Luke IS The Man. Pure Class. Wanted Ms Chapman To Take Centre Stage. He Is So Humble. So Happy To Be In The Presence Of Greatness. WHAT A BRILLIANT DUET, SUPERB PERFORMANCE.
I grew up with this song, I don’t know that guy, but I’ve never seen anyone with the original singer so respectful, modest and appropriate. Much respect to him
I thought exactly this. He's clearly having one of the great moments of his life and he's absolutely respectful. This is the video that should be in the manual under "how to perform a duet with the original artist".
@BufordTJustice304 LOL, black folks actually do, especially black women, you're not one nor have you ever made a black girl or woman blush, so you wouldn't know 😂
Dear God, No! the one song that everyone owns a piece of, Folk, Country, pop, Black, White,Straight, Queer, this song resonates because it was none of the above, while being all of the above. its a masterwork, the cover made it complete, it allowed Gen X and Gen Z to have that one thing in common. i ADORE her, and im so proud of him for bringing this song to a new generation. its Perfect!
As much as I love her and this song, it reminds me too much of my mother, who has since passed away. I had to come watch this performance. You better believe I'm bawling right now 😢.
How does Tracy not only sound better than the original- her voice here is so smooth and controlled- but looks more gorgeous too??!!? What a beautiful remix!
No pyrotechnics, no backup dancers and prancers, no tricks. Just old-fashioned, straight-from-the-heart music. Thanks, Tracy, for the gifts you gave us 30something years ago, and thanks to Luke for helping us remember what great music sounds like.
I was connecting about this to a coworker...I miss the days where the music and musicians were enough, because they were truly talented and the music meant something
I dare the DC mob (Washinton congress) to sit down, watch this, and NOT start singing along. Those that actually don't? Well then it'll be easy to know who NOT to vote for.
Well said. I have no idea who this chappy chap is (I hope to find out)... But, its not.just the respect he shows for Tracey ... he is honestly gushing and you can tell he has just lived out an honest dream moment, he's honestly trying to contain himself. It's a wonderful version. And it's a special person who'd get to sing beside her at the Grammy awards.
Luke has treated his covering of this song so gracefully. He's paid respectful homage to Tracy's art and introduced a whole new generation to her greatness, never trying to portray ownership of the song one time. I've been a fan of Tracy's for so long, and I'm a new fan of Luke's, I'm just so happy for them both.
It really is so cool. It's also just super genuine. One great artist paying homage to another and keeping the flame alive with soulful purpose. Truly special.
You know what I like about this duet? You can tell that Combs respected Chapman immensely. You get impression that he knows he's singing HER song, and that he's singing WITH her. It seems like, when new artists attempt to perform songs with the original artist, the new artists is performing the song like they wrote it.
Even when he re recorded it he kept the same story and everything including the “check out GIRL” part which always gave me a chuckle hearing his burly voice say but I knew (and own) the original
Yea, he did follow her lead, he was clearly smitten. Then on the last chorus he started with Tracy instead of coming in a few notes later. That was a performance for the ages in my book.
@@VlD3adly i don't know this man's music (i think he's a country singer?) but when i watch this performance as i've done like 37 times 🤣 i don't think it was him "outperforming" miz tracy... i get the sense that he just has some massive pipes & could've very easily blown her out the water. lol miz tracy has a delicate voice, and i feel like he was conscious of that & held back to let her shine. it was just so beautifully done all the way around. 💙
He’s so respectful. It makes me emotional to this day as my dad who passed away in 2022 had SO much respect for her in the late 90s so we would sit in his truck and listen to all of her hits until they were done. I hated him for doing this song. I believed this song should never be touched. I didn't give it a chance and now I thank Luke for honoring the song and Tracy. I was wrong. Thank you Luke
Goosebumps! All these years later this moving song with its haunting lyrics still has the power to touch our hearts. Have loved Ms. Chapman's music from the first time hearing her debut album. I had the great joy to hear her live in concert in Edinburgh. It's heartening to see the admiration in Mr. Combs' eyes as he frequently looks over to Ms. Chapman and beams a smile at her. He sings so movingly, the words of the song holding such meaning to him. It's a joyous coupling of worlds in these two singers. Thanks to both artists.
You can see the pure joy and happiness on Luke's face getting the opportunity to sing this song with his idol....he very clearly enjoyed every second of this duet...

