The DARKEST Chapter of One Piece - Luffy Punches A Celestial Dragon

- In this scene analysis I discuss the epic moment of Luffy punching a celestial Dragon during the sabaody archipelago arc. This chapter in my opinion is the darkest of the entire series and touches on everything that is wrong with the One piece world and why luffy has to change it. The tenryuubito rule over this world with absolute power and we see their disregard for human life in the slave auctions taking place in this chapter. The Anime made that punch feel so much more satisfying and intense.
The only scene to outshine Snakeman vs Katakuri.
wait your not there law?
A rare moment when the anime actually lived up to the manga.
Luffy punched the dude so hard they turned into manga
loved the animation in sabaody arc :'(
Luffy knocked the color out that man
Literally
Hence the darkest 😂
This wins
He straight up turned the anime into a manga with one punch
And his own
Luffy's punch was so hard that the Celestial Dragon returned to the manga
It did, didn't it?!! 🤣
i dont care how many times i see this comment, it fucking always cracks me up
which is crazy because in the panel that he showed it was colored
he punched that celestian dragon so hard the manga and anime switched color palettes
Luffy need clean his hands after that. That's how gorss those celestial dragons are
Luffy is the original one punch man.
Something I really appreciate about this moment is the fact that luffy is standing up for the people, not for himself (even if it’s for his friend) and therefore he doesn’t use his powers, being able to take the bullet and ricocheting it, being able to stretch his arm for a stronger punch, but instead beating Charlos as a human, not as the rubber man and doing it in a way that even if he didn’t have a devil fruit power, the scene would play as the exact same
You're so right. All he did was walk up stairs and throw a punch. Anyone could have. But only Luffy dared to.
I felt like he saw charlos as someone who was not worth using his techniques on. And just decked him with his strength.
@@Katsunai but he did a somewhat similar thing with fujitora, he did hold back his powers, but told fuji of every attack he's doing to acknowledge his blindness
As kid luffy said "My punches are like pistols!"
I really like that luffy knew there would be horrible consequences but did the right thing
I love how this further solidifies Luffy's character as a fearless leader that won't let anyone get in the way of his goals and won't let anyone stop him from protecting his friends. Even if the whole world is against him.
I love this scene so goddamn much.
I can't wait for the day when Luffy can beat an admiral, and the stupid looks on the Celestial dragon's faces when they realize the straw hats can do so.
@@Cloud-dt6xb Akainu maybe, Even though akainu is a fleet admiral
But I also like that he’s also starting to realize sometimes that endangers himself and his crew as he matures
Not like he isnt fearless. Aokiji, and Kizaru put the fear of God in his heart. I'd argue actions like punching the Celestial Dragon, or burning the flag of the world govt at Enies Lobby comes more from passion rather than fully knowing the ramifications of his actions. He'd make an excellent Sith. The way he allows his emotions to rule him is wild.
@@michaelbread5906 not really there's a difference between following your instincts and acting on emotions. You can't have that kind of mindset in life. You got to listen to your heart, sometimes ignoring clear logic. Everyone in the One Piece world just let everything that is bad happen because their logic tells them unreasonable to, say, punch a celestial dragon, but then you are just going around pretending you don't notice your friend literally getting sold into slavery. Luffy doesn't act on emotion, he does what he thinks is the right thing(according to his morals) and doesn't worry about the the consequences
“Even though no one dies” okay except the guy who died
not even lmao, that guy showed up when all the slaves were getting free, and it went under the radar, someone brought it up in an SBS and Oda confirmed that that guy was actually alive ahaha (i'm not 100% tho, it's just that I'm fairly confident in recalling this)
@Matthew Herman yeah, getting his ass beat by a reformed dragon
Regular people die in one piece all the time. But People only pay attention to named guys. But is it really fair to say "no one dies in OP"
@@Aether_GM in alabasta people die
in skypea not so much
@@Aether_GM exactly. especially TH-camrs do not care about the nameless who die. They are never mentioned
Maybe, in a tiny corner of Luffy's subconscious mind he felt history repeating itself when he "lost" Sabo to another Celestial Dragon when they were children. He felt having the power to do something at this moment and not lose a friend by the hands of these scum.
The next scene made me tear up when they revealed what they have done. And that sealed the deal with me, loving these guys so much.
Yeah maybe if he killed him it would have Been great thougj
@@hashiramacells9845 Luffy had never killed any antagonist across the story of One Piece. Oda never gave Luffy the "kill when it's necessary" shtick, even towards this Celestial Dragon. So, he just "kills" his enemies' ambitions/goals/"dreams", but NEVER took their lives at any moment. This way, they feel what they couldn't get and their illusion shatters by him. At least, that's what I've seen across the storytelling.

