Xin, great update. My russian olives, cottoneaster, and crab apples in my garage are leafing out too. Too warm this year. Now I just hope it stays warm enough that my garage does not drop below zero. North and West facing Garage so not much sun.
The weather is playing tricks on us or at least on the trees lol Maybe if nature will start spring 2 month in advance. The night temperature seems to be quite low but day time high are above 5!
Those darn critters did a number on you Xin. Hopefully they rebound better than ever. Early bud out everywhere this year. Let’s hope we don’t get a late deep freeze. Thanks, keep growing
Our summer in Australia has been very cool. So cool that my Peach and Chinese Elm's leaves are changing colour and they've stopped growing. Now we suddenly have a couple of weeks of hotter weather, so I have no idea what's going to happen. Last year they went to sleep after Christmas, then woke up again a cpl of weeks later. My Japanese Maples back budded really low on the trunk, so one of them will now be a twin trunk style. I can't complain about that!
I guess strange weather is everywhere, I don’t think we ever had a winter this warm before. I hope your trees does well in this ever changing climate 👍
Thanx for the update Xin and the Crassula reply (I’d forgotten that too!) sorry about the bad news, I’m sure you’re not alone. We’re having frosts again so I’m using horticultural fleece for protection n leaving it on during the day as the sun’s so strong on the breaking buds. Good to see the lavender looking fine, I thought you’d gone too far tbh but. always happy to be proved wrong! God bless you 🙏✝️ ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️
haha the lavender is quite vigorous so I am sure it will recover just fine, well it better lol I have heard a lot of people are having the same issue but Feb is almost over and spring is just around the corner now, can’t wait 👍🙏
Try digging the hole deeper to the height of the top of the tree. Then Chicken wire from the bottom of the hole to the top of the tree so as to make the chicken wire a bit higher to form a top. Once pot in hole, try leaves to the top of the hole and then close the top of the wire. That should protect the tree from the rabbits and the cold. Just a thought.
I used to chicken wire the entire raised garden and the corner of the yard but not this year because I parched the holes around the fence but the rabbits dug new ones. This only happened recently when the snow melted. I guess I will have to fence everything off to be safe
I feel your pain on all the trees that are budding out entirely too early. Sometimes rodent chops make really interesting little trees! Congrats on the cutting too!
I guess we are colder here than out in the North 40 by you. Nice updates outside and in. Failures. We all do. At least we learn from the failures on what went wrong and then how to correct it.
Think you for sharing this update. Sorry to see your outdoor trees got attacked. I wouldn't overly worry about the JM's leafing out. I actually started waking up my yearilings this past week to get a longer grow season out of them.
For me its my fruiting trees, cherry and almond that are budding out first in my garage. I left nothing outside this year everything went into garage or indoor.
Happy for your good news and happy your bad news was no worse. I like Nigel’s idea: send the rabbits to Japan to learn proper techniques! Amy ideas how Matt is making out with the crazy weather you are having? Best to all and hopefully a more normal spring.
Those rabbits need to prune more carefully, I'd send them to Japan for more training. I noticed even more of my trees are greening up now, even though I read them the weather report every day. It's been a strange winter, we'll just have to baby our trees until spring comes!
I agree the pruning job by the rabbit is terrible, it’s like they never done it before! No more free intern rabbits, I will get the professionals next time! This winter is warm, good for me but not so much for the trees.
Hey, what’s this rooting experiment? Did I miss the video?!? Sorry about dealing with the early budding on your garage trees. At least you have experience with this!
I think I mentioned the experiment on Nov 20 of last year near the end of an episode. Yea it seems lot of people are having the same issue with the warm weather
the maples begin buding when it finishes sap above freezing temps for a few days which stops maple production all that had to be done is let the temp stay around 3 or 5 C
Now if you had an ugly, then you could have a cool name for another video: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. All you would need is Clint Eastwood to make a guest appearance. Just some humor. Good to experiment. We never know what will happen. Great that it rooted. Cool.

Great updates. Your indoors are looking cool!
Thanks Tom 👍🙏

The temperature here has been varying between 5 and -5 almost everyday. The stuff in the garage is relative but not ideal growing conditions

Things definitely waking up here in the UK. My cherry trees and crab apple are leading the charge, and my maples are beginning to swell up.
Yes I am hearing the same from a lot of people. I guess it is a bonsai worldwide problem lol
Cool update Xin
Thanks Gerardo 👍

These rabbits were untrained, their pruning technique were strange at best, maybe they know something I don’t… entirely possible 👍🤣
I guess we are colder here than out in the North 40 by you. Nice updates outside and in. Failures. We all do. At least we learn from the failures on what went wrong and then how to correct it.
Yes the temperature is all over the place. We had 12 degrees one day right in the middle of Feb, just crazy.

I don’t have an ideal condition indoors to grow the JMs but gonna have to deal with them now lol

Yes big problem for a warm winter. I usually never complain about a warm winter… until now!

Not sure about Matt but I think most people are having issues in this mild weather, unless their trees are in a north facing yard.

nothing is trimmed to look like a triangle is the 1st issue and the 2nd issue us keeping the plant growing over the pot to show grounding correctly.

bon sai - pot tree
Is your garage unheated or heated?
it is unheated but south facing so it has a slight greenhouse effect.
Now if you had an ugly, then you could have a cool name for another video: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. All you would need is Clint Eastwood to make a guest appearance. Just some humor.

hahaha yes if one of them rotted then it would have fit the description lol
the trees are not leafing they are budding because they produce flowers pollen 1st in the land scape