Who else got chills before the song when the crowd started cheering and MISS TRACY had the biggest uplifting laugh! She’s getting the recognition she’s deserved after sooo many years and felt that in that very moment!
This is the best Grammy performance in a very long time. Tracy Chapman and Luke made a magical and nostalgic atmosphere that prove sometimes less is better.
I didn't watch the grammys, but stumbled on this video, it brought tears to my eyes, when I say Tracy , loved that song growing, hearing luke combs singing, he did a great job of bringing that song back to life
She absolutely does! You can tell she enjoys her craft. With that being said I am glad that spilled over to Luke. He normally to me looks like he hates it up there. I finally got to see his enjoyment side and I am here for it!
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Luke combs does nothing but look at Tracy Chapman like he can’t believe he’s even on the same stage as a legend like her. Such beautiful respect between two different amazing genres of music. Absolutely in love with this performance.
There's something in the humble demeanor of both of them that's really moving. No diva shit, not hogging the spotlight - both acknowledging the other in a respectful way. Especially Combs, who apparently grew up with the song and has enormous respect for Tracy Chapman. More duets please.
She’s definitely blinking back tears as she first starts singing… the look of gratitude from the cheers.. raised eyebrow in surprise.. wonderful that she had this moment..peers and fans cheering loudly..!
100% true statement. Luke was giving her full credit for the song and clearly in awe to be singing with her. But she looked every bit as thrilled to be there with him and grateful that through him her song meant so much to so many people.
I'm a young musician and I saw pretty much the exact same thing, the cheers from the crowd, big time respect from Luke Combs, and there was Taylor Swift standing alone and singing evert word of the song. What a magical moment.
What's really so very sweet is the way Luke looks at Tracy Chapman with wonder, adoration and a bashfulness that makes him duck his head when she smiles back. And Tracy Champman's delight in HIS joy and their performance together. It's simply a love fest from the heart.
I love him ❤ And this is one of my favorite songs of all time. I just love it and I never thought I could find someone that could sing it like her, but in his own version. And just as amazing..... Both of you guys ROCK ❤
Man, I'm gonna tell you. I saw this original video on MTV. When I was in high school and I was always fascinated by it. What an amazing duet. Thank you Tracy for agreeing to do this and thank you Luke for thinking this up. Gosh it's really great seeing you guys perform together. I wouldn't have thought your voices would match up like that. It's quite good
No annoying fireworks. No fancy costumes. No weird dancing lights. Just raw, pure, singing, full of emotion and meaning. This has been, and will be, a song that 90% of the world feels in their soul no matter how many times it is played. Thank you for sharing an official version of the performance.
I remember the first time I heard Tracy sing this. 1984 at the Nameless Coffeehouse in Harvard Square Cambridge Mass. I was working as the light and sound tech, and she was a regular performer at the Nameless. My heart fell silent as I listened to her that night. She had released this song along with several others on a local label, and it was an instant local hit. When she won several Grammys 5 years later I was not surprised. She started out as a street musician in Harvard Square playing in the main entrance of the Co-op. It was an honor to have worked with her back then, and to see her reach the heights of fame. And here it is 40 years later, and as I sit here watching her perform my heart fell silent again. I am in complete awe of who she is.
The respect that Luke shows to Tracy is so admirable. You can see on his face how humbled he is. Tracy’s voice is just as beautiful now as it was when she first recorded Fast Car. It’s such an iconic song. This is truly a gift to all of us and for all of time.
@V3ganBr33 There's no need to put someone else down in order to attempt to uplift another. There's room both Tracy Chapman and Taylor Swift. If for some reason you prefer the music of one over the other, then listen to what you like. But putting someone else down isn't necessary to give a compliment.
What I like the most about this is how Luke respects and admires her. He's staring at her all the time. He's treating her song as if it was his. No inventions, no versions, no weird stories. Just the song as it was initially composed. Tracy Chapman is pure love, beauty, elegancy, sweetness and sensitivity, but Luke deserves my applause for showing such a devotion and respect. In the midst of so much noise, so much commercial music that all sounds the same, suddenly this comes along and shuts the whole planet up. Everybody knows it, everybody sings it. And that's all it takes. It's appreciated. Very much so.
