problem in the outback especially is if the seat belt isn’t fastened the radio turns off and when you stop the car and unfasten the seatbelt the buzzer goes off when u open the door. You have to sit the door and re open it again to get it to stop. Small item but I do a lot of birding in back country and am constantly getting in and out. As far as the points you made, I agree with all of them. They are concerns. Subaru, I hope you take notes to all of these concerns. The remote start on the key fob was actually the 1st thing I noticed that I did not like. Not having a heated steering wheel nor ventilated seats was another thing I gave up when I got rid of my Jeep. Subaru puts the Harman Kardon in some of their Outbacks. This should be an option to anyone that would pay to have it. The missing knobs... I agree, I miss them. It is a pain to have to go back to the Menu and start over just to do a 2nd thing. Canadian Wilderness Editions all have heated steering wheels I believe. Agree with you on the menu system for basic controls like heated seats and AC, it's super finicky and distracting. I don't think they should have put a more aggressive tire on however, for the reasons you stated. Even off-road pick up trucks come with relatively street oriented tires, so it wouldn't make sense for the OB to come with anything more than the Geolandars.

It’s positioned as Subarus most capable off-road vehicle, that said, most vehicles with that kind of position come with a meaty tire. Either way, I totally understand why they went with the geolanders and for most people that tire is more reasonable. Thanks for the input!

    Thanks for this review. I’m not one of your normal viewers I specifically picked this video because it said 10 things that you don’t like I’m already a huge fan boy of Subaru, but I was looking for honest opinions about things that were negative about it. I’m extremely grateful that I picked this video to listen to and agree with most everything you said the things I don’t agree with just don’t apply to me because I know nothing of rock crawling or really being out in the wilderness.
    Though I would say this, I think the Subaru wilderness is more of a Glamping vehicle than a real hard core wilderness person vehicle. It’s basically built for a lot of wannabes like me who mostly drive in the city, and every once in a while, might take it down some woods trail. Just one more thing as an aside you can tell the difference in our ages because I have never had a heating steering wheel and any car I owned though. I would like to try it as I get older I’m tired of a cold steering wheel however, I have never seen a need for any type of auto start for my vehicle though, I would not be adverse to the key fob version the cell phone version you described would totally irritate me. Thanks again for the video. Best wishes.

    Your number 10 heat coming out hot is the same on hyundai kona 2.0. It was the 1st car i noticed it on. The only fix is to switch the vent from allowing outside air to only allowing cabin air. I don’t think it’s the engine running hot as much as the way the air is circulated. The same thing actually occurs with the AC in the kona.

    I absolutely loved my 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness (very safe, totaled in an accident that would have caused serious injuries & walked away unhurt).
    Still, everything you mention is true & buyers should be aware. Let me add that the premium Harman Kardon sound system isn’t available with the Wilderness & if that’s important to you, the difference is big. Mine was installed after market but why that was necessary is beyond me.

    I'm a 2013 Outback owner and I like mine, I also think these are good criticisms, and I hope Subaru hears them. I'm not really convinced that Subaru is positioning this vehicle the way you are stating, it seems more incremental to me, like a small step in that direction. There are also multiple shades between rock crawler and outdoorsy station wagon. Specifics: I'm pretty sure nobody's backup camera knows about some rando rack the owner put on the back. I'm with you on the fob starter. And bad computer screens/interfaces. Feature I like: it seems this model handles steeper climbs better without slipping, or so I've seen. Suggestion I like: keep some of the basic features like starting the car mechanical vs. app. I love smart tech, but it doesn't have to totally replace everything.

    Cameras - Subaru probably sourced a single supplier for them ages ago, put them through an insanely rigorous validation process and haven't seen enough of a business case to source new hardware. Sure, it's lower image quality, but it would have proven better longevity over something higher image quality at a similar or even higher cost. Fuji and Toyota will generally give up some headroom on having cutting edge stuff in favor of longer lasting stuff.
    Heat - just set the HVAC to auto and let it ride. Bump the temp up or down a couple degrees (since that's one of the few physical controls left) as needed and let the system regulate the interior temps.

