    The main connector between Boe and Jack is that the Face of Boe's dying words spell out YANA and the only other people who knew Yana was the Master apart from The Doctor were Martha and Jack.

      So he sent billions of years as a head in a jar? That sounds like a living hell. Why wouldn't his body have just regrown? He got blown up once and pulled himself back together.

      Jamie Christie Jack was meant to be in A Good Man Goes To War, but he wasn't able to because of filming commitments on Arrow. Given the people the headless monks recruit have heads that continue living indefinitely it makes sense that this might be the kind of thing that could change even Jack.

    The Face of Boe didn't die of old age, he died because he gave all of the energy he had to clear up that eternal traffic jam in New New York. Then again he was already sick before that apparently, so he might've eventually died of old age too.

      If you consider living for billions of years plus all of the torment his body was subjected to over the course of Torchwood and Doctor Who (having your soul sucked enough to overload Abaddon was a big one) it makes sense that he eventually would die

    • @Here_is_Waldo

      I thought the idea was that he became immortal due to being a fixed point in time, basically an event that had to occur in order for time to keep moving or he'd create a paradox. When he told The Doctor he wasn't alone, he was no longer trapped in the time loop so he died.

A problem with the new series are too many deus ex machina resolutions for the sake of emotional reactions rather than something that has logical narrative sense fitting the story universe. Good for Martha. This was a graceful and heartfelt exit for her. It's not always easy to let go of certain things but she took herself out of a situation (the Doctor's lifestyle), realised that there was no chance of anything happening between her and The Doctor and then simply moved on to live her life. She developed really well as a character. No special powers or anything. She walked the Earth, spread the gospel of The Doctor and no longer saw herself as second best. She finally realised how good she was. It's bittersweet too because The Doctor feels guilty of how he treated her. The Face Of Boe reveal is great. Always nice to see people react to that scene with Jack. :)

    • @aros0018
      @aros0018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Also in comparison to the other post-2009 companions, Martha really just had the worst time of it travelling alongside The Doctor. Not only because she liked someone who didn't like her back but also:
      -Had to work in a shop to support herself and The Doctor when the Weeping Angel stranded them back in the past.
      -Had to work as a servant while The Doctor erased his own memory as they were being hunted by The Family, during a time period where women and POC were given no respect.
      -Nearly got jettisoned into the Sun.
      -Acted as a rebel fighter for a year against The Master and his billions of death orbs while her family was made his slaves.
      There are companions who had worse fates in their time with The Doctor but Martha's was just one long stretch of bad thing after bad thing. I cannot blame her for leaving it behind.

    The theory of Jack being the Face of Boe is true. He can't die and will just grow older and older until eventual death which we saw this season. It is mentioned that the Face of Boe was decapitated by the Headless Monks (They appear in Matt Smiths run) and is put in the water tank to keep him from dying -he can't die from wounds but decapitation is overkill. Then as we have seen the Face of Boe gives all his last energy to save New New York and let the cars come up from the subway.

    • @Here_is_Waldo
      @Here_is_Waldo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In one of the episodes of Torchwood, he got a bomb implanted inside him and he was blown into so many pieces they needed a rubbish bag to collect him. He regenerated from the slag, so I can't imagine decapitation would take him out. I believe Jack is the face of Boe, I just don't see why he wouldn't regrow his body.

    • @hannahmerlino2462
      @hannahmerlino2462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Peyton mac sorry, I know this is old. But the reason Jack wouldn’t regrow a new body was because according to Matt Smith in “A Good Man Goes to War,” the headless monks mastered the art of decapitation while still keeping the original body alive. Hence why the headless monks can even exist and walk around. So Jack couldn’t have sprouted a new body since his head was still alive technically. I don’t know how he was able to die permanently as the Face of Boe, but I doubt we’ll ever learn about that.

Donna flicking a few switches to beat the Daleks isn't the greatest but "utter shit" is pushing it. There's a reason why that finale is as highly rated as it is, it's because it's the most fun Doctor Who has ever been. No other finale packs as much punch as that one. I teased this on the last Doctor Who video, so here goes... time to tell the story of the Toclafane, the never-made episode Absence of the Daleks, and how elements of the Series 3 finale were originally planned for the Eccleston finale.
    So back in the day, I used to hang out a lot in the comments section of Phil Sandifer's old Doctor Who blog, TARDIS Eruditorum. One of the occasional commenters there was Rob Shearman, writer of the Series 1 episode "Dalek" (among other things).
    And one day, he told us this story:
    During production of the first series of New Who, for a while it looked like they weren't going to be allowed to use the Daleks. The BBC doesn't actually own the rights to the Daleks--they're owned by the estate of Terry Nation--and they weren't sure if they'd be able to get permission. This was obviously going to be a problem for episodes like, well, "Dalek," not to mention the whole concept of the Time War.
    So Russell T. Davies created a backup plan in case the Daleks were unusable (not the first time Doctor Who has done this--that's where the Cybermen come from): the Toclafane. In this version of the story, the Time War was between Time Lords and Toclafane, but they never actually SAW the Toclafane, just their little orbs of death and other weapons--and they seemed to just come out of nowhere. He assigned Shearman to write an alternate version of "Dalek," which Shearman jokingly titled "Absence of the Daleks," in which instead of a lone Dalek survivor of the Time War, it was a lone Toclafane. The episode would then proceed much the same, except that you would never SEE what was inside the metal shell, and since it self-destructed the mystery of what the Toclafane were and where they came from wasn't answered.
    Until the "Bad Wolf"/"Parting of the Ways" finale. In the Toclafane version of that, it would turn out that (just like this episode), the Toclafane were the evil future descendants of humanity, traveling back from the end of time to conquer the past. Using the TARDIS to create a paradox, they would return to destroy Earth, and the only way the Doctor could stop them is by wiping out humanity himself--undoing the whole Time War and restoring the Time Lords--but he couldn't bring himself to do it.
    Then Rose looks into the heart of the TARDIS etc., just like in the filmed episode.
    I wish I could find the comment thread Shearman told the story in, but I don't remember what entry it was a comment on and there are a LOT to go through. Plus Phil's changed sites and merged his blog with a bunch of others and the archives are kind of a pain.

