Also here's something else. When Shanks was confronted in Windmill Village, Luffy got mad and Shanks was chill. When Luffy got confronted in mocktown, Luffy was calm and Nami was mad. Now fast forward to Return to Sabody, when Nami was confronted by the fake straw hats, she kept her cool and ignored them. She learned from Luffy

It's so strange how Blackbeard gives a speech on the importance of dreams, and Luffy, who champions this idea throughout the story and always smiles at this kind of talk, instead just stares right through Teach. Luffy has ignored people before, and stared at them with anger and hatred, but I can't recall another moment where he stares at someone with such emptiness in his eyes.

This may be a reach, but I love how height is used between Luffy and Blackbeard. In the bar, Blackbeard is literally looking down on Luffy whereas Luffy is looking up. But then at Blackbeards speech you can see that when he sat down their eyes meet at the same height. They both respect each other and share the same ideals. He doesn't talk down on Luffy, but rather sees him as an equal pirate.
And later on , after Blackbeards actions, when they meet again in Impel Down we have that panel of Blackbeard towering over Luffy looking down on him, as he got stronger and turned into Luffys biggest enemy. So yeah, maybe a reach, but maybe not. You never know with Oda

To understand why Luffy didn't fight back, consider the park bench scene from Good Will Hunting:
    > Sean: Thought about what you said to me the other day, about my painting. Stayed up half the night thinking about it. Something occurred to me... fell into a deep peaceful sleep, and haven't thought about you since. Do you know what occurred to me?
    > Will: No.
    > Sean: You're just a kid, you don't have the faintest idea what you're talkin' about.
Luffy is ready to defend himself against someone who has insulted his dreams. But then, as Luffy listens to the guy explain himself, it occurs to Luffy what kind of life this man must be living.
This is a guy who genuinely believes that dreams are worthless, that putting your life at risk for your ambitions is a waste. How miserable must that be? This man will never experience the unparalleled joy of getting that one step closer to your goal, or reminisce about the crazy things you've experienced in your journey to get there. This man, who has never even experienced the kind of "dreams" he's denouncing, is trying to call them worthless.
What possible satisfaction could you get from beating him up? It isn't "evil" that he doesn't believe in dreams, it's just... sad.

It's also a show of how much Luffy has learned from Shanks since he was a kid, when Higura, the bandit made fun of Shanks, Shanks didn't care, but Luffy made a big deal, here we see Luffy take Shanks' role while Zoro follows Luffy's lead and Nami takes Luffy's role

As a man, who has a dream which everyone says is, for someone like me is not achievable , and those who know what my "dream" is only knows a small fraction of it, this scene/moment in One Piece has touched me the most and still does till now. This and Hiriluck's "Men only die when they are forgotten", which is also related to the dream of mine, are the two, in all of fiction which I had read and seen, you can say, important, touching my very core, scenes.

By far my favourite scene in the series, everything was set up so perfectly for this moment to hit as hard as it did. Looking for Sky island, Bellamy insulting those who dream, Luffy refusing to fight. And then the speech, that single scene that is able to encapsulate everything One Piece is about and why I love it so much. Blackbeard is my favourite villain of all time

To me it’s a psychological scene. Some ideas are so bad they aren’t worth contending with. Arguing with a flat earther is like fighting with Bellamy, it’s not worth it. Fighting with Blackbeard is a fight against luffys dark side and is worth contending with, the fight reveals information like a good argument with a respected friend, often resulting in personal growth.

I didn't even know that they said this! or possibly forgot
it wasn't as impactful in the anime as it was in the Manga and I only watched the anime back then. holy shit. I'm full on with this theory, that's why only Luffy and Zoro felt more than once presence and also why he seems like at least two different people comparing this scene to impel down.

The popular theory is that Blackbeard is 3 people in 1 body.
I just think Luffy and Zoro were referring to BB crew. Before they encountered BB here, they've met Doc Q exploding people, seen birds get sniped off the sky and i think the hunk of a man Jesus Burgess. They simply connected the dots that those dangerous fellows must be together and connected them to Blackbeard

He's just a very nuanced and unpredictable character and the souls theory would ruin that about him

    • @anayos6726
      @anayos6726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It wouldn't ruin anything because Blackbeard already has an abnormal body for possessing two DF's. Don't be disappointed if the answer to his powers ends up being goofy as hell; The man is a foil to Luffy, after all. The fact that Luffy and Zoro refer to BB as "Them" only raises questions about the way his mind works, as he strangely just waltzed into Magellan's poison without utilizing his darkness.

If you think about it, Dreams really do never die. Even if people fail to attain them, desires don't just vanish. The truth is our feelings about dreams may sour or turn into contempt, but DREAMS NEVER DIE nor wane. For example, Gecko Moria and his whole story from nothing to something, back to nothing (make hella zombies), then desperately tryna gain something. Gecko never lost sight of obtaining the One Piece and becoming Pirate King, even after becoming a zombie.

I think the reason Luffy didn’t fight the people in mock town is explained by Oda himself. Since Luffy doesn’t kill his enemies, but aims to crush their dreams since that is worse in his eyes than death. When the people in Mocktown mock dreams in general and the sky islands, Luffy knows their dreams are gone and there is no purpose to fight them.

It's worth pointing out how Luffy and Garp slept talking to each other.
It's as if the traits of their clan made them dream while interacting with each other. It's like it's cultural, and more than considering what is a legitimate dream or not, the idea is not to consider it as ilegitimate, but another form of dealing with strife (lack of food), whether it be literally or figuratively.
Whereas Luffy will "truly dream" by sleeping and being courageous, perhaps Teach wont sleep out of fear, thus "false dreaming" over what he wishes to have for himself in a much more self conscious way, unlike Luffy's perspective, Teach will deal over suffering by staying awake and focusing on himself and all of the cruel relations of our current world, rather on projecting a projected world where things can be imagined and constructed, which Luffy looks like he would be the kind of person to be.
We could say the will of the D represents humanity's chaotic drive which consists of an "out of control" factor, the very same factor which guides humanity, we may say the D clan is that part of humanity which can't be controlled, the oppressed people of the world who can't have things but will always strive for their share one day.

  • @thatonenoob7854

Blackbeard and Luffy both have the same dreams, same motivations but different approach and outlook.
They both want to be free, they both want to be pirate king, they both care about their own crew (Teach to an extent when he warns Burgess not to attack Ace because he won't win.).
But their approach is similar too but differs.
Luffy is straightforward, take down the strongest person there. If not, take down the second but through strength.
Blackbeard is deceptive. He takes down the strongest person there (Whitebeard) but through deceit and strategy.