the real horror that makes this arc the darkest one: every horrible thing wwe see here is not only NORMAL, and not just an exception, it's something most veryone here is OKAY WITH. THIS is the 'just' world the world goveernment created and the marines portect. THIS is GOOD. All the discrimination, the slavery, the cruelty, it's HOW EVERYTHING IS SUPPOSED TO BE. It wasn't created by some moutache twirling villain and, once defeated, things will get better and everything's fixed forever. No. That's not it at all.
Only a small handful of slaves are saved, only this one shop is destroyed. But there are plenty of other slaves being sold in other shops, the doctor is not reunited with his wife, said wife is not saved, the people of sabaody don't learn a lesson and nothing changes. Why should it? After all, THIS IS NORMAL. THIS IS OKAY. THIS IS GOOD.
And that's what makes this the darkest arc.
The real horror of this arc is its based on real life.
Agreed
Marineford wasn’t even as dark as this
@@redcr33perproductions idk, Marines surrounding the pirates and unleashed several barrages from cannons and Akainu, not to mention Pacifistas killing many soldiers, Akainu lying and performing underhanded tactics, several attempts to push the execution forward. Marineford has more straightforward brutality while Sabaody is more horrifying to victims than the bystanders. Impel Down was also pretty messed up, with all forms of torture and slow executions (starvation, bleed out, burned alive, freezing, poison).
@@redcr33perproductions I suppose what I was trying to say is that the darkness with Marineford, Sabaody, and Impel Down cover different forms.
One other thing i find it amazing on this scene is the reaction of the scraw hat crew. They all knew what luffy is going to do next and the consequence of the same but they all just stood there and watch. It shows how they respect their captain's resolve under these scenario. Maybe this is the reason why ussop has not arrive on the scene yet because based on ussop character in the series, he would probably be against the idea of luffy punching the celestial dragon, and his reaction beforehand would probably ruin the moment. Damn you Oda. Best story telling.
Well, you've gotta look even deeper. Most of them suffered from some kind of tyrants and douches. But once Luffy came in their lives everything changes. Those tyrants have fallen. And right now, they knew what must be done. After all Celestial Dragons are even worse than those villians, because, let's face it, there're aren't many douches like that in all anime/manga
And usopp' himself landed on charlos's father when he arrived 😂
I laughed so much at that scene
Not really ussop was with Luffy when the he started a war against the WG to save robin
He's literally the one who burned the flag of the WG

yeah oda let him survive on purpose...
i wish they killed just not him, but half of that auditory
but then we can't see him do it again later in the story...
Nice to finally see this moment being covered, probably one of the most iconic moments of the series (edit: also most satisfying punch)
Wano has quite a close second, if you know the one I'm thinking of. Maybe that's more hype, though....
This is actually my favorite scene in all fiction. Back then my 14 year old self went from crying to anger to hype to cheering to the ultimate release feeling the punch right as it hit. Even today I still feel all of that. Obviously not as much as in the first time, but this satisfaction I get out of this scene is probably one of the best things ever
In real life, I hate violence. But when Luffy punch the Celestial Dragon, it’s soooo satisfying!
Depends on who is on the receiving end
It would be great to see an analysis video of Usopp egging on Luffy near the end of his fight with Lucci. I know everyone loves the “I want to live” scene, rightfully so, but that scene where Usopp yelling at Luffy to get up, that he’s not in hell yet, is so powerful. I think it’s really under appreciated and could use a good analysis.
I really love that there is no special move, he doesn't even use his devil fruit power. Luffy just hits him with the most personal punch possible.
u forgot to mention Zoro wanted to kill the celestial dragon before Luffy
Yeah I imagine Luffy injured a tenryuubito, but if Zoro killed one, it would be buster call levels of hell.

