When Donna Summer comes in you can hear the music change that would create the sound of the 80’s. When David Bowie heard it he said basically that this was something new and a game changer.

I guess we liked different music. It wasn't so much Donna Summer for me. She was still classic disco. Heart of Glass by Blondie was close to disco, but the band was known as a punk band. Pop Music by M showed early techno influence. My Sharona by the Knack was seen as a return to rock. Their first album was so popular that people were talking they might be the next Beatles.
Then it happened, July 12, 1979, "the day disco died." At a Chicago White Sox game in Comisky Park, you could get in for less than $1 if you turned in a disco record. Between games of a double header, they literally blew up the records, leaving a small crater in center field. The crowd went nuts.
Not sure how much of that was Donna Summer and how much of that was Giorgio Maroder. In other words the production had as much of an influence as the vocals did.
Gorgio morodor and Kraftwerk inspired groups like depeche mode, human league etc
80s had such variety, lots nothing related to disco

I was a teenager in the 70s, and I collected hit songs on 45-RPM records throughout the decade. I have thousands of them. I was surprised to hear a few songs on here that I don't remember ever hearing before.

I was born in 1971 so I grew up with this music, that's probably why I like it. Most people born after 1980 don't like 70's music, except the Bee Gees lol

I turned 12 in 70 so we came up on the same music era. They were great!!
My dad liked "seasons of the sun" every night when we drove to the shore and fished that song would come on and he'd turn it up a bit. He passed away in September of this year and I don't think I could listen to it without shedding some tears here and there

Thanks for reaction to the biggest hits of the 70s. I was an 80s kid myself but the 70s was a phenomenal decade for music. Some people say it's the best decade and I can see why. It was so diverse. I particularly love how soulful this decade was.

"Spirit in the Sky" would make my father dance around the living room, and us kids would just be dying...and its one of my best childhood memories. The music of the 70's and 80's will never be beat

This reaction took me from my 4th year to my 14th year. From Listening to the songs of my parents, through glam rock and up to the dying whimpers of the first wave of punk. I knew exactly what I was doing when each song came out.

Memories. Love the 50s,60s,and the 70s. Born in the mid 50s,so ,really sweet memories for me. As tfor Chicago,after Terry Kath died,their musical style changed. The Beegees dominated 60s and 70s. They put out a ton of music.
Not only did the Beegees put out a ton of music, but in the 70s and 80s they wrote a lot more that was a massive success.

I'm 50 and so impressed with your knowledge. Being born in '72 I knew a lot but there were a few I didn't know.
Back in the 90s I was on a train, with a lot of school kids getting on at different stations, 2 kids sitting behind me and their friends got on & one of them said "did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings" to which I turned around and said "yea they were called the Beatles, with John Lennon, Jorge Harrison & Ringo Starr."
One of them said "McCartney and Lennon, it must have been a good band," & I said"yes asked your parents they probably still have some of their records, & before the Beatles John & Paul were in a band called the 4 quarry men when they were your age & still at school."

Lucky you, I was born in 1997 but thanks to the internet, I can explore all these great period of music whenever I want, but I am sad I never have a chance to see live concert at their peak.

So many of these songs are still my favs, even though I was too young to remember when they first come out since I was born in the early 70's. Really digging on these memories from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Great stuff!

Helen Reddy had alot of hits in the '70's, and "Angie Baby" was a great song with an interesting lyric

Helen Reddy was born in Australia. She won a tv talent show in Australia in 1966 (when she was 25). The prize was a trip to New York and a record audition. She didn’t land a record deal the first time around. She eventually made it in 1968 after moving to Chicago and then LA.
Bacarra's "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" even today is a massive song. In the UK at football matches it's typically played during the intervals and literally everyone gets up on their feet and belts it out lol.
Thanks for your comments Jay. For everybody the 70ties have a different meaning. For the young guys it is a discovery tour, for the old it is music from when they where young, and from middle ages persons as myself, its like hearing the radio on the background from my childhood. Too young to understand english and the lyrics but old enough to absorb all that melodies. I lot of them I hear again the first time since over 40 years now. Thank you very much! Music was a generation thing, but somehow it seems all melting together, young people listen to older music and I never stopped to listen to new music as well. Somethimes I miss those days when I was hearing a song on the radio, try to get a pencil to write down (part) of the song or artist, and then on saterday jumped to the record shop to listen to the record and buy it. It is so convient now to digg into all the music that has been ever made. Its fantastic and a pitty at the same time.
That was awesome! Thank you! From age 11 to to 22, there were only 6 or 7 I never heard. But the rest brought back so many memories - both good and bad. I loved my music and so enjoy watching you hear my faves and reacting is wonderful. Love this channel!

