The 70s was a great time to be young and listening to music in the UK. Just about anybody from any genre could have a Top Ten Hit. If they had talent. From country, rock or soul, it didn't matter.

This band only 'sung' full playback, similar as Millie Vanillie, another popular 'full playback' band by Frank Farian. Frank Farian actually died a few days ago. 70s music was great. Yet I think the 80s still got it beat - more variety and creativity. Still at the end of the 80s things started to turn bad with "manufactured artists" popping up (Astley and Minogue, "manufactured" by SAW, comes to mind).
Melanie (featured in this list with her hit "brand new key" and who got known after she performed at woodstock at 22 yo, has passed away a few days ago on the 23th at age 76 In 2022 she came to the netherlands to perform live. She was still performing at age 76 what a legend. R.I.P Melanie

I was born in 1948….so the music of the 60s, 70s and some of the 80s stuff was exceptional! Then my musical taste broadened out to include more musical genres. Including classical. One of my current favourites is your own Home Free! Saw them in Birmingham,U.K. in September…superb!

Pretty great line-up, you can see Abba and Bee Gees really picking up steam. I don't think Rolling Stones are better than The Beatles, The Beatles wrote the Stones first hit. They were friends, the closest thing to a rivalry was probably The Stones being originally billed as the 'bad boy' alternative to them. All 4 Beatles had solo hits, where you saw their individual strengths and weaknesses, but they were greater together. The best way to understand their greatness is probably listening to the musical progression of their albums, particularly from 1965-69, from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road they were unstoppable.

This was my era. i had a blast enjoying it with you.
Beatles overestimated! Every record they made there was something that had never been done before. They broke the mould for ever. You grew up in a musical world in which their influence is inescapable.

You should also do the '60s and '80s compilations of these at least (I know you seemed a bit negative about the '80s, but give it a try - you might be pleasantly surprised at how many iconic songs there are and how good they still sound today). You're right about how fascinating it is to see transitions too - not just of hairstyles, but of fashions and general trends in musical presentation, dancing, etc.
I started out thinking this was in America, and then it got weird with songs that weren't hits there... reading the blurb under the original video, it seems it's an attempt to do an international list using chart placings from lots of different countries. Kinda props to them for giving it a go, I guess.
Before you say the Beatles are overrated try stuff like Helter Skelter, A Day In the Life, and Tomorrow never Knows. The Beatles were the creators of many of the modern day genres. In fact, listen to the whole of the white album and see just how many genres they perform with total ease and then tell me they are overrated.
It seems Gen Z have a very narrow corridor of “music” they listen to,whereas we in the 70’s would play a whole album all the way through and have a very eclectic library of music. I was forced to listen to the top 10 the other day and it was awful in the extreme. No variety,no creativity,all computerised gimmicks. Bob Seger got it spot on,todays music ain’t got no soul.

I would put the Beatles just ahead of the Stones because of the sheer volume of great songs & the way the Beatles experimented & changed music forever. With the help of the Great Sir George Martin (whose background was in classical music). But I absolutely love the Stones. But John Lennon was so talented. A true great. I personally don't have a favourite band. Far too many fantastic bands. It all depends on what mood you're in, while listening to music.
The problem with not knowing the artists behind the music is of course that it makes it more difficult to find more music of a similar kind that you like. Otherwise, I agree with most people here, the seventies (and sixties) were about musicians and music, not about image, production, technical aids and marketing. Most of the artists on this list wrote their own music and were talented (or great) instrumentalists and singers. Today, chart music is mostly about big labels with massive marketing resources and streamlined factory-produced muzak where a lack of talent is easily hidden behind technical aids such as auto-tune etc.
Ahead of time usually means that they were pioneers of some genre. Then there are those that do something so different that it bypasses time completely, creating a parallel timeline. She has been an inspiration to a LOT of artists but has anyone done the same, made songs like was on The Kick Inside album? She is her own genre. BTW, David Gilmour produced that album, she had some major names backing her up at the time. Not a surprise, i've head demo version of Wuthering Heights and it is clear immediately that she is something entirely different, making something that the world has to hear, no matter the costs. Very significant album in music history, but also, very unique. Her later albums are great but the first one is special. If i believed in spirits, they would be involved. The way she uses chord progressions and melody is just amazing, they are worth a deeper study if you are a musician.

