yeah when you listen to the songs that came in the years before the beatles it's like night and day, the beatles must have felt so modern and refreshing at the time, like music had for the first time been unshackled, something I'd assume the public didn't even know was possible until they heard The Beatles for the first time, how cool.

Madonna is unstoppable with 12 entries, hitting number in 1986, 1989 and 2000. I honestly shocked that Like a Virgin and Hung Up didn’t even enter this chart, these two songs are massive hits worldwide
Amazing list, really. And ardent pop chart fan, i followed them almost religiously. Thanks for this.... I'd almost forgotten many of these wonderful tracks of yesteryears...
It was fun to see that around what year I started recognising songs due to my parents still listening to them, and it was around the 70s when they were very young. It was also such a great flashback to all the hits I used to listen to as a kid/teenager from 2005 onwards, I recognised every song from that year on. Hearing some of them brought me back memories, like Hey, Soul Sister by Train and Cheerleader by OMI. Lovely video!
I know I'm late to the party but I just watched this and I have to say the music after 2000 leaves me cold. I'm a 70s girl and I think I'll stay there.
Keep in mind this is where the songs are in a world wide chart not just the US or UK, this explains the variation from the charts from the various counties we might be comparing this against.
I was blown away by the effect Elvis had, then the Beatles and Stones. Then along came ABBA, which had quite the run too! Madonna showed some incredible lasting power, as she remained up there from 84 to mid 2000's . Pretty impressive. Curious how you can see/hear music evolve/devolve (depending on your taste) Curiously, in the late 60's/early 70's no soul from like 4 Tops or Temptations, or the Supremes made the top 5, nor did Creedence Clearwater. Interesting. No early 60's Beach Boys? Good Vibrations was one of THE biggest hits EVER! Just curious stuff.
Survivorship bias: we remember all of the good songs from that era and forget how many bad songs there were then too. We just haven’t filtered out the bad ones yet so we hear those more.
Wow! All these years I thought "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc was a Paul McCartney and Wings song. His voice is eerily like McCartney's. I loved the song "Winds of Change" by the Scorpians, but I never paid any attention to who it was by. One of the most hauntingly beautiful Rock songs ever. George Michael had an amazing voice. What a shame the only one of his songs that made it big was one of his worst. Listen to "Kissing a Fool" or "Father Figure" for a truly romantic, beautiful song. And of course, "Hand to Mouth" was phenomenal. Some really great music here.
Graham Gouldman was the founder/frontman for 10cc. He wrote quite a few hits in the mid-60’s. Between 1965 and 1967 alone, he wrote "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul" and "Evil Hearted You" for the Yardbirds, "Look Through Any Window" (with Charles Silverman) and "Bus Stop" for the Hollies, "Listen People", "No Milk Today" and "East West" for Herman's Hermits

When it comes to music, I enjoy each era. I was five when the Beatles were on the radio. 60s and 70s music is classic, but I heard a lot of 80s 90s 2000 favs and beyond in this compilation. I just love 💕 music!
The Beatles getting 4 of the 5 hits and only being infiltrated by Pretty Woman is so impressive
And on a four track. Amazing
It really shows just how popular the Beatles were. The first year they were seen (on here) they make up 4 of the top 5 songs for the whole year
That's Beatlemania for ya
yeah when you listen to the songs that came in the years before the beatles it's like night and day, the beatles must have felt so modern and refreshing at the time, like music had for the first time been unshackled, something I'd assume the public didn't even know was possible until they heard The Beatles for the first time, how cool.

"Whenever, wherever" still brings something special, right to my soul! :)
I love the fact that the Beatles have four entries in 1964.

As a 18 year old I love The Beatles so much