I’m not just being dramatic, I had to get out of the car several times to make sure I had the right line. I don’t mind jumping in and out, it’s just frustrating because Subaru had to know that the camera isn’t actually functional in real situations. I've always left it on "Auto" and adjusted the temperature itself. Say, I want it 60 I set it to 60. I want hot, I change it to 85. Maybe if you are talking leaving it at 85 and turning the heat off, but leaving the Outside Air/Recirculate thing set to Outside Air and you get a warm breeze. Though that happens in every car I've driven. Now, you want a car stuck on hot, my 88 Jeep Wrangler has a gentle warm breeze coming out of it all the time when the fans are powered off. Just gives me a good reason to leave the top off all Summer. :)

    As a somewhat experienced Subaru modifier I can solidly say you are going to regret the crap out of those K02’s unless your hearing is already significantly impaired - the road noise is absolutely insane, enough to give a lot of people a headache after a couple of hours on a highway. The better choice for experienced Subaru modifiers would be the Falken AT/3. Considerably less road noise and a better compromise of a tire all around. Oh and for the winter - that k02 gets hard as rock in the cold and slides all over the ice. The Falken has soft winter rubber mixed in too. I hope others read this before making the some mistake I did in trusting an online reviewer/builder who didn’t have the real world experience with previous subarus.

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure if you’re directly implying me or other “reviewer/builder” but what I do have experience with are BFG ko2’s. I make it very clear that I come from the world of jeep, so road noise is a much different term. That said, if you get a headache from 2 hours of driving on ko2’s then I would suggest just keeping your stock tires and not even considering modifying your vehicle. I did consider the AT/3, but I’ve never personally had experience with them so I stuck with what I knew to be a great all around tire that I have driven on ice, snow, mud, sand, gravel, in hot temps, in cold temps and everything in between and what you’re saying about them being “hard as rock” has never impacted my ability to navigate difficult terrain. I appreciate your input, but a lot of what people do to their vehicles are opinion based and not fact. I do sincerely appreciate your input, but we all have opinions and they should stay that way not stated as fact.

    • @aklags
      @aklags 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roamingwithjosh no I was talking about someone else I won’t name here I’m not trying drag anyone through the dirt ;) However it is largely known within Subaru off-roading communities that the K02 is not a good match for the Outback. It’s something you see dealers and people who drive non-Subarus putting on. In almost every case you see people replace them as soon as they wear out. There’s literally almost no worse tire to use in the winter than a K02 based on how hard the rubber is and the properties of that rubber. Those are great for summer off raising and practically useless and actually will cause more danger on ice than an all terrain with almost no tread. The same reason they’re lousy for winter with hard rubber is why they’re so loud. My point has nothing to do with the ability to navigate difficult terrain. That’s exactly why k02’s are popular overall because they do great off road. However being this is a Subaru crowd not a jeep crowd, most of us drive on road the majority of time and many of us live where we have a severe winter. As someone who has owned many modified Subaru’s and many different tires I’m offering the real world experience to others. They can read and decide what’s best for them. Most will decide to change to other tires even after deciding to try k02’s. Absolutely nothing personal or meant towards you specifically it’s just important to represent multiple opinions so people have all the info to make their own calls. I’d like to see how you feel about those tires at say 25,000 miles of wear. I bet you also go looking for the Falkens. They offer a better sidewall but are a balance for people who are absolutely not going to be where rock crawlers go but want to be able to do some challenging off-roading. And for those reading I’m in the Colorado front range and those conditions are basically a little of everything. The Subaru club I used to belong to here has had this discussion online so many times and if people want to Google the topic there is a lot more available. Cheers dude no negativity towards you just trying to help other Subaru owners ✌️ (edited for spelling and grammar.)

A lot of time people are so negative on here and it’s hard to discern the way people are talking through typed text. All your points make perfect sense and you may be right. @@roamingwithjosh Yeah absolutely man, people are often not good versions of themselves online... plus sometimes its hard to tell the difference between simple passion and actual anger, one of the weaknesses of writing things online. I totally get that the jeep crowd is used to much more road noise, but also the subaru outbacks are just so poorly insulated from noise (this wilderness is actually quite an upgrade from the basic premium model on that front,) its a crazy noticeable difference in noise going to the Falkens from the K02's, pretty much on par with the stock tires they provide but better off road tread. A lot of people find them to be a "perfect" compromise between the two worlds. Anyway, happy holidays and hope you are getting out there this winter!