    I'm glad they all seem to like Martha a lot and appreciate how much work and responsibility she took on with the Doctor. I've always thought of her as one of the most dependable, hard-working companions The Doctor has had and really like her for that reason. Sadly nearly every other person I speak to places Martha as their least favourite companion because of her unrequited love arc, but I think whilst a valid point looking solely at that is a disservice to all of the amazing things she did during her season.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't even think it is a valid point; unrequited love isn't a storyline that shouldn't be done. The character was facing a lot because of racism and I wonder whether that isn't just something people latch onto. I would have liked the Doctor to have treated Martha better, even though his trauma because of how Rose left is a valid storyline. Had they delved into all of this more deeply, it might have been interesting. Alternatively, the Doctor could have just treated her better and not made her feel like second best. I mean, Rose is also portrayed as being in love with the Doctor, but no one finds that outrageous. Jack pretty much said he has unrequited love for the Doctor too.

    The way I always understood it is this....eventually Jack gets to a certain age where people from wherever he is from would usually die of old age. He dies and then comes back. His body realizes that unless it adapts, it will be a neverending cycle of him dying every other minute. So it evolves into a body that can live longer than he normally would. That process continues for millions or billions of years. That's why he is completely different by the end of it all--because his body evolved continuously until it couldn't anymore. The only reason he died is because he used his energy or whatever to save New New New (etc) New York.

    I think there actually was a hint at the cause of the Face of Boe looking the way he does in the episode with everyone stuck on the motorway in New New York. The cat guy warned the Doctor to stay out of the fumes because he once knew of a girl who stood out in the fumes for 20 minutes and her head swelled to be fifty feet. Maybe Jack spent too much time in the fumes?

    The deus ex machina magic stuff that brought the Doctor back because everybody chanted his name is a bit on the cheesy side, I'll admit, but if you remember earlier in the series and The Shakespeare Code, they did bring up the concept of "word science" and magic and the power of a name. It might have been a good idea to squeeze in a flashback shot from that episode, or a line of dialogue referencing it, because if you forget that episode happened it does seem like it's coming out of left field. Martha did mention that she met Shakespeare, I suppose, but that might not have been enough to recall the whole magic concept. Either way I feel like this season ties everything together really well, especially theme-wise, even if you might not notice everything the first time around.

    • @RoninDave
      @RoninDave 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the season finales in the new series pretty much used deus ex machina resolutions. The first one literally with Rose somehow becoming a god because looked inside the heart of the Tardis then destroyed an entire Dalek fleet with a wave of her hand. The second one was not so godly but it was equally an easily resolved one with a flip of the switch sucking thousands of cybermen and daleks into the void. In Season 4 Donna mentally becomes like a Timelord somehow and another fleet of Daleks gets taken out easily with some flip switching.
      Pandorica/Big Bang though was the worst. At least the other ones made sense even it was a silly explanation and it was all wrapped up at the end. Moffat gave us a convoluted unanswered finale where the Tardis blowing up somehow destroyed or erased from existence the universe because...reasons? And even though the Doctor is erased from existence and memory he is somehow brought back into existence by someone's wish? I wish people would just make good stories and stop trying to be clever (when they're not)

It's not just a big role he got as an actor, it's THE DOCTOR and he knows what that means. As much as I love the 11th doctor and his run, most of his seasons are in my top 5 and they have my favorite episode, David Tenant's doctor is my favorite Doctor.

He just didn't have the rebound girl crushing on him in between like Ten had. I kind of think it worked out better that way. I like Martha (when she's not being jealous and bitter) but I almost wish it had gone from Rose to Donna without the awkward, uncomfortable bit in between. It wasn't meant to be, though, since Billie wanted to move on and Catherine was too busy at the time to be a full-time companion.)