Mull of Kintyre is a must listen to, it was the best selling song in the UK from 77-85
1978 brought you two John Travolta films, the first being Saturday Night Fever with the Bee Gees doing the soundtrack, hence you had How Deep Is Your Love in January, Stayin' Alive in February and Night Fever in April. In the second part of the year, Grease was the big movie with You're The One That I Want in August and Frankie Valli in September with Grease Is The Word. The other songs that came from Grease were Summer Nights, Greased Lightning and Hopelessly Devoted To You, all worth a listen. It may also be worth you watching both of these films.
Indeed, decontextualising the music from its time like this, means you miss a lot of what was going on. How these tunes, that you mention specifically, interspersed with Abba (and Boney M to be fair) and then led into the chart dominance of disco and then that backlash against it, which we only really see the start of at the end... elsewhere, little groupings of singles, which were basically album releases, and sometimes linked to movies - even that first track in Jan 70, Raindrops keep failing on my head... was that Butch and Sundance? It's great people get to experience them again, but I still think the movies they came from, the albums they came from, the movements they came from would be more beneficial to understanding what was going on etc.
Brotherhood of Man, for example... THAT needs contextualising!!!

I did love the 70's music and Leo Sayer is a great favourite of mine, I love his voice and how I can hear each word he sings. So many songs and singers I have forgotten that I enjoyed but thanks to you I am reminded and that's a great gift sweetheart. And for Chicago ... you might be mistaking them for the Doobie Brothers. They were rock early in the 70's and then got really mello in the late 70's (which was a mistake)

I "grew up" in the 70's. Lived on a small horse farm. Out in the big barn I had a radio, yes, a radio. And I had it on all the time, some of these songs brought pure agony to my ears. Especially after hearing them over, and over, and over.............................. Some were great though. I could always pop Ted Nugent into my 8-track player. I had one of the first "portable" ones.
Being born in 57 I know most of these. My favorite are the 60 & 70 greatest hits along with one's of Country Music and other types.
Great stuff, my friend! Having been a teenager throughout the 1970s, I'm pretty sure this list is the top songs for here in the UK. Hence the likes of Cliff Richard, Middle of the Road, Brotherhood of Man etc.

After Terry Kath died Chicago definitely changed their sound.

The Partridge Family was actually a popular 70s show which the kids are not playing lol but the blonde woman that plays their mother which her name is Shirley and the guy that’s singing does sing which his name is David Cassidy and he was the teen idol from the 70s I Think I Love You was one of his biggest songs hopefully you get to react to some of his songs cuz he does got good songs from Partridge Family and as a his solo artist ☺️

Just watched your If You Leave Me Now Chicago reaction. The biggest hit of 1976 (maybe 1977 forget the official accolade). 1976 and 1977 were amazing. ABBA and Bee Gees everyday back then. Franki Valli Grease Theme Song is great!
'The Morning After' by Maureen McGovern was featured in the movie, The Poseidon Adventure, and both were huge hits! There's a movie to react to!!

"Seasons In The Sun" is sad but it is also joyful when you realize he is recalling the joy they had before the time of death came. It is a celebration on their life together. A song that makes you think of what you have done and with who before they died or your own death. What will others reflect on when you are gone becomes the question.
I was just a kid when that song came out ,but it always made me feel kind of sad even so.Such a sweet tune with lots of meaning.STill enjoy it today.

I was born in '69 so the songs were an integral part of me growing up and they were always in the background on the radio in our apartment. Helen Reddy is a must! I can remember being 3 years old up at a cottage and my mummy now 82 dancing around with me in the kitchen to the song You and Me Against the World. I had no way of knowing at the age of 33 with two children her entire world had just Fallen apart.

I'm biased being a teenager in the 70s, but was a great decade of music IMO. Yes, do a reaction video on Venus sung by Shocking Blue (a Dutch group) loved ABBA, Bee Gees, Donna Summer and all disco!!