Yeah absolutely, good catch, she looked totally humbled moved by the reception, seemed like she had tears in her eyes. So well deserved. And he's obviously thrilled to be performing with her, he was watching her with complete adulation while she sang.
So surprised everyone got out of their seat. Taylor Swift stayed up the whole time. No problem respecting their elders at all. This is a great performance.
I totally don’t think that Tracy expected the reaction she got from the audience. That roar when the audience recognized her was INHUMAN. She should have. This song is pure gold, has been for over 35 years, and Combs did an excellent cover of it. Whoever came up with the idea of having Chapman and Combs perform this song together at the Grammys definitely deserves a promotion.
I knew whey would go crazy ,she's legend, but I was thinking they don't even know good music anymore ,so I was happy .I think Luke did a great thing. He brought to people that never heard it . That song still hits u in the gut.I still tear up .
Today I learned that the CMAs awarded her Song of the Year on the day of this performance (first Black woman to receive this award). It was 35 years after this song was originally released. On the same day Luke Combs won Performance of the Year 🥲
This is simply one of the most Iconic Grammy moments I've ever seen. The way the fans rooted for Tracy, the way that Luke was performing and yet still starstruck, the purity of the instruments and the singers... It doesn't get much better than this.
Absolutely. You can be the biggest star of the day and still get starstruck when you just meet one of your favorite singers let alone get to sing one of their iconic songs with them
Probably the best piece of American popular music written in the past 50 years. A story of hardship and heartbreak and hope, beloved the world over regardless of race or generation. The roar of the crowd is a testament to this song's unique and enduring place in American life. What a gift Tracy Chapman has given us!
You need to check out Steve Earle’s music before making a statement like this. Earle is the greatest songwriter in American history. Start at the beginning. 1986’s Guitar Town.
In a time of such divisiveness, it almost brings you to tears seeing two people from two totally different walks of life performing such a timeless song. Chapman wrote one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever, and you can tell that Combs is just totally humbled to share the stage with her. This performance gets you right in the feels on so many levels.
What is most striking about this performance for me is Tracy Chapman's confidence. As a young singer in the '80s, her frail vulnerability made this song feel like it was about false hope. Today when she sings that she's got nothing to prove, I believe it, and the song is transformed into a bittersweet memory of a very difficult time. Amazing then, and amazing today. Luke Combs, for his part, silenced the haters. I haven't heard a peep from all the people claiming that he was somehow ruining the song with his cover. Those complaints were always obviously wrong, but seeing his joy and gratitude and admiration, his eagerness to defer to someone he clearly idolizes, makes them seem positively ridiculous.
I watched Tracy in an interview explain her very early days when she burst onto the music scene it was an overnight success and she wasn't prepared for it and it took some time for her to be comfortable playing in front of very large venues anyhow I hope she goes on tour again she's an incredible song writer and musician .
I’ve seen some people say they changed their mind seeing this duet. Tracy said it all by performing with him and seeing his joy and respect touched some hearts that previously thought the worst of him.
No. It's ok to not like diet Pepsi version of a song. They were well within their rights to not care for the cover. His studio version left a lot of soul on the table and did didn't nothing for me either way but I understand people hearing a cover and rather listen to the original. There is nothing wrong with that.
I'd be honored if some fans of late 70s/early 80s groove would take a listen to my low-fi acoustic piano & vocal performances of SAIL ON by the Commodores, SEPTEMBER by Earth Wind & Fire, and THE PINA COLADA SONG by Rupert Holmes on my YT in tribute to the legends. Imagine standing on stage with her as she starts that guitar strum she's done 100,000 times ...
Yes, their voices compliment each other perfectly ❤ Beautiful performance
Yep!🎉❤
@@Iknowrite411fr they harmonize so well
Who woulda thought. From being sung this song as a young boy. To singing it yourself, then performing the song of your childhood with your idol who made it. LOL life goes crazy.
Luke is looking at Tracy like “did I do good mama”. He is awestruck and I don’t blame him one bit. Living his dream fr