*70s and 80s were definitely not carefree times* Vietnam War, Watergate, Three Mile Island Accident, Tenerife Airport Disaster, US Embassy in Iran taken hostage, Falklands War, Chernobyl Disaster to name just a handful... As a young teen in the 1980s, I wondered why we never heard much from Donna Summer. She had a few hits that were all top notch. Only a few years ago I found out she made a lot more music but it's just that most of the lyrics were 'very adult.'

I always laugh when people say "Beatles were overrated". They're still getting new fans today, still listened to and beloved by millions and their latest single went straight to No.1(not bad for a group that formed 63 years ago). The word "overrated" is meaningless anyway, as it's based on subjective opinion.

Correct - the 70's was the disco era. Great to see you boogie along! And yes, that was Paul McCartney on a couple of clips. He had a successful run with his band 'Wings' after the Beatles' split. I agree that the 70's & 80's felt more care free - but perhaps it was because I was younger then.
I was impressed (as a stereotypical Eurovision fan) by how many songs on the list were from Eurovision contestants: ABBA of course, but also Brotherhood of Man, Olivia Newton John, and Cliff Richard. Also, more British acts than I expected on a global list (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, Elton John, Brotherhood of Man, Bay City Rollers, Kate Bush, Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton John, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Andy Gibb, possibly others I missed)
Not everyone was a singer/songwriter, even in the 70's. Elton only wrote the music, not the lyrics, for example and many of the songs in this vid were not written by the artistes who performed them. Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman were the Stock Aitken Waterman of the 70's and wrote huge numbers of hits through into the 90's, with Blondie and Huey Lewis as just two of their customers. It's a mistake to think of all artistes of the era as writing their own songs, though quite a number did. The Beatles was one of the first bands that did write their own songs, and they wrote songs for other artistes, but even they did covers on their first few albums. Help had 2 covers on it as well.
The singles were one thing, but the best music was on the LPs and the late 60s, early 70s were phenomenal. From your reactions I gather your music listening is very US artists orientated. For some great music of that era, check out English band Hawkwind and their 'Space is Deep' track from their Doremi Fasol Latido album, or indeed their 'Silver Machine' single (both 1972).
North Londoner born in 1970 here. That is quite literally the soundtrack of my (very early) life. I remember liking In The Summertime very early and I was 6 months old when it was released. Nothing beats I Feel Love though, that's arguably the most revolutionary song in the last half century.
Cher has had #1 songs in the past 7 decades. You are only hearing small clips of these songs so have to hear them in full Andy Gibb was the youngest brother of the guys in the Bee Gees, he unfortunately died of a drug overdose. David Soul was an actor who was most famous from thr show Starsky&Hutch.
😢 Andy Gibb did _not_ die of a drug overdose... He died from myocarditis... (admittedly following time with drug & alcohol addiction)... He died about a week or two after his 30th birthday... Andy's autopsy / post mortem showed no traces of drugs in his system at the time of his sad, and unexpected demise.😢
Brits laughing at Cliff Richard turning up at the end. A controversial figure in some respects, he's had No.1 singles here in every decade from the 1950s to the 2000's. I'm not sure if that indicates success or a cult....