    My interpretation of Jack is that as we know, time is not a linear progression of cause to effect but more like a big ball of stuff.
    So Jack is brought back to life (maybe because of) and from that moment, him imparting his final secret to The Doctor at the end of his life, is a fixed point in time, which is why HE is a fixed point. As far as time is concerned, that HAS to happen, so every time Jack dies, the universe does not let him die because he has yet to deliver his final secret.

  • @JulfyJD
    @JulfyJD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They always seem to forget he has a time machine that can take them anywhere and anywhen.
    As for this episode I've always quite over the top and silly with that psychic transfiguration nonsense. They did have a nice run around a place I used to work at though.

    First, time-lords might not age the same as humans, second: My theory on Jack becoming the face of Boe is that since your ears and nose keep growing, and we know from Cassandra that drastic surgery is possible, and that Jack is vain, it’s possible he had the rest of his face enlarged as time went on to match his nose and ears. Eventually the rest of his body withered away or became useless.
    It’s a very Jack move to embrace the “Face of Boe” title and run with it.
    The reason he couldn’t just reduce the size of his nose and ears is that they would regenerate to the larger size, whereas artificially enlarged lips (for instance) would be forced to regenerate around the implants or whatever makes them large. Or it’s possible that the rest of his face was fake except the nose and ears, so that he wasn’t the “Nose and ears of Boe”

  • @theanyktos
    @theanyktos 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My personal headcanon about Jack/The face of Boe is that when Rose/Bad Wolf resurrected him, she made him a fixed point, meaning at every moment in time there has to be at least one Jack somewhere in the universe(or more since he does at times travel through time). So he physically _can't_ die, he just keeps living, no matter what, until (from his perspective) he's existed at every point in time at least once. That obviously would take him like a googol years or sth, which is a lot of time for strange things to happen to him and for his body to change and for legends to form around him. And in Gridlock it's just him at a point in his personal timeline after he's already lived at every point in time. So this time, it's not impossible for him to die anymore.

    The reason jack ends up as face of boe is because during the 2nd Matt smith season it’s stated that the head of a time traveller was cut off, so when jack come back to life he no longer has a body. But his head continues to grow. When this happened I think that with jacks sence of humour he would find it funny to go by the name of face of boe, also because he’s off earth this might be a more excepted name to other aliens within the Socorro who universe.

    no one knows the exact age for the face Of Boe but he is billions of years old, based on the timeline of the Dr.who Episodes that Face of Boe appears in
    The first clue comes from "the end of the world" the second episode of season one where you first see him along with Cassandra and the Tree lady that was set in the year Five billion and the second clue is "Gridlock" Season three episode Three the episode in which the Face of Boe dies which was set in the year five billion and fifty three, so he would have lived for at least that length of time.
    Also just to add the seeds of Jack being Face of Boe are there in "Gridlock" and "Utopia" in gridlock he calls the doctor old friend like he has known the doctor a long time even though this had only been the second time that the Doctor had met him as the face of Boe.
    But the biggest clue is when he said "you are not alone" ie letting the Doctor know of what is to come with YANA becoming the Master there is no way anyone else would know that other than Martha and she can't live for billions of years to tell the doctor that.

    I feel like the reason the troops aboard the valiant turned on the Master instantly was cause they were serving him out of fear thanks to the archangel network, just like the rest of the human race. So when they broke up the network from The Master's command they were able to think freely again.
    They probably could have done a tiny shot on one of the soldiers maybe saying they're free of his control again or something but either way I think that's why they turned so instantly. You have to remember in the end they were just as human as the rest of their race, so they would've felt the networks control via fear

    Aaron mentioned the 4 taps in the theme song, but he missed the other reference. The first time you hear the Master's "sound of drums" is in Smith and Jones, when Martha listens to the Doctor's heart in the hospital. 4 taps = heartbeat of 2 hearts in a timelord. So when the Master is dying and asks "Will the drumming stop?", he doesn't realize he's been hearing the sound of his own heartbeat.

So when Jack dies hes not regenerating, time itself is warping is body back to before he was just attacked. TheDoctor doesnt want to drag a paradox with him through time so he ditches him. And i think his head grows because of him aging and the paradox, like a tumor ha.

    The Star Wars example wasn’t originally planned, just a happy coincidence.

    The cat nurse says the face of boe has lived for millions of years the. Almost immediately the next episode with him jack asks what would happen if he just kept aging for a million years. Also maybe jacks face went all dr willow

    The only clue that The Face of Boe is Captain Jack is him knowing that Yana is The Master, so he created the phrase "You are not alone" to reveal the information as well as show who it is. Russell T Davis only came up with it all when creating series 3 though as a convenient joke.

    the face of boe thing IS true. it is canonically confirmed that he is the face of boe, the writers wrote it like that purposefully. things even line up, i dunno why they were so shaky on the acceptance thing. i've watched the making of the episode too and even the actors confirmed that it was a twist they were really excited about when they first read it. i hope someone tells them it's canon.

    When I first watched it, I just assumed when Jack aged so far, he pulled a Cassandra and started doing things to alter his looks, using alien tech and things that changed him a little at a time. Or someone cut off Jack's head and it didn't kill him so he was put in the tank to keep him comfortable?
