Saxon was actually first mentioned in a newspaper in the Series 2 episode Love & Monsters. So yeah, Russel had been planning this for a while.
Karkat Vantas Actually, he had been mentioned in “The Christmas Invasion” giving orders to fire on the Sixorathax (sp) while Harriet Jones was taken (as Defense Minister, RTJ though he’d be in line to do so). You can hear one of the Tankers mention it before Harriet gives the order to fire.
Nope, that's in The Runaway Bride, which Harriet Jones is not in. That's the order to shoot down the Webstar. There are no tanks in The Christmas Invasion.
Even longer when you realize Mister Saxon is an anagram of Master No Six. With the Harold Saxon version being the 6th incarnation and actor.
Even earlier saw a Vote Saxon poster.

Gordon Tripple appeared VERY briefly as the incarnation before Eric Roberts, also in the Tv movie... Also, I think the Pratt/Beevers incarnation is meant to be the same as the Delgado one: because he's on his last incarnation in the first (12 regenerations, 13 faces) cycle, he doesn't want to die, and the body ages to the point he's dragging around a rotting, decaying shell of what he once was.
I like that RTD didn't go cray with the Master's goal, and just was creative with *how* he accomplished his goal. The Master is always about ruling the universe, even if he has to do it one planet at a time. Plus, if he can add hurting the Doctor into the mix, all the better. "I am the Master and you will obey me," is pretty much his raison d'etre.
A little history on the Master, he was originally played by Roger Delgado, until Delgado was killed in a car accident. In respect for Delgado's memory, it was decided to"rest" the character from the series for a few years. When he returned he had used up all of his regenerations and was staying alive through sheer force of will. His body was hideously decayed during this period so he looked like a decomposing corpse. Two different actors played him during this time, Peter Pratt and Geoffrey Beevers. Eventually he transferred his mind into a new body played by Anthony Ainley who you guys saw in the Five Doctors. In the 90's TV movie he was executed for his crimes but managed to transfer his mind to another body again, played this time by Eric Roberts. That version appeared to die in the TV movie, but was resurrected to fight in the Time Warner with a new series of regenerations. You've now seen him as Derek Jacobi and John Simms. No spoilers about future incarnations, if there are any...

Man, I remember disliking Martha's mom, but I forgot just how badly she fucks things up for everyone. Good on her dad for not going along with it, at least. What a trooper.

To be fair I remember at least thinking Sylvia had honestly learned something by the end of the series. I don't recall ever feeling that with Mrs. Jones, though I could just be misremembering.
New Who portrays a lot of mums badly, Amy and dead mothers not counting. Jackie got better later but she's still portrayed as being nagging, flighty and annoying.
We need a companion who has a really good, middle aged, mum.

What I find crazy, is that the Master RAN AWAY from the Time War. Seeing what he's capable of, his insanity, it makes you wonder again, just how insane was the Time War?
Not that crazy when you know the basic thing about the Masters character he spent decades living in his own corpse and eventually started stealing other people's body's just to survive

YEEEES!! The hype is real! There are so many good scenes in this episode including Martha seeing her family being taken away and The Doctor's conversation with The Master over the phone. Although the highlight scene for me is definitely The Doctor telling Jack and Martha about Gallifrey. Something about the flashbacks and the music really sets the mood for it so well. I also love the rapport between the three characters. The scenes they have with each other is great! Can't wait for next week! Martha strikes back! :D
I love all the small touches in this episode - the Master’s red lined cape on the tarmac, the way Simm says “the perfect warrior for a Time War.”

When I first saw this episode in 2007 (seven years old) I didn't know the word _psychiatrist._ I thought the Doctor was saying that the Master had decided on his name during some special Gallifreyan festival called "Saint Kyatrist's Field Day". I pictured children queueing in a tent to step forth and declare their name.

They tease harold saxon in the previous season too. He was the person that gave the tanks permission to shoot at the rachnoss web ship in the christmas special. RTD would plan the following seasons’s villain a year ahead and place teases way ahead
The first saxon referance was in the idiots lantern. There is an artical about him on absorbalofs newspaper. And the first torchwood referance was in season 1.

Yep, I'm pretty sure since all Time Lords are telepathic, then they as a species would be capable of bending other, weaker minds to their will. But since not all of the Doctor (and Master's) incarnations can do it, that it's more of a latent talent than a species-wide power. The hypnotism thing is probably strong in some regenearations and weaker in others.

Jelly babies are sorta like Wine Gums, I think. Chewable fruit jellies. Martha was awesome, loved Jack and her with an immediate bond. You all are observant in everything, really enjoying your reactions.
I've tried wine gums before, and you're right that they're quite similar. Jelly babies are way softer and more sugary though, and they crack open in a very pleasant way - Not to say that they're hard or anything, it's more like they contain a gooey interior inside a soft and malleable exterior.

This. Watching "Genesis of the Daleks" will give the twist and callbacks in next season's two-part finale have even more impact.
Sophia Dashwood Yep, they met The Master in The Five Doctors before they started series 3. They Should watch Genesis to meet another important character before series 4. Plus, The Five Doctors wasn't the best introduction to classic who but Genesis is one of the best classic who stories ever.
Yeah, I thought Five Doctors was a pretty poor introduction to both Classic Who and the Master. One of the Pertwee serials with Delgado would have been much better. Genesis would have been great to fill in last week's gap.

A fun fact about the Toclafane (that, don't worry, isn't a spoiler for next week): When the crew behind the show started working on the reboot, they weren't sure whether they'd get permission from the estate of Terry Nation to use the Daleks on the show, in part because of the Looney Tunes incident. So showrunner Russell T. Davies tried designing a new monster that could sort of fill their role, if they couldn't get the rights. That monster was the Toclafane.

Saxon appeared in a newspaper headline in series 2 of Doctor Who (Love & Monsters), which aired before series 1 of Torchwood, so it was already planned and seeded that far back. In fact, want to know how far back the Master's return was foreshadowed in the show? Series 1, Dalek - Rose tells the Doctor that there might be Time Lord survivors out there, the Doctor taps his forehead and said that if there were, he'd be able to sense it. So already it was planned that the Master was hiding as a human.

It's honestly one of my favorite Doctor Who novels, it's incredible and it feels like not many people know about it / have read it.

And now you know why the Master is my favorite villain. The first Master was a much more charming Machiavellian villain. He would be nice and polite until he killed you with no regret. The one you guys saw on 5 Doctors was more Snidely Whiplash mustache twirling. He has gone against Doctors 3-8 and now 10.
Well actually the second and first doctor meet the master in the 5 doctors. Also in a cannon audio drama the first doctor meets the master in that. The only doctors to not have an on screen meeting with the master is 9 and 11.

Being fair, what we English call crisps were originally called 'Game Chips.' They were cut by hand VERY thin, dried out on a cloth, fried very quickly for a few seconds and were served with game, such as pheasant. I suppose the terminology did not move on in America as it did here, so over there the traditional name for them stuck.

imo, this is more like a three parter! "Utopia" sets up the Master and the Toclafane, This episode punches you with the plot, and the next one wraps it up