Cliff Richard my favourite loved him from being 9 yrs old he is 81 now and still touring his dvd 80's tour has been number one for 8 weeks so glad I got to go see him it was brilliant sounds just the same ( eighties meaning his 80 th birthday tour which was delayed due to covid so he 81 when he got to do his tour )

My first young babysitter introduced my siblings and me to more youthcentric secular music with Pop Muzik. LOVED it!
I was a baby in 72, so I had a wonderful child hood.. I have pictures of me dancing to the radio. Mom said I always danced when music came on.

There were a ton of one hit wonders in there in the 70s, but I can name you dozens of artist in both the 60s and 70s who had huge hits but were not the top hit of any particular month. Many of them just got bumped out of the top spot by those artist who dominated the charts for the time period, like the Beatles, Elvis, The BeeGees, Abba, and others. Artist whom you may not even be aware of like The Grass Roots, Badfinger, The Band, The Bangles, Billy Idol, Billy Joe Royal, Billy Squire, Blue Oyster Cult, Bob Seger, Bon Jovi, The Buckinghams, Carly Simon, Carole King, The Cars, Cat Stevens, Christie, Classics Four, Bobby Fuller Four, The Cowsills.
That doesn't even scratch the surface of all the great artist out there you haven't reacted to. But keep it up Javon. You'll get there eventually. 👍
If you like Rod Stewart's voice, I would recommend Bonnie Tyler - It's a Heartache and Lost In France and Elkie Brooks - Sunshine After The Rain and Pearl's A Singer. Some more 70's I think you will like The Selecter - On My Radio, Kate Bush Wow, Street Life Randy Crawford & The Crusaders (Play the long version) and A Taste Of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie

The Partridge Family started as a TV show, but several songs like this were done on the show, and made it big.
This list was put together by them being the #1 song in sales in the US, and maybe across the pond as well. It wasn't just a haphazard guess.
Another 70s song to possibly add to the list- Cockney Rebel's "Sebastian." So pretty.
I had that album with the 13 minute version of Sebastian; used to drive my dad crazy as I played it over and over.

As with the 1980s this was a list made from the UK. It's amazing to me that Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours," still one of the best-selling albums of all time, didn't deliver have the same success outside the US.
It's about individual tracks. "Only" Dreams made #1 in either country (The U.S.), and that was for one week, so it might not even have been the biggest song of that month in the U.S. either.
Great album, though I prefer the Peter Green era music.

Definitely check out Clapton's "I shot the Sheriff." Clapton's first hit group began with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Blues Breakers (Roots of Mayall/lots of key names came through this raw Harmonicist's lips. . . back to CREAM (Classic Heavy Rock!!! Psychedelic [Blue Cheer was my personal group of choice w/six LP's. "Fruits & Icebergs"] . . . more Clapton, Blind Faith (meh), Derek & The Dominos (Super Classic) . . . Clapton had a great single LP career. Was considered GOAT, by many. . . . (Hendrix, for me; Stevie Ray; VanHalen )

Sadly.. These lists don't recognize the biggest artists. I believe these are off radio play time. For example by 1973 Led Zeppelin had released 5 albums and were the biggest freakin band the world had EVER SEEN at that point. But media hated them. 300 million albums sold but couldn't get radio time because the stations were afraid of backlash.
I don't think it is radio play either. I don't think there really is any method whatsoever. I've watched both the 60s and 70s version of these and Stevie Wonder does not appear on either of them. He would be all over these lists if they were based on radio airplay. To say I am somewhat suspicious of whatever method whoever compiled these videos used to decide what songs to include and what songs not to include is putting it very mildly.
Back then, if you looked in Billboard, it said words to the effect of: "based on sales of singles" ie-45s. I always knew that was screwed in the head, because educated/sophisticated listeners were buying primarily LPs (albums).
Led Zeppelin got a ton of time on the radio in the 1970s. Even on AM radio. They didn't release a lot of singles, though, so they weren't top 40 for AM radio. But they certainly got a lot of airplay,
consider the fact that stairway was the most requested song on fm radio in history says a lot for the greatness of led zeppelin. they ruled the 70,s

I was born in 1970. These are the songs I was raised on. Plus, during this period, if you turn on the rock station, not only would they play the latest hits, but lots of 60s and 50s classics too. Greatest time ever for music.