Thirty seconds in as the crowd cheered, you could see her face light up and her eyes smile.
All that GLITZ and GLAMOUR got blown away by a class act of two very talented people quietly telling a timeless story in the form of "Fast Car". 100% BEST at the Grammys in YEARS!!!
Plain, Stripped down as the song was intended. Perfect.
No fakers there. Just good music.
I loved the lack of electronics in the instrumentals. So soothing, and mellow. Not there's anything wrong with electronical music...🙂

Didn't you miss the usual 20 dancers trying to distract from the lack of talent ? LOL. @@Bee-u3m
This performance should be nominated for a Grammy for best duet performance.
Yes, yes yes! so perfect, the 2 of them.
I wouldn’t go that far
@@nataliedigiovanni4863 I would. It is better than most songs that DID win recently. Need we bring up "GIRLS!" by Beyonce? A song where she yelled out 5 words to a beat and still needed 40 producers?
@@nataliedigiovanni4863this duet will be timeless…I second this, amongst best performances ever.
They sounded SO GOOD together. Their voices really complimented each other.
You can tell that Luke gave credit where credits is due.
It feels like such a rarity amongst the big egos of major recording artists.
And having the time of his life too.
Not to mention you can tell on Luke's face how this song and moment both speak to him
Lol he's friggin fanboying and lip syncing her parts. She's definitely a musical inspiration of his.
Agreed 👍
Two humble artists, unlike some that were in that room
This song will for ever make me cry ❤. Grew up with an alcoholic father. My mom always worked hard to provide after he got deported when I was 12. Now I’m 33 and this song hits right in the feels.
Bless you. I admire your strength under such times.
Also, the fact that Luke Combs is awestruck that he is singing with Tracy Chapman and it shows every second of this.
Brings tears to my eyes watching the two of them and their reactions to each other.
Notice his hands “playing” guitar along with her? This was the BEST Grammy Performance!!
Maravilloso
I also noticed during the chorus he decrease his voice level to not supress her. Too much respect!
He was nervous and killed it, honestly this performance is so wholesome I love it so much , Billy Joel is my favourite singer but this is the best thing ever
That moment when the crowd realizes "HOLY COW THAT'S TRACY CHAPMAN!!!!!!" and they collectively loose their mind. 😍
And the huge smile on her face and tears glistening in her eyes. All the Feels. Very well deserved. The blending of voices and the individual voices back and forth then coming together. Magical.
and HER smile when she hears the recognition 🧡
I would lose my shit too I love her so much.
@@PiscesMoon2You I keep rewatching and rewinding just to see her smile.

I remember listening to this song in the backseat and just immediately tearing up at like 9. I'm 31 and shit still gets me. This song is a treasure. She is phenomenal. Glad to hear them both perform it
Her voice, after decades, still gold. Solid gold.

@@mascambios 100%. Not hating on him or anything, I just think that it really ruins the essence that the song has with Tracy singing by herself.
She LITERALLY sounds identical to how she did back then.

According to me this was the best performance of the 2024 Grammys. No attention-seeking, lights, bells and whistles. Just music. Thank you Tracy and Luke.
Just attention seeking taylor swift.
Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and keep on grooving in the '020s.
for me, it was the best ever.
Don’t need a grifter to come along and take credit singing a classic song. Write your own music.
@@finnickrinzler8907 lmao literally all she did here is sing along to a song she loved. I'm not even a Swift stan but I have to step in here and blame the cameraman/producer for insisting on a cutaway lmao

Absolutely spot on. I had no clue who this dude was, but the deference and respect he showed Ms Chapman definitely impressed me.
I grew up with this song, I don’t know that guy, but I’ve never seen anyone with the original singer so respectful, modest and appropriate. Much respect to him

You and I are in the same boat. It's such a beautiful song.
My exact thoughts, I keep watching because it’s just so wholesome ❤❤❤
I thought exactly this. He's clearly having one of the great moments of his life and he's absolutely respectful. This is the video that should be in the manual under "how to perform a duet with the original artist".
He is clearly fangirling! And I love how clearly you can see the admiration and respect for her in his eyes!

Well F'ing said. Just a beautiful, tear inducing performance of a beautiful, tear inducing song.

