Good video, but I think Carti has ALWAYS been a style icon since he first gained popularity in 2017. His cover for Self Titled has the Vivienne Westwood shirt and then from Die Lit he really was pushing the boundaries of streetwear with RAF Simmons and other designers. The Opium style is just another iteration of Carti’s already long history in the fashion sphere

For me personally, Yung Lean, Bladee, and the rest of the sbe/gtb crew were my biggest inspirations to actually get into fashion. Polo sport, Y-3, Cav empt, Acronym, Final Home, Raf Simmons. They just wore it so effortlessly and made it look cool.
Another lesser known Australian rapper by the name of Tag Shai was an early influence for me. He rocked Bape, Off-White, Palace, Supreme, and Y-3 in a cooler way than most other hype beasts at the time did.
Overall though, Yung Lean wearing the J36-GT in the Motorola MV put me on a now decade long love for Acronym and other technical garments.

i started really getting into kanye in 2020, transformed my whole wardrobe. i have all the yeezy gap hoodies + the 2020 ones. also have the no seam tee, not to mention yeezys. i also got slightly influenced by tyler in 2022, as well as carti and opium lol. i got ramones and off white dunks because of them.

1 thing i wanna say about the yachty bit, it kills me that he was saying nyc has no influence on style the other day. that pic u showed from Early 2022, he literally looks like someone from NYc. in early 2020 Carhartt Vest, Jackets, and Ski mask got really really popular in NyC. Timberlands have always been something synonymous with New York. If anything he brought baggy back MAYBE, but other that that he’s dresses like someone from nyc. from the vintage rugby polos to the timbs

I remember when I was younger in elementary, I always wanted to dress sueve because my dad always rocked in his old man clothes. But during middle school and middle school I never had the confidence to do so. That was until I started listening to Tyler the creator. He really gave me the confidence to dress what makes me feel confident and comfortable in, and that meant a lot considering of my autism and people thinking I’m weird. I may be weird but I got style. Plus I’m a filthy poser lmao

That camo jacket is called Grey Lizard (sometimes Cuban Grey Lizard) and is from a line of Lizard camouflages produced (possibly in Yugoslavia, but also Korea) for the Cuban military during their deployment to Angola in the 1970s. Now it is extremely collectable and expensive.
The big pixelated camouflages being touted by Pharrel Williams is a very close copy of Project Honour camouflage made by LBX Tactical for Medal of Honour (as a tie in to the game a line of camo garments was produced in this pattern)

One thing you dont know is the styles that were out on the streets that might have influenced the rappers to wear a variant of their own. You had to be there or know people who were. Places like NY had street fashion that if you aren't from this particular place you wouldnt know the legacy of a particular item

It’s hilarious how all these styles have been around for literally decades but then all it takes is for one rapper to notice it, start wearing it and kids forget that their 50 yr old Dad was rocking the same Arcteryx gear when Frank Ocean was still in middle school. Wes Anderson is the white Tyler the creator 20 years before Tyler changed from Supreme king to rakishly old school fashionable. Fashion cracks me up, it’s has the attention span of a gnat and literally almost nothing is new or not stolen and claimed by someone recent. It’s all kinda horseshit. It’s a fantastic reason to be unique and wear what you like and not what’s trending.
Oh, hang on, I also want to add my appreciation of Ye for showing all of us that fashion literally takes zero talent. All you have to be is famous for something besides fashion, take a random 80s look or for that matter any style that was popular 10 or more years ago, and toss that shit out during fashion week and suckers will gobble up any ugly ass sneaker you put out or tan oversized tshirt for way more than it’s worth.