@@msegundino8043 You think the hat itself is Joyboy? I'd be slightly interested to hear your explanation on your theory
@@YouArePitiful No, I didn't mean the hat is joyboy. I meant the strawhat is his and that his body is probably there cryogenically frozen (assuming he is dead), frozen/sealed in time (he was sealed), or that he is expected to be there when he appears again (toki sent him to the future in that exact location, leaving his hat behind thus the idea of "appointed time" like momo and kinemon only appearing during luffy's time) the reason why roger and his crew said they were too early and that oharans got impatient.
I'm saying this because i dislike luffy becoming joyboy incarnate. Oden also stated that wano should be opened 'before joyboy reappears'.. and currently, luffy and the others are still on the process of doing it.

The fact that the main catalyst for Luffy punching a celestial dragon was over a former enemy adds a lot of weight to his character.

It’s just one of my favorite moments, it’s a scene I think back to pretty often and makes me think “man, One Piece is awesome.” This also set in motion some bad and good things to follow. It got the Strawhats in trouble with Kizaru showing up but it granted Luffy support from one of the warlords: Boa Handcock, when she found out.
I feel like Kuma’s story will be a direct reflection of how destructive and cruel the world government is. His story may be the saddest in OP.
I still believe there's a lot more about Kuma than what we know. I wouldn't be that surprised if somehow all that's been happening to him is collateral damage for a plan he has.
The darkest will always be the buster call, even after the smiles.

Literally every video: "This right here, is one of my favorite moments in One Piece" XD
It makes me wonder how he survived that punch. He's basically marinated in comfort with no obligations, and so his body is probably as soft/weak as it can be without illness. He then gets punches by Luffy, the future pirate king, tough as steel, and with pure anger, right in his snotty irritating face.
That punch was fueled by revenge for acts of racism, slavery, complete lack of general empathy, pure spoiledness, injustice, and other atrocities. He should have flown and landed in a statistic. Straight to the obituary. And we'd all be happy for it.

I was 100% with you until the part about Luffy being the only one who would dare to challenge a celestial dragon in the word and not even an admiral or yonko would dare. Dragon and the revolutionary army, you even have Zoro who was about to cut down a celestial dragon, don't make it seem like Luffy is the only one in the world with the balls to do what is right cos I'm damn sure that characters like Ace, Whitebeard and Katakuri wouldn't hesitate to take out a celestial dragon if they messed with their friends/family
It's kind of a funny mirror for real life, even with extreme anime exaggeration there are parallels between the world government and the pirates, just like during the Golden Age of Piracy in our own history.
Quick reminder, one of the most frequent targets for pirates (Including Edward Teach aka Blackbeard) were slave ships. Pirates would frequently attack slave ships, free the slaves, and offer them the choice to join their crews. Blackbeard's ship the Queen Anne's Revenge was originally a slave ship that he stole and modified into the greatest pirate ship in the world.
Meanwhile the government were the people who kept the machine of slavery moving, turning people into items that can be bought and sold. Funny how the murderous thieves were more honorable than the government..
Zoro was also trying to cut celestial Dragon in this arc.
Probably would have killed him as well that'd why my fravourite character even kid was shook
@@hashiramacells9845 kid wasn’t there
@@لاإلهإلاالله-ر8ع I mean at the auction house he was shocked at what luffy did I assume he wouldn’t do the same
@@hashiramacells9845 the original comment was talking about Zoro not Luffy
@@لاإلهإلاالله-ر8ع I know
The pirate that bit off his tongue is underrated, that's some real fucking determination there.
I just wish I'll meet a Luffy in my life :")
Real damn close to 100k well.. congrats on 700k ohara
Waiting on Usopp vs Luffy
Fan of one piece for more than a decade now. Awesome vids!
New subscriber. :-)
Luffy punched him back to the manga lmfao
Its scary how I just watched this exact episode for the first time last night on an entirely different streaming website (ug, not one of the big official ones like crunchyroll/funimation/etc) and came upon this as youtube recommendation when I wake up this morning.
your videos are amazing, I really think this channel will grow a lot more!!! I'm recommending it to a lot of friends who love the one piece series cause I think you really understand Oda's storytelling
One Piece is getting dark.
It's always been.
What i loved about this moment is that the whole crew had a collective “this is why Luffy is the captain” moment.
Not gonna lie havent been subbed for long but gotta say I really love how you do these videos. Dissecting a scene or a panel or a chapter is one of my favorite things to do while reading manga cause you can learn a lot from doing so. The fact that I found a youtuber that does the same thing as me is really nice. Cant wait for the next one
