    Fun fact. The Last Christmas Special there’s a reference to Harold Saxon. There’s a soldier in a tank and you hear the words said ‘orders from Mr. Saxon, Fire at will’
    So he’s been hiding for a LONG time

    The Master is a lot more zany and energetic in this episode than his previous incarnations were, but then, so is the Doctor. The Master has always kind of mirrored the Doctor (It's kind of implied that he deliberately tries to copy him). The whole point of him, as a villain, is "what if the Doctor were a sociopath".
    It's always kind of funny to me how Jack says that "all the legends of Gallifrey made it sound so perfect." In Classic Who, the Time Lords were always portrayed as arrogant, xenophobic bureaucrats, with their society stagnant and bogged down in tradition. They "swore never to interfere," yet their secret service - the Celestial Intervention Agency - existed primarily to prevent other civilizations from developing time-travel technology.

      @@Alfwin for William Hartnell's age, he was actually quite energetic. Energetic doesn't just mean running around the set. Pertwee beating up people is energetic. Hartnell beating up people is energetic. Sylvester bumbling around and talking fast and strangely is energetic. Tom's childish sense is energetic.

    • @Alfwin
      @Alfwin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@rememo6294 But most of the Doctors only approached that level of energy when it was _needed_ (with the exception of Tom Baker; you're right there). Maybe I didn't word it very well, but Tennant is definitely more energetic than most previous doctors.

    I have a theory, that the Master gave the Torchwood team some 'hints' that Jack had been spotted, or that he was in fact in trouble, in the Himalayas and, being loyal friends, they set out to find him, not realizing that it was just the Master sending them on a wild goose chase to get them out of the picture.

    There is a saying in Who fandom when the Doctor goes a bit mental. ‘Doctor! your Master is showing!’
    A good way to put the Master in to context would be to think about those little moments when the Doctor looses his sh*t. Remember Eccleston’s Doctor holding a massive gun when confronting the lone Dalek in ‘Dalek’. Rose brings him back with “what are you becoming?” When the Doctor sometimes loses his sh*t it only last a few seconds and he always reigns it in or has a companion to set him right. Image if he didn’t! Imagine if he lost it for good, all that power! That’s the Master.

    An interesting tidbit about Harold Saxon is that the BBC created a website during the run of series 3 that was essentially a fake profile for him, as if he was actually real. It listed things like what school he attended, his University and what he studied, his interests and how he hopes to make a big change. All packed with pictures of him and Lucy, him attending various places for his campaign, etc. I think they did this super early on, too. A massive spoiler that nobody even knew existed until they showed it.

    The first reference I think was in Love and Monsters. In the paper the absorbolof carries. Saxon then gets mentioned in The Runaway Bride. He is minister of Defense that calls the attack on the Racnoss. The Time Schism is sort of like the sorting hat. Looking into it shows the Chancellors the sort of Time Lord they could be. The more adventurous tend to enter the Prydonian chapter. The Master and the Doctor are both Prydonian (they wear Scarlet robes). UNIT are international. It used to be a unit nations outfit and get their orders from Geneva.

  • @joshuathompson2404

    Yeah, the Master is one of those villains who in the classic series always died, but never for long....you know, the whole "the bad guy is dead! .....or IS he? DUN DUN DUN!" sort of things. So yeah, he was thought to have used all his regens. The doctor doesn't want to kill him because A. He doesn't want to kill the last Timelord (besides himself) in existence...especially after being responsible for the deaths of the rest of them during the war, and B. They were childhood friends, and I think the doctor thinks there is always a chance for redemption there...that he can get his friend back....
    Also, it never really fully explains the whole 'staring into the untempered schism' thing....they kind of imply that it's something that all students at the academy (where Gallifreyans become 'Timelords') have to do... Maybe seeing all of time gives them their 6th sense/understanding of time (fixed points, what can be changed, what can't, etc.) ? Maybe it's just a ritual, to give them an appreciation for time? Who knows? Pretty cool, though.

    Notes on The Master
    I’m not gonna say anything about death and the Master as it’s long and complicated but in recent years the Master has been given audio boxsets set during the Time War
    So how we know what happened but when this aired we didn’t. But I will say that Jacobi to Simm is the first Master regenerations we’ve seen on screen
    The Drums,looking into the untempted schism, and the laser screwdriver is all new to this episode -mainly just to explain and help new fans
    We have also been given other reasons to why the Master is the way he is but he was created to be a Moriarty like character in the show so

    This was made when the MCU was still just a gleam in Kevin Feige's eye, but the heli-carrier as a concept was introduced in the comics back in the 60's, in the "Nick Fury: Agent of Shield" feature in Strange Tales. UNIT isn't just a British organization, it's the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, so it's an international organization (they've modified the name to Unified Intelligence Taskforce in modern Who when the U. N. complained about the use of their name.)The earliest reference to Harold Saxon that I'm aware of is when he's name-dropped in The Runaway Bride. Really enjoyed this reaction. Hope you're going to react to Time Crash, the mini-sode that falls between the season finale and the next Christmas special.

  • @franl155

    You've probably already been told this a dozen times, but the Tellytubby bit is a reference to a Classic sequence, where the Master is watching the kids' tv show The Clangers with deep interest.
    In The Runaway Bride, the tank that shoots down the Raknos ship does so on the orders of Mr Saxon
    As I understand it, the Master used regenerations for disguise, so he ran out quicker than the Doctor.