I am blown away by how Tracy’s voice is just as it was when she first recorded Fast Car. Beautiful performance.
You know what I like about this duet? You can tell that Combs respected Chapman immensely. You get impression that he knows he's singing HER song, and that he's singing WITH her. It seems like, when new artists attempt to perform songs with the original artist, the new artists is performing the song like they wrote it.

I was about 22 when this song came out. The first time hit like a sledgehammer of emotions. To this day, it still makes my eyes leak.

Yes, he couldn't stop turning to watch her and smile. And the "not worthy" bow at the end 😊
She still looks amazing. And her voice still sounds like the first time I heard it in the 80s. Tracy Chapman is a goddamn legend.
That’s the same thing I was thinking and her humility is even more beautiful. I love her!
When you were sure of yourself, you can be humble . . . And that is beauty. Isn’t that what Fast car was all about❤
Rather hear this that Taylor swifts crap any day. Tracy shows how it's done. Without auto tune
@V3ganBr33 There's no need to put someone else down in order to attempt to uplift another. There's room both Tracy Chapman and Taylor Swift. If for some reason you prefer the music of one over the other, then listen to what you like. But putting someone else down isn't necessary to give a compliment.
She is so beautiful here.

I feel like she didn't know just how much this song would mean to people all these years later , shes touched .

True.❤
There's only divisiveness because of idiots. Trump damn sure isn't doing it. The libs did it for profit.
This ❤❤❤
yes yes yes
The only thing that divid us are the powers that want to see us at odds. We in general are not that much different.
The performance didn’t make me cry but this dis! 😊
Well said!!
Luke couldn't believe that he was singing with THE Tracy Chapman. He was like a kid on Christmas!
Yes! It is cute 🥹
I remember when this song came out, driving in my new Trans Am, just out of college. I close my eyes, and I'm there.. ❤❤❤
She looks so happy to see the audience still loves her song.
I just looked up Tracy Chapman tour dates and found out her last tour was 2009, so seeing her live actually is a huge honor
this is the correct amount of reverence, thank you for the lovely reminder of her importance
❤
Think that was around the time of her last album too (Where You Live)! Wish to GOD she'd make a comeback already!
Hands down the best Grammy performance in the past 20 years. This…THIS is music in its most pure form!
Pure magic❤
I'd be honored if some fans of late 70s/early 80s groove would take a listen to my low-fi acoustic piano & vocal performances of SAIL ON by the Commodores, SEPTEMBER by Earth Wind & Fire, and THE PINA COLADA SONG by Rupert Holmes on my YT in tribute to the legends. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace and keep on grooving in the '020s.
AMEN ❤❤❤
💯
Can't agree more!
This is THE only cover that hits every time! You can tell that he is so excited to be sharing a stage with one of his idols. Any artist out there was a fan first!!!!
Im a 90s kid, so I grew up with Chapman's version, but I gotta admit Luke got it right too by not changing anything about the song, its pace, anything. Them together, magic man. This song will be remembered for decades to come
I’m a 60s kid and I loved it too back in the 80s. Great to see Tracy again, and with a younger singer who honored her song by bringing it to a younger generation.
He recorded it in a different key and perform Tracy’s key to honor and respect her.
His story about the meaning this song has had for him and the preparation for this performance floats around TH-cam somewhere.
There is something delightful about watching Luke mouthing the words whilst Tracy is singing. Lost in silent accompaniment.
or maybe he's just lip singing the whole thing and forgot it's not his turn.
@@johndorian4078 He's not facing the microphone when he's doing it and his lips aren't moving enough to be believable if that's what he was doing, so probably not lol
@@johndorian4078he’s keeping time and staying in the moment lol, not everything is a conspiracy
if he needs to do that to keep time he's a bigger loser than you are!@@goodoljr1
lol was thinking the same thing
I'll never get tired of watching this performance! Her excitement at hearing the crowd cheering for her, him looking over at her in awe and with so much respect. Truly a performance that will stand the test of time, and one of the best ever on the Grammys IMO.
So wonderful to see the inimitable Tracy Chapman perform. Luke seems in awe of singing with his idol. Beautiful performance!
