What a great and soulful performance!
I missed the Grammy Awards and could kick myself.
I was 38 and raising my two kids back in 1988.
I remember this song with its dreams and yearning.
It sounds as poignant today to my 73 year old soul as it did back in the day.
Thanks for posting this incredible duet.

@@melm4730 Thanks. I’m counting on it surfacing on TH-cam or elsewhere.
      It was quite a moment…
I get the digital version of the NYT. I saw a headline of an article yesterday, Where Has Tracy Chapman Been? I’d like to know, too. Life tumbled along and she and the song had essentially vaporized from my consciousness. A third child and everything that comes with that will do it t’ ya…

It’s not that I didn’t find Tracy Chapman a new voice, but suddenly she was gone, perhaps in a “Fast Car” and we just couldn’t catch her at the next rest stop.

I have loved this song since 1988. I was a 33 year old mom with two sons & a husband. When Tracy came out with the her song it didn’t really relate to me. It actually did, I think a lot of us wanted to go away in a Fast Car sometimes in our younger days. Luke Combs has done a great cover so a new generation could discover the song. I love the way they sang it together .

It was 1988 and I bought Tracy Chapman's LP, "Fast Car". I lived in Atlanta and I would play it over and over again.
In 1989, I had a ticket to somewhere
I knew any place was better than where I was at the time
I, too, was starting from ground zero and truly had nothing to lose
I was going to make something of myself
Because I had something to prove
I had a plan to get out of there
But I would have to drive far
    960 miles, to be exact
I'd cross the Georgia border and into another city
I'd start a new job and finally see what it means to be living
My car was fast enough for me to fly away
I made a decision so I would not have to live & die that way
My decision involved leaving someone I cared about
But knowing that what we had (or what we didn't have) would not be enough to sustain me in my life...

I received a call last summer from a mutual friend who told me she committed suicide. Tragic.

There are very few song remakes that are any good at all to those of us that have been around long enough to hear the original.
THIS is a true exception! And for BOTH to be singing it together just knocks it right out of the universe!
One of the other rare remakes is Simon and Garfunkels Sound of Silence performed by Disturbed! For a pair of 66 year old ears these two remakes ride the express route right deep into my soul!💕💕

I have been listening to the feedback on this performance with all the speculation on the artists, their gender, race, even the sexuality was commented on CNN..... What makes this song resonate so deeply now in 2024 ? Why now? The song itself, the message of yearning and hope and desperation and the realization that life is bittersweet and its so often filled with nothing but unrealized dreams. I was 20 years old in 1988..I walking back from class listening to a mixtape my girlfriend had put together . I sat down on the steps of my apartment and bawled my eyes out because i felt the desperation of trying to make a life.. make choices... to find myself in the world .. the frustration of wanting to go and be something anything anyone.... Im 55 now... and the song hits me just as hard now in 2024 as it did in 1988. This song like Rich Men North of Richmond- hits because it is devoid of the political filter , the cultural bias speaks to the human condition and the human soul... I was in into Guns and Roses, Metallica, Ozzy etc.... but later that afternoon I took what little money I had and bought her album/cassette... and listened to it because it was crafted and sung by a woman who was... this is the key word here.... AUTHENTIC.

Me and my brother, my other brother and our best friend were drinking her passion with her purple passion sunglasses on riding around in the powerlines for wheeling and listening to this song
It was the best memory I’ve held dear to me all these years Tracy Chapman song stayed with me all these years as a favorite
I’ve listen to it on road trips. I listen to it sitting at home and when Luke Combs re did it, I love that as well but the two of you can bind it’s just a magical touch.
Reminding me of a memory, that was a favorite and will always be a favorite memory, my whole life ❤️🙌🏼

I love how they both own this song. Reminds me of when Adam Lambert sang Chers "Do You Believe In Life After Love!" I love when another artist can also own a song and make as amazing as the original performer. I feel it is the largest compliment anyone can give the original artist.

It was fall 1996 when I heard this song. I was only 14 years old. My friends here in Canada played Luke's version. And I called it saying "Tracy Chapman" man, oh man. A lot of nostalgia over here after almost 30 years after.

The crazy thing is that it has been remade in a big song in hip hop by nice and smooth. That gives you an idea of how influential this song has become.

This song has crossed generations and all music genres. From the first pluck of her guitar string, I can close my eyes and feel my body swaying slowing…standing at my sink with three kids pulling on me…and me wanting to be someone…I think she made us all feel like we wanted to be someone…still to this day I feel the same as the girl who only wanted to belong!