another note, the channel that produced this video pulled a variety, not necessarily top, songs. Bony M & Bocarra were on the charts most likely in Europe, but weren't here. The rest of the songs are within the right timeline but there were other top hits ignored for Bony M, Bocarra, Wings (the odd ballady song with him on the guitar in a farm scene that isn't on any chart i could find for this year). Another side note, David Soul (DON'T GIVE UP ON US BABY) just passed. he was part of the tv show Starsky & Hutch, nothing to do with that travesty of a movie that was made!
There are a few artists missed here eg The Eagles, T Rex, Boz Scaggs, Mud, Joe Jackson, Steely Dan, Squeeze, Pink Floyd, The Who. It was funny seeing Rupert Holmes looking like an accountant doing Karaoke at the firm’s annual Christmas Party though.
They weren't missed, they just didn't have the most popular song in any given month during the 1970s. Pink Floyd was very much an album band and hardly released any singles but perhaps Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 might feature at the very start of a similar video about the most popular songs of the 1980s? I seem to recall it was a Christmas No. 1 in the UK in 1979 and topped the charts for several weeks so it might have been the best selling song in January 1980.
If you read the description on the original video the compiler says it’s not songs in the US or UK it’s from all over, they didn’t want to repeat any songs and admits it’s 100% accurate
The 1970s was an amazing decade to live through, Connor. Though just a small child at the start, and a decidedly troubled school-leaver at the end, who never had the confidence to be part of the in-crowd at school and therefore enjoy all the big hits at the time; I certainly remember and feel that I know all of these songs - and many more that never made it to the number one spot! I well remember Eve Graham and the New Seekers, teaching the world to sing and then telling us that Coke was the real thing, Roy Wood wishing it could be Christmas everyday; the newly-appointed Queen Sonja of Sweden hiotting the headlines as the real Dancing Queen, at her wedding ball; and the compromise that allowed girls to wear dark trousers instead of skirts at school, providing they wore their school ties (all of which followed-on from Bay City Roller-mania, that made tartan fashionable again); and doing the3 Slosh at the school disco!! It was a decade of industrial unrest, power cuts, poverty, strikes, shortages, and massive unemployment - and yet, the very best music emerges in those times and it is memorable in ways that no other compares with. It was when this racist and sexist nation began looking at itself differently - though that would be a much longer process that anyone imagined, and if you look at those musicians now, you'll see the beginnings of today's gender politics emerging for the first time too. It should have been the springboard to modern Britain and would have been - had it not been for what followed. But that's another decade, and another story!

I would put the Beatles just ahead of the Stones because of the sheer volume of great songs & the way the Beatles experimented & changed music forever. With the help of the Great Sir George Martin (whose background was in classical music). But I absolutely love the Stones. But John Lennon was so talented. A true great. I personally don't have a favourite band. Far too many fantastic bands. It all depends on what mood you're in, while listening to music.
The problem with not knowing the artists behind the music is of course that it makes it more difficult to find more music of a similar kind that you like.
Otherwise, I agree with most people here, the seventies (and sixties) were about musicians and music, not about image, production, technical aids and marketing. Most of the artists on this list wrote their own music and were talented (or great) instrumentalists and singers.
Today, chart music is mostly about big labels with massive marketing resources and streamlined factory-produced muzak where a lack of talent is easily hidden behind technical aids such as auto-tune etc.

Ahead of time usually means that they were pioneers of some genre. Then there are those that do something so different that it bypasses time completely, creating a parallel timeline. She has been an inspiration to a LOT of artists but has anyone done the same, made songs like was on The Kick Inside album? She is her own genre.
BTW, David Gilmour produced that album, she had some major names backing her up at the time. Not a surprise, i've head demo version of Wuthering Heights and it is clear immediately that she is something entirely different, making something that the world has to hear, no matter the costs. Very significant album in music history, but also, very unique. Her later albums are great but the first one is special. If i believed in spirits, they would be involved. The way she uses chord progressions and melody is just amazing, they are worth a deeper study if you are a musician.

As a young teen in the 1980s, I wondered why we never heard much from Donna Summer. She had a few hits that were all top notch.
Only a few years ago I found out she made a lot more music but it's just that most of the lyrics were 'very adult.'

I always laugh when people say "Beatles were overrated". They're still getting new fans today, still listened to and beloved by millions and their latest single went straight to No.1(not bad for a group that formed 63 years ago). The word "overrated" is meaningless anyway, as it's based on subjective opinion.

I was impressed (as a stereotypical Eurovision fan) by how many songs on the list were from Eurovision contestants: ABBA of course, but also Brotherhood of Man, Olivia Newton John, and Cliff Richard. Also, more British acts than I expected on a global list (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, Elton John, Brotherhood of Man, Bay City Rollers, Kate Bush, Cliff Richard, Olivia Newton John, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Andy Gibb, possibly others I missed)

Not everyone was a singer/songwriter, even in the 70's. Elton only wrote the music, not the lyrics, for example and many of the songs in this vid were not written by the artistes who performed them. Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman were the Stock Aitken Waterman of the 70's and wrote huge numbers of hits through into the 90's, with Blondie and Huey Lewis as just two of their customers. It's a mistake to think of all artistes of the era as writing their own songs, though quite a number did. The Beatles was one of the first bands that did write their own songs, and they wrote songs for other artistes, but even they did covers on their first few albums. Help had 2 covers on it as well.