Having to go through the screen for heated seats is extremely distracting for me. The other 2 things that seemed odd are, no seat adjustment memories and the fact that if you disable the auto shutdown/start it doesn't keep that setting in memory either ( the forester widener does tho [?]). It will by default turn it on next time you start the car. Overall the wilderness does pretty much all we need, we are happy with the car, it's just too bad that Subaru could have made it much friendlier with just a few very common features in other vehicles. We are testing it offroad this weekend. As for on the road, my #1 dislike is the steering assist BS on the highway. Even turned off, the car keeps trying to correct my inputs, and twice on our trip it freaked out when passing a semi truck. I need to figure out how to totally disable that crap. #2 is the lack of memory seats! What the hell is up with that? The other trim levels have it, but not this one? I am 6'1", and my wife is 5'2". #3 is minor, but the freaking rear defrost button is on the right side of the center stack, too far away. #4 is MAJOR: The wireless cell phone charger is extremely slow, and will not fully charge a phone before it overheats and shuts off. What? I tried my Samsung S22, and my I-Phone, neither one got more than 20% before they overheat. I will be pulling that POS out and replacing it with a storage cubby.

    My new 2024 OW (autumn forest green/black) has a heated steering wheel, so thanks for doing this video :) I owe ya! Once I adjusted the contrast and brightness of the infoscreen, moved around the icons, I actually started to like it. I have mine set so the background and brightness match my analogue gauge cluster perfectly. Keep in mind, I'm a big analog/physical control guy so I thought I would never say that. My base WRX had a minimal dual screen and more physical/analog controls, but I like this one more now ironically.
    What I don't like is that Subaru has gotten rid of cd players... it's ridiculous, my Ascent had one but I think that was the last year/model that did... I still like CD's! Totally agree on the key fob, it's a bit of a money grab for Subaru which bugged me and I opted out of getting the Starlink upgrade. Solid logical con's to me here. I will add that they need to be much more informative online about the towing accessories and such, type of plug, etc. etc... Subaru are terrible at that. I'll be towing an 18.5" bass boat with mine.
    Ill be upgrading tires and springs, for better rear tow sag and offroad performance, plus the tires and springs will give me another 1" plus lift without having to do one. Would be nice if Subaru gave you those options out of the gate. Overall they did a good job with the 2024 Wilderness but they still have details to pay attention too.

    The outback is nice. What I don't understand is why Subaru didn't extend this through their whole line and make an Ascent wilderness. I have a family of five and we all love to go camping so it'd be nice if we could all fit in a sweet rig like this

    Coming from a 2014 CrossTrek (manual tranny) that has served us well, I can't decide if I want a Forester Wilderness or Outback Wilderness... The Forester would be an improvement just for the squared off proportions, but the Outback form factor would be ideal. I just can't get over that Infotainment screen. I'd want buttons too.

Really solid vehicle👍Especially for my day to day ski trips and it’s been solid soft sand beach runner(actually surprised)and got tested getting out of a very muddy farm field. Did solid. Yeah. Subaru is not known for giving you extra stuff for aftermarket accessory installs. Obviously to keep prices down. I understand this for the normal outback where it's a wide range of customers, but you are right about the wilderness needed it. Another great addition to have is a ScanGauge. I use it to monitor voltage, water temp and CVT temp. I have the previous generation (2017) so not sure about it being compatible with the new gen or if you can monitor those already in the infotainment system. BTW - I just bought a trigger 4 for my outback based on your video. Looks like a simple install. I can't wait!

    My Toyota does that heat thing as well, what works for me is to have the heat on till I’m comfortable then I turn the ac on to a neutral temp like 73 then turn it off and the air the continues to come out is at the 73 degree temp with the hvac system off. Might be a Japanese car thing but my 4Runner and Corolla do this but never had that issue in my keep or power wagon

    I agree with most of the things you hated about the OBW but I want to add one, upgraded premium sound systems. It's available on the outbacks touring and limited but not the Wilderness. Why?? because outdoor type mountain backcountry people don't appreciate great surround stereo sounds? Second, I totally agree about the terrible camera resolution in both front and back cameras. Common Subaru, this is 2022, spend some money on a better camera system. I will be happy to upgrade if that is available too. Terrible decision to use such low-end cameras in this nice car.
