      You’re 16 & beautiful” by Ringo Star. “Venus” by Paul Anka. “Venus if you will please send a little girl for me to thrill”

    Stupid Girls is still an amazing song. If you think it's main purpose is to tear women down you aren't paying attention to the song. It's goal it to tell women to not rely on looks or focus on society's standards for beauty. It is trying to bring positivity to girls, to teach them it's ok to be smart, to play sports if you want, and empowers girls and women to go against the "norm" which has historically been seen as a bad thing. It's an amazing song and still hold weight today.

    Even back when I was a child I understood the message of "Stupid Girls". It's saying that you should work hard to become successful, and not depend on your appearance or sexual attributes (because people will take advantage of you and see you as an object), and there's also a warning about beauty standards and how they lead people to develop body image issues and eating disorders. That's all. She's telling women to acquire more knowledge and become independent. It's not degrading.
    Edit: There's also a critique of the superficiality of celebrity culture. Women are more than their bodies and shouldn't need to act a certain way to get attention or to progress in life.
    (Paris Hilton, for example, declared that she acted dumb on purpose because it got people talking about her). By the way, I'm not shaming anybody for wanting to be sexy, my point was that Pink was warning girls about objectification and complaining about the oversexed society we were living in the mid 00s.
    By the way, I never liked "Blurred Lines", always found it weird.

      THIS!!!! I think "stupid girls" did actually age pretty well and can still be used as a critique on how social media in general still likes to see girls as superficial and dumb and make them think that by only looking pretty they'll get anything (instagram, maybe?) and that they need to look a certain way to be accepted, let's also remember how celebrities had to look stupid to have people talking about them or sometimes that's the image their labels forced them to have. I don't think Pink was making fun of other women or even reducing them to "what men want" i think she was empowering girls to be better for themselves and not give in any stupid trend like this BBL stuff or the "Kylie Jenner lips" or even s+xualizing themselves on social media.
      About "blurred lines" ugh, i always thought it was a stupid song, sounds dumb, the lyrics are trash, the music video is cringey and that "#thicke" every 2 seconds is painfully cringey. XD

    I spent a semester as a teaching assistant in the English department back in the day. We had to take this course that essentially served as a support group for teaching assistants, most of whom were teaching for the first time in our lives. When we ran into problems, we'd air them in this support group type class and get feedback from the professor and our classmates.
    One day, our professor wanted to teach us about "kitsch" because he felt that it was something that we should learn to spot in our student's papers. So he devoted an entire mini-lecture to dissecting and berating the lyrics to "Do they know it's Christmas"? to show us how it was an example of kitsch.
    This was twenty-some years ago. So the song was getting a bad rap from some people even back then.
    Not to mention that "Blurred Lines" got a bad rap from many of my Facebook friends as soon as it came out.

      @jimbo9208 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      and what are those songs

    • @HighHeelKnight
      @HighHeelKnight ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimbo9208 Well first, I will acknowledge that part of the problem is what can be considered a "pop song." If a traditionally R&B or Country song that earns high rankings on the pop charts, then is that song also a "pop song?" If so, then songs like Bell Biv Devoe's DO ME! and nearly every country song that extreme revenge for scorned romance (Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheats, Dixie Chicks' Good-Bye Ear, etc) would easily be contenders for a Not Aged Well List.
      Next are songs that could be considered "pop songs" for their respective eras, like The Beatles I Saw Her Standing There and various other classic songs about 16-year-old girls.
      Finally, there are songs on MsMojo's list that just plain shouldn't have been featured.
      As the narrator mentioned, Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines was controversial from day one. It was always a problematic song, so how could it really have aged poorly?
      Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? is on the list because it generalized Africa. Even in 2023, you'd be lucky to host a general public survey about about Africa and encounter people that can name more than three countries on the contentment. If our so-called inclusive society of today barely knows about the numerous cultures of Africa, the how can MsMojo throw shade on musicians form the 1980s?
      Pink's Stupid Girls has not aged poorly. If anything, the song and video continues to be relevant. For one thing, women have historically found themselves having to "dumb down" their abilities, opinions, and accomplishments in order to be accepted in a male dominated society. Pink song is about a woman that refuses to lower her standards, especially for the entertainment of others. Typing of entertainment, the music video parodied the "stupid" antics of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson. However, you could replace the celebrity parody segments for segments of young people doing absurd TikTok, TH-cam, and social media challenges, and the music video' would be just as comedically and socially relevant.

    Well many of this ecamples show how artists change their mind and the way they see things and how times change, I bet those 15-20 years ago most people didn't see anything wrong with the message of some of those songs.

    A song mocking Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan is taking power away from women? You think Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan are a good role models? They literally served jail time.