  • @emaloney2211

    Don’t know whether it was deliberate or a coincidence but Mister Saxon is actually an anagram of Master no. Six as John Simm is the 6th actor to portray the Master on TV ( Eric Roberts played the Master in the 1996 movie but not included as it’s film)
    The Master is to the Doctor what Moriarty is to Sherlock Holmes. Both of equal intelligence but choosing to channel that in completely different ways.
    When Martha said she thought the Master was going to turn out to be the Doctor’s brother or something, it was a reference to the classic series in that they were planning to have that revealed as so but the actor at the time had died so the storyline was scrapped.

    The first Master we encountered presented himself as a suave and sinister businessman.
    Then he became what can only be described as 'icky!'
    After that he assumed the mantle of 'demonic-laughter villain';
    Then flamboyant dressy show-off;
    amnesiac,tortured old man;
    and now this 'extrovert and bat-shit crazy young guy'.

    The genesis of this story is interesting. It was actually one of the first plotlines developed when the Who revival was in the planning stages. The original concept was for the Master to have an Alliance with the Daleks, but at this point the BBC weren't sure if they could get the rights to use them, so the Toclofane were created as stand-ins.
    By the time the show had gone into production, a lot of things had changed, so they didn't bother rebranding them as Daleks,
    The Tellytubbies thing is a callback to a gag in classic Who. In one episode the Master is watching an old animated kid's show called The Clangers, and trying to understand their language until someone explains to him that they're puppets. They basically updated that. Many Americans don't realise Tellytubbies was a British show, as your channels tend to localise it with a new soundtrack.
    Weirdly, Sir Derek Jacobi, who played Professor Yana, narrated another show by the makers of Tellytubbies, called In The Night Garden. You have to watch it, it's the trippiest thing you'll ever see!
    As to your question of whether the Master was dead, it's partly answered in the 1996 movie, which you might get to at some point so I won't go into any detail. An interesting aspect of that movie is that it's hinted that peace has been made with the Daleks and they are operating as part of a space equivalent of the UN. As the Daleks and the Master both figure in this story to a greater or lesser degree, I would speculate that the episode you've just seen (replacing the Toclofane with Daleks) is a direct sequel, and maybe the Daleks weren't reformed beings at all but were a part of the Master's plot all along.
    I suppose the point of looking into the Schism is that it's a test, to see how they cope with the enormity of it. A kind of "throwing them in at the deep end".
    I think many British viewers looking at the Valiant would have thought "they did that in Captain Scarlet 50 years ago" rather than "they did that in The Avengers". At least, those of a certain age group in which I may or may not belong.

    Selected responses to your own observations! The Master being oddly interested in children's television was a tiny little nod to an episode from the 70s. He is, after all, completely insane. Interesting thing to think about: This is all actually the Doctor's fault. He caused the fall of Harriet Jones, and so he caused the election. All the Master did was sweep into gap he caused. As for the Master being dead; his timeline is crazy. Also his life hasn't exactly been conventional, even by Time Lord standards. It's no spoiler to say that he appears to have met a "final end" several times in the classic series, only to find his way back from it somehow.

    So I wanted to let the dust settle before this ...
    Hello and Welcome to an ongoing feature called
    “Iain nit picks the episode”
    And in this episode nit picks
    They really really really simply the UK general elections, you don’t vote for a prime minister, you vote for a political party.
    The gas thing is stupid as you’d have needed as many people in your party to win a UK general election.
    President Winters says he’s “President Elect” ... so he’s not the president yet so why is he leading this ?
    The drumming really bugs me as it seems to imply that he’s crazy because of that but the Master isn’t crazy he’s just so above everyone he believes that he should rule them, John Simm wanted it to play it more clam and collected but RTD said no
    Ageing the Doctor makes no sense as we know that 100 years is nothing to a time lord so why does he become an old man ?

    • @7thHourFilms
      @7thHourFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's 100 years for that form without regenerating. Correct me if I'm wrong but the forms still age. It's when a Time Lord grows to old in a form or is severely injured that they regenerate. That seemed to be what they were going for.

    • @iain9757
      @iain9757 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      7th Hour Films they do age but not as we do
      The first Doctor was about 450 ... it’s not so much an issue now but maybe later.
      Susan once said she was both the age of Ian and Barbara combined who were between 30-40 so Susan is about 60 or 80
      Taking away that it just feels like very odd and kinda random for the master to just age him up like that

      Oh what great nitpicks! I'd love to have a stab at countering them, if you please.
      1) I agree, but consider - literal hypnosis. Also it isn't actually unbelievable for a majority to vote for a popular guy rather than the party (unfortunately).
      2) The gas is silly, yes, but why run the country like he is expected to when he's just going to rule the world instead?
      3) We don't know how far through the presidential transition they are but given that Winters will be in charge for the next 4 years he would be the one making policies about the new aliens so he's there to circumvent unnecessary transitioning of a delicate situation.
      4) I don't want to say too much about the drumming because this is a public comment but you're right, but also time is wonky and currently things are different. Also there's a multitude of factors to the Master's craziness (consider - being revived, thrown into a war, forgetting who he was only to remember and discover everything he knew has changed. Gallifrey was his home too.)
      5) The Master actually explains (in very simple terms) that he's interfering with the passive regeneration of a Time Lord that slows their physical ageing, hence revealing what 100 years would look like if the Doctor was a normal being. No adding going on here, just subtracting certain species advantages.
      If you took the time to read this reply then thank you very much, and I hope maybe I have absolved some nitpicks (even if I have extrapolated a lot of unsaid and thus unconfirmed information).