Many of those songs were the background sound track to my childhood. Music was just better and had more variety back then.

The singles were one thing, but the best music was on the LPs and the late 60s, early 70s were phenomenal. From your reactions I gather your music listening is very US artists orientated. For some great music of that era, check out English band Hawkwind and their 'Space is Deep' track from their Doremi Fasol Latido album, or indeed their 'Silver Machine' single (both 1972).

North Londoner born in 1970 here. That is quite literally the soundtrack of my (very early) life. I remember liking In The Summertime very early and I was 6 months old when it was released. Nothing beats I Feel Love though, that's arguably the most revolutionary song in the last half century.
So, first you confuse the Beatles with Simon and Garfunkel and then you list “Morrison” as a Beatle when he was lead singer for the Doors……..

David Soul was an actor who was most famous from thr show Starsky&Hutch.
😢 Andy Gibb did _not_ die of a drug overdose... He died from myocarditis... (admittedly following time with drug & alcohol addiction)... He died about a week or two after his 30th birthday... Andy's autopsy / post mortem showed no traces of drugs in his system at the time of his sad, and unexpected demise.😢

another note, the channel that produced this video pulled a variety, not necessarily top, songs. Bony M & Bocarra were on the charts most likely in Europe, but weren't here. The rest of the songs are within the right timeline but there were other top hits ignored for Bony M, Bocarra, Wings (the odd ballady song with him on the guitar in a farm scene that isn't on any chart i could find for this year). Another side note, David Soul (DON'T GIVE UP ON US BABY) just passed. he was part of the tv show Starsky & Hutch, nothing to do with that travesty of a movie that was made!
There are a few artists missed here eg The Eagles, T Rex, Boz Scaggs, Mud, Joe Jackson, Steely Dan, Squeeze, Pink Floyd, The Who. It was funny seeing Rupert Holmes looking like an accountant doing Karaoke at the firm’s annual Christmas Party though.
They weren't missed, they just didn't have the most popular song in any given month during the 1970s.
Pink Floyd was very much an album band and hardly released any singles but perhaps Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 might feature at the very start of a similar video about the most popular songs of the 1980s? I seem to recall it was a Christmas No. 1 in the UK in 1979 and topped the charts for several weeks so it might have been the best selling song in January 1980.
Slade a notable exception . They seem to have missed out quite a few TOTP. chart regulars , not that Most of these aren't great .
If you read the description on the original video the compiler says it’s not songs in the US or UK it’s from all over, they didn’t want to repeat any songs and admits it’s 100% accurate

The 1970s was an amazing decade to live through, Connor. Though just a small child at the start, and a decidedly troubled school-leaver at the end, who never had the confidence to be part of the in-crowd at school and therefore enjoy all the big hits at the time; I certainly remember and feel that I know all of these songs - and many more that never made it to the number one spot! I well remember Eve Graham and the New Seekers, teaching the world to sing and then telling us that Coke was the real thing, Roy Wood wishing it could be Christmas everyday; the newly-appointed Queen Sonja of Sweden hiotting the headlines as the real Dancing Queen, at her wedding ball; and the compromise that allowed girls to wear dark trousers instead of skirts at school, providing they wore their school ties (all of which followed-on from Bay City Roller-mania, that made tartan fashionable again); and doing the3 Slosh at the school disco!! It was a decade of industrial unrest, power cuts, poverty, strikes, shortages, and massive unemployment - and yet, the very best music emerges in those times and it is memorable in ways that no other compares with. It was when this racist and sexist nation began looking at itself differently - though that would be a much longer process that anyone imagined, and if you look at those musicians now, you'll see the beginnings of today's gender politics emerging for the first time too. It should have been the springboard to modern Britain and would have been - had it not been for what followed. But that's another decade, and another story!
